SRINAGAR, Sept 18: Maj. Gen. Neeraj Verma, Additional Director General, NCC, J&K Directorate, called on N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan, here today.
Maj. Gen. Verma briefed the Governor about the functioning of the NCC in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. He also apprised the Governor about the initiatives being taken for bringing more boys and girls under the ambit of NCC in J&K, particularly in the remote areas.
The Governor stressed the need for expanding NCC activities in the State to enroll a much larger number of boys and girls, particularly from the remote and far-flung areas of Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh regions, to provide them the confidence and discipline which would equip them for varied career opportunities in their future lives.
In this context, Maj. Gen. Verma briefed the Governor about the todate status of the proposal to add one more Naval Wing and start an Air Wing to the existing NCC set up in the State. With these additions, the NCC strength in J&K will go to approximately 27,500, from the existing nearly 24,000 Cadets.
Brig. N. K. Khajuria, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarter, Srinagar, was present during the meeting.
A delegation of the J&K Handicapped Association, Srinagar also called on Vohra, and presented to him a memorandum of their problems and demands.
The demands presented by the 11-member delegation led by Abdul Rashid Bhat, President of the Association, included, interalia, provision of land for construction of office of the Association, providing a specially designed vehicle to the Association suitable for meeting the requirements of the physically challenged, enhancement of monthly pension, free education to the children of physically challenged persons and establishment of an Advisory Board for Handicapped in the State. Other demands included bringing physically challenged under the ambit of Antyodaya Anna Yojana and setting up a separate Directorate for Disability Affairs in J&K.
Interacting with the delegation, the Governor observed that he would address the Chief Minister in regard to the establishment of an Advisory Board for Handicapped in the State as well as about the other issues raised by them.
A delegation of the Confed-eration of India Industries (CII), Kashmir Zone, led by Sheikh Imran presented a concept paper to the Governor in regard to putting in place inland water transport system in the Kashmir valley in a phased manner, promoting this facility in Srinagar city to begin with. The delegation briefed the Governor about the salient features of this proposal which had been implemented in 1996 but later given up, for reasons which are not adequately clear.
A deputation of the Society for Human Welfare and Education, Srinagar, working for the education and welfare of the physically challenged children led by M. Ahmad, Incharge of the organization appraised Governor of demands which include provision of a School Bus for the School for Deaf and Dumb and visually impaired children run by the Society and providing adequate financial support to the organization for carrying out its activities.
The deputationists briefed the Governor that this Society is running three educational institutions which include School for Deaf and Dumb Children, School and Home for visually impaired and a school for normal children. The Society is also imparting vocational training to the physically challenged children.
While announcing a support of Rs. 3.50 lakh to the Society for promoting the education and welfare of the physically challenged children, the Governor observed that the issues raised by the deputationists would be taken up with the State Government.
