BJP to launch ‘jail bharo andolan’ against UPA tomorrow

NEW DELHI, May 26:  The BJP will launch a nationwide ‘jail bharo andolan’ tomorrow with senior leaders of the principal Opposition party to court arrest in different parts of the country against the Congress-led UPA government over the issues of corruption, price rise and alleged scams.

BJP chief Rajnath Singh, Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley and other party leaders will court arrest during the agitation which will conclude on June 3.

Mr Singh will court arrest in Delhi alongwith party general secretary Ananth Kumar, spokesperson Prakash Javadekar, BJP unit president Vijay Goel and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told a news conference on Friday.

He said Ms Swaraj will court arrest in Madhya Pradesh while Mr Jaitley will take part in the agitation in Chandigarh.

However, BJP Parliamentary Party chairman L K Advani and other senior leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari will not take part in the first phase of the agitation.

BJP general secretary and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s confidant Amit Shah will lead the party in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur on May 29 along with Mr Naqvi and party’s state unit chief Laxmikant Bajpayee.

“There is rampant corruption and price rise under the  Congress-led UPA government. The government has zero achievement but it is celebrating,” Mr Naqvi had said.

The UPA-II released its report card for four years in power on Wednesday.

Mr Naqvi said BJP activists and other people numbering lakhs will participate in the ‘jail bharo andolan’ and ‘expose’ alleged corruption of the UPA government.

The BJP leader said the movement’s slogan will be “Bhajpa lao, desh bachao” (Bring the BJP, save the country).

The agitation will conclude four days ahead of the BJP’s national office bearers meeting in Goa on June 7. The office bearers will finalise the agenda for the June 8-9 national executive meet in the party-ruled state. It will be the first national meeting of the BJP chief’s new team. (AGENCIES)
