8th Jagran Film Festival pays homage to Om Puri

NEW DELHI:  The eighth Jagran Film Festival today will pay a tribute to veteran Bollywood actor Om Puri and will conclude with his wife Seema Kapoor’s ‘Mr Kabaadi’, the last film in which the veteran actor performed.

The film is based on a Moliere play. The satire has Annu Kapoor in the lead and Om Puri as the sutradhar (narrator). It is a rags-to-riches story of how class divides people and how some of them are uncomfortable of their own social standing.

The story is about Kallu Kabaadi. A low life scrap dealer whose life turns from rags to riches. Fortune smiles upon Kallu after he marries his sweetheart Chando, the rag picker.

Kallu inherits his grandfather’s piece of land. The land’s prices have skyrocketed as a highway has been built upon it. Now that Kallu is wealthy, he wishes to leave behind his past and start a new chapter.  He wants to erase his past friendships, poor, miserable slum life and live a lavish life, one could only dream of. Having no experience or education required to run a successful, reputable business, Kallu owns over 150 private toilets around the state. Embarrassed by their own profession, family lies about owning chain of restaurants as a facade. The story revolves around Kallu’s family chaos and funny situations.   The makers of the film, shot in and around Lucknow, Jhalawar (Rajasthan) and Mumbai, said its essence lies in being true to oneself.

The songs in the flick are given by Sukhwinder Singh, Shaan, Madhushree, Vikrant Bhartiya and Javed Ali. A Bhajan with comic touch is sung by Anup Jalota. There is also a Qawaali in the movie, showing fight between Om Puri and Annu Kapoor, sung by Javed Ali and Gani Mohammad.

The cast of the film includes Om Puri, Annu Kapoor, Sarika, Vinay Pathak, Meenal Kapoor, Rajveer Singh, Kashish Vora, Ulka Gupta, Apurva Nain and Brajendra Kala. Jagran Film Festival is country’s only Travelling Film Festival, executed in a way to transcend cultural and geographical boundaries of India and unite them for the love of cinema.

The 2017 edition of Jagran Film Festival was launched this weekend by veteran actor Rishi kapoor and Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi . (AGENCIES)
