Zulfkar calls on Paswan, seeks Central help in NFSA implementation

NEW DELHI, Dec 12: Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and Tribal Affairs, Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali called on Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, Ram Vilas Paswan and discussed various issues regarding implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA) in J&K.
Zulfkar took up with the Union Food Minister the issue regarding sufficient central funding for effective implementation of NFSA in J&K. Zulfkar said most of the areas in J&K remain snow-bound during winters and the State needs further relaxation in availability of funds to implement NFSA. He said since maximum areas are snow-bound, the State Government has decided to release bulk ration of four months instead of one month and sought GoI’s help in this regard.  The Minister also sought Paswan’s intervention in supply of packed bags of 20 KG rice and wheat to J&K.
Raising the issue of substandard wheat being supplied by Food Corporation of India (FCI), Zulfkar apprised Mr Paswan that FCI supplies poor quality wheat to J&K which needs to be taken care of. He said J&K will never compromise on the quality of grains and will lift only standard quality wheat and rice.
Zulfkar also sought Centre’s financial assistance for strengthening consumer affairs activities of Legal Metrology Department in J&K. He sought funding for upgradation LMD labs, controller office building, secondary standard labs and research and developments labs. He also sought central funding for publicity of legal metrology laws & rules, consumer protection laws and publication of related materials. He also sought assistance for working standard balance sets, working standard weights sets, working standard capacity measure sets, check measures, PCR mobile vans, computers and printers, B.P Kits, thermometer kits and mobile kits.
The Minister also sought central assistance in establishment of State Consumer Helpline, Consumer Welfare Fund, Setting up of retail price monitoring cell and infrastructure for District Consumer Forums.
Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs assured every possible help from Centre to implement NFSA in the State and also assured assistance in strengthening consumer affairs activities in the state.
