NEW DELHI, Aug 10: Addressing the 23rd Annual National Conference of Hypertension Society of India here today, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, MoS in the Prime Minister’s Office, Department of Personnel and Training, Earth Sciences (Independent Charge), Atomic Energy and Space, said that the 21st century focus in India will be on prevention and control of metabolic diseases including Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and heart disease.
Dr. Jitendra Singh said that if first three decades after independence were spent in finding cure for communicable diseases like tuberculosis, typhoid, Cholera, etc., the last decade of 20th century and the beginning of 21st Century have shifted the focus to non-communicable diseases like Hypertension and Diabetes because of number of factors including increase in life span, better standard of living and stressful sedentary lifestyle.
Enumerating the various initiatives taken by his Ministry, Dr. Jitendra Singh called upon the medical professionals, especially young medicos to come forward with various scientific projects related to Diabetes and Hypertension in which the CSIR and Science & Technology Department can collaborate. He assured full logistic and other supports from his Ministry. Similarly, he added that the Bio-technology Department under him could offer immense potential for research in new areas of medicines which include stem-cell and gene therapy.
Earlier, Dr. Jitendra Singh was felicitated by the Hypertension Society of India on taking over as Union Minister under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Veteran physician and past President of Association of Physicians of India (API), Dr. Siddarth Shah spoke highly about the qualities of head and heart of Dr. Jitendra Singh. Past President of Association of Physicians of India, Dr. A. Muruganathan said that he was proud to recall that Dr. Jitendra Singh had been his junior in Stanley Medical College, Chennai.
