13 shops selling acid in Srinagar sealed

SRINAGAR, Feb 8: To prevent the easy availability of acid in Srinagar, the District Administration Srinagar today launched a massive drive across the City during which over a dozen shops involved in the illegal sale of the acid were sealed.
The drive was launched on the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mohammad Aijaz Asad in all Tehsils of the City including Eidgah, Shalteng, Panthachowk, South Srinagar,, Chanpora and North Tehsil of the District.
During the drive, officials said, as many as 13 shops were sealed for violating the Supreme Court directions besides selling distilled water/acid without a licence. “Some shopkeepers had not also maintained the inventory register for its sale,” a handout issued here said.
It is to be noted here that in wake of the recent horrifying acid attack in Srinagar, the District Magistrate has constituted a Surveillance Task Force comprising of Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Senior Officers of Police & Civil Administration of District to regulate the sale of acid/corrosive substances.
In this regard, District Magistrate Srinagar has said strict measures are being taken by the Administration to tackle such crime. He termed the Acid Attack as an assault on the collective conscience of society.
