JAMMU, July 15: The causal labourers and need based workers of various departments held strong protest demonstration in support of their long pending demands here today.
A large number of tempoprary workers under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir Casual Labourers United Front, led by heads of various departmental unions assembled near Press Club here today and staged strong protest demonstration. They were carrying banners and placards in hands and shouting slogans in support of their demands.
Senior members of the United Front while speaking to the media on the occasion claimed that Lt Governor in a recent interview to a local channel had claimed that his Administration would frame a policy for the regularization of casual labourers/ temporary workers, engaged in various departments. But unfortunately, even after 20 days of his assurance/ statement, nothing has happned so far.
They alleged that a large number of workers are without wages, many of them have turned over age and they have their families to support. Under such circumstances, they will not be able to feed their families. Many of therm are facing starvation, they adedd.
They further pointed out that there were over 60,000 casual labourers and need based workers engaged in different departments and working for the last 15-20 years but unfortunately they were not regularized. They apprised that various political parties in different regimes only befooled these poor workers from time to time. Several committees were also framed by different Governments but no result could be achieved.
They strongly demanded their regularization, release of pending wages and implementation of Minimum Wages Act as per Central norms. Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion included Tanveer Hussain-PHE, Rajan Sharma –Agri, Kuldeep Raj- Estates, Devi Dass –Floriculture and Parks and Gardens, Akhil Sharma- PDD, Amarjeet Singh- Irri&FC, Satish Sharma –PWD and Ajay Kumar-Forest Department.
