LEH, Nov 27: 16 Yaks (10 young and 6 adults) of a Yakzi were killed by some wild predator recently at village Gya located in eastern Ladakh.
The incident took place on the night of November 19 in the settlement of Yakzi Phuntsog Tserinng Choksar, at very high pastures called Amadu Phu located at 4800 meters above sea-level.
As per the reports, Phuntsog and his younger brother Stanzin, had snugged the 12 young Yaks with rope at the coral wall, with the rest of adult Yaks free as usual but next day early morning they noticed 10 young out of the 12 young Yaks had been killed and all the adults had scattered and runaway in different directions towards the pastureland due to horror.
When the herders tried to search for the rest of the adult Yaks towards the valley, they found 6 adults also been killed in different locations of the pastures. The herders found that some of the adult Yaks are still alive and struggling to breath with severe injuries.
Phuntsog and his family members approached the wildlife department seeking financial assistance in terms of compensation and investigations to ascertain the predator that killed the Yaks but to their utter disappointment, they were told by the concerned Ranger, Khenrap Phuntsog, that the new UT Government has no provision to pay compensation in case of loss of livestock to predator attacks.
