ASMITA Women’s Basketball League begins

JAMMU, Aug 31: The ASMITA UT Basketball League for Sub-Junior Women got underway at Bhagwati Nagar Indoor Complex, with 12 teams from different districts participating in the championship.

The event is being organised by the J&K Basketball Association (JKBA) under the aegis of the Khelo India Division of the Sports Authority of India, in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council.

Eminent educationist and social worker Veena Handa inaugurated the championship. Six matches were played on the opening day, with teams from Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Jammu, Kathua and various schools showcasing their talent and putting up impressive performances in their respective pools.

Addressing the gathering of players, officials, parents and spectators, Handa appreciated the efforts of the Government and JKBA in promoting women's sports, particularly in far-flung districts of the Union Territory. JKBA General Secretary Aman Sharma thanked the J&K Sports Council for its support in organising the event.

In the matches played, APS Ratnuchak defeated Cambridge International by 18-2, Srinagar District beat Jodhamal by 19-16, and PM SHRI KV No 2 defeated Jodhamal by 24-2. Budgam registered a 22-2 victory over Heritage School.

Prominent among those present were Rajeev Sharma, former member of the Standing Committee of JKSC; Dr Vikram Handa, President, JKBA; Ashok Singh Jamwal, Senior Vice-President, JKBA; Sushma Jamwal, Chairperson, Selection Committee, JKBA; besides senior coaches and sports administrators.
