Sir,
Last month I had to visit GMC Jammu as one of my close relatives was admitted there. After completing my MBBS from GMC jammu 10 years back, I have worked in various government hospitals in India as PG resident, senior resident and now as an Assistant Professor in anaesthesia. The patient care being provided by GMC Jammu has only deteriorated in these 10 years. My patient was admitted to emergency with history of sudden onset slurring of speech, weakness of one side of body. No senior resident from medicine was present in emergency to make a self explained diagnosis of stroke and initiate any kind of treatment. Even after confirmation by CT scan patient was managed by 1st year medicine residents. As the condition the, deteriorated the patient needed incubation which proved to be too difficult. An emergency tracheostomy was needed but the ENT surgeon posted in emergency was no where to be found as he was resting in hostel instead of being present in emergency. Emergency tracheostomy was done but the patient expired after 8 hours of stay in emergency. During these 8 hours a patient of stroke was not seen by any neurologist.
Sadly the trend of private practice by consultants has not only degraded the standard of patient care but also the quality of doctors being produced by GMC Jammu. Private practice is banned in Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal, Punjab not to talk of AIIMS and PGI. Its high time that private practice of consultants is banned so that they not only improve patient care but also teach something to their students who are the future of health care of this state.
Yours etc….
K. Malik
