100 skiers take part in 4-day National Nordic Ski C’ship

GULMARG, Mar 6: Winter Games Federation of Indian (WGFI) organized 4-day National Championship in Cross Country Skiing called Nordic Skiing which concluded here today.
The championship was conducted with the active support of IISM Gulmarg, HAWS, WGA J&K and Director Tourism Govt. of J&K.
The accommodation to the athletes was provided by IISM and technical support was provided by HAWS.
Earlier, Abbas Ahmad Wani, MLA Tangmarg declared the Championship open, while JS Dhillon, Principal IISM and President of WGFI supervised the conduct throughout the championship. In all, 11 teams consisting nearly 100 Ski athletes including 18 girls participated in the championship. The teams were from different states and from Central organizations of ITBP, IISM, ABVIMAS Manali and Army. An impressive closing ceremony was held in IISM in which Major General Atul Kaushik, Commandant HAWS was the chief guest.
He gave away the medals to the winners of different Skiing events. Athletes were very happy to participate in the event and praised IISM for providing excellent administration during the conduct.
In total, 5 different events were held which included 15 kms Free Ski run for men, 10 kms Sprint run was organized for both men and women. The last event was an exciting 30nkms Ski run for men which brought lot of excitement to the visitors.
In 15 Kms Free Ski run for men, Rameez Ahmad, Shubam Parihar and Jagdish Singh bagged first, second and third position respectively, while in 10 Kms Free Ski run for women, Babita, Parawati Khampa and Janki claimed the first three positions respectively.
In 30 Kms Sprint run for men, Jagdish Singh, Shubam Parihar and Padma Namgial claimed first, second and third position respectively.
1.6 Kms Sprint run for men, Jagdish Singh won first position, Shubam Parihar clinched second spot and Mohd Aslam bagged third position, while in 1.2 Kms Sprint run for women, Babita, Vikas Rana and Parwati Khampa bagged the first three positions respectively.
According to the organizers, the event will go a long way to revive tourism in the Valley.
