JAMMU, Nov 16: Agitated over Jammu University Vice-Chancellor’s controversial remark that terrorist Burhan Wani should not have been killed but captured alive, the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad activists in Government Degree College Paloura and SPMR College of Commerce today held a strong protest demonstration and demanded removal of Prof R D Sharma from the top position.
Shouting slogans against the Vice-Chancellor and in support of their demand, the agitating students boycotted their classes and blocked the ever busy Canal Road by holding a joint dharna there.
The protest was led by Milan Singh Rana, Bindu Parihar, Vishal, Sahil and Animesh, who also addressed the protesting students and threatened a vigorous agitation if the incumbent VC is not removed from his position. They said that continuation of such  person as Vice-Chancellor was virtually an insult to the security forces that killed Burhan Wani.
Meanwhile, ABVP State Secretary Varsha Jandial, while addressing a press conference, here today, said that continuation of Prof R D Sharma as the Vice-Chancellor could be dangerous for peace and stability of the sensitive State, like Jammu-Kashmir. “The person having such a mindset can turn an educational institution into a hub of terror activities,” she said while pointing towards sensitivity of the issue, particularly in wake of the fact that the VC, instead of admitting his mistake, claimed that it was his personal view on Burhan Wani.
“We demand immediate dismissal of this VC and the ABVP will organize a campaign for pressing the Government as well as the Chancellor in this regard as students would never accept a person with separatist approach in our institutions,” she stressed.
The ABVP leader said that at the time when entire country was contributing to the nation in different aspects and also boosting up the morale of security forces in fight against terrorism, JU VC had tried to raise a question mark on intentions of forces in eliminating Burhan Wani.
“Burhan Wani could never be the icon of any person as he was purely a destructive element and a wanted terrorist of the time. He had exploited the life of the bulk of youths by letting them follow the path of terrorism which ultimately leads to innocent killings. Icons are purely different. They construct the nation, not destruct,” Varsha said in apparent reference to Prof Sharma’s purported remark that Burhan Wani was an icon for Kashmiri people.
Ganesh Kunde, ABVP State Joint secretary and G M Ali, Joint secretary Jammu Mahanagar, also addressed the press conference.
