Birsa Munda’s Ideals Guiding Light For Inclusive Development: Vice President

NEW DELHI, June 9: Vice President C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday paid tributes to tribal icon Birsa Munda on his death anniversary, saying his ideals are a guiding light for social justice and inclusive development.
On this day in 1900, the iconic tribal freedom fighter attained martyrdom. He spearheaded the historic late 19th-century tribal uprising, “Ulgulan” (The Great Tumult) against the British colonial rule.
In a social media post, the vice president said Munda’s life symbolised courage, self-respect and an unwavering commitment to justice.
“Through the historic Ulgulan, he awakened the spirit of resistance against oppression and inspired tribal communities to safeguard their rights, identity and dignity,” he said.
Radhakrishnan recalled that he had the opportunity to pay respects at his birthplace, Ulihatu, on the very first day of assuming office as governor of Jharkhand and again recently as the vice president.
“Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s sacrifice and ideals continue to guide the nation in its pursuit of social justice, empowerment and inclusive development. His legacy will remain a lasting source of inspiration for generations to come,” he added. (Agencies)
