NEW DELHI, Feb 2: A delegation of DoPT (Department of Personnel & Training) officials led by Union Secretary Personnel Ajay Mittal , today called on Union Minister Incharge DoPT, Dr Jitendra Singh and conveyed their appreciation and gratitude for the relief given to the salaried employees in the Union Budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday.
Responding to their gesture, Dr Jitendra Singh said, this is for the first time that a Government has acknowledged the important role of the salaried class in contributing the bulk of Income Tax collections, throughout the country. He said, the mention made in this regard by the Union Finance Minister in his Budget speech, goes beyond the realms of financial reform and, in fact, amounts to publicly according respect and reverence to the honesty and sincerity shown by the employees as tax payers.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, a standard deduction of Rs.40,000 per annum on Income Tax in lieu of the existing transport allowance and reimbursement of medical expenses, announced specifically for the salaried class will offer a huge reinforcement not only to the working employees, but also the pensioners in the later phase of their life.
In addition, he said, this class of citizens will also be the beneficiaries of health insurance cover offered for the first time by the Government and exemption of interest on deposits being increased from Rs.10,000 to Rs.50,000 for elder pensioners.
For women employees, Dr Jitendra Singh noted, the contribution to Provident Fund has been reduced to 8% and this also is a relief for the salaried class.
With ever increasing number of pensioners in the Government service, Dr Jitendra Singh said,  the issues like late age illness, lack of caretakers for help and financial constraints have been addressed by the budget. This is not only a financial support but also a huge social reform contemplated for the first time by any Government, he said.
