Yoga, the mindsetter

Dr Raj Shree Dhar

“O Lord! Lead me from the unreal to the Real, from darkness to Light, and from death to Immortality.”
Both yogic meditation and Mathematics work similarly: “they take away attention from the outside world and compel the soul to turn its gaze inwards where there is the full perfection of being and reunite the soul with the Universal soul within depths of reality, so that yoga and mathematics hence lead to the blessed life.” Yoga is a science that deals with body, breath, mind, soul, and ultimately, the universe itself. It is both practical and theoretical.
Yoga is a path to Omniscience. The greatest need of the hour is “Yoga for all” for attaining good health both physical and mental, to carry out duties successfully in the world. One great advantage of it is that it enhances our work efficiency due to sound health. One can work continuously for hours with devotion and dedication. Practice of Yoga keeps us far away from ailments as it creates in us a tremendous power of resistance and the body does not fall an easy prey to disease. John Locke has said: A sound mind in a sound body is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World. It is the broader practice  of yoga (asana, pranayama, and meditation) that is the most effective.
Meditation means the detachment of sense organs from outward objects after having achieved the stability of our body. Meditation is to be practiced at the regular time, place, posture etc. There are many techniques of meditation like introspection of daily routine, research, mental oneness, thought creation, breathing etc. One of the advantages of Meditation is to gain inner silence.  Silence means to be at peace with oneself both internally and externally. Control of the tongue marks the beginning of silence. Some people make use of abusive tongue as well as abusive behavior. In order to save oneself, one has to gain the control over the tongue by consistent practice by speaking less, avoiding the possibility of heated discussions and quarrels, maintain the stability of mind in the moment of crisis. The practitioner of silence gains immense energy, power of thinking and maintain absolute calmness.
Pranayam is the process by which the Pran or vital force is controlled by the regulation of breath i. e. the control of the act of breathing both inhalation and the exhalation. The two substances that lie at the base of the creation of this universe are Ether and Vital force i.e. Pran, and Pran transcends Mind and senses. Pran continues functioning even when mind sleeps. One of the most important functions of Pranayam is to bring about the stability of the mind and self-realization. It should be practiced constantly and consistently. Ordinarily, a person takes 15 breaths per minute but a pracstitioner of Pranayam can take 5 breaths per minute thus saving breaths and increasing his life span. There are four phases of Pranayam : Inhalation of deep breath, retention of breath, exhalation of breath and retention externally. Pranayam makes our mind stable, peaceful, and strong. Every muscle of thorax region is toned up and blood purified. Pranayam should be performed with ease and comfort, soundness and stability, cheerfulness and devotion of mind. There are various types of Pranayam like Plavini, Agnisar, Kapal Bhatti, Sury bhedi,Bhastrika, Bhramari, Ujjayi, Chander bedi, Anulom-Vilom, Sheetkari etc.
Yog-Asana  is the mutual harmonization of the physical and the astral body. Astral body is constituted of mind, intellect, consciousness and ego. The role of asana  is to establish a perfect co- ordination between the body and the mind and to activate our glands. While performing asanas, the bones become elastic, muscle strong, blood circulation normal, digestive and excretory systems strong, inhaling and exhaling process deep, nervous system powerful, strong heart, kidney and liver etc. Asana is one of the eight limbs of classical Yoga, which states that poses should be steady and comfortable, firm yet relaxed helping a practitioner to become more aware of their body, mind, and environment. The asanas make the body active and lustrous and it prevent  Diabetes, Obesity, Asthama.  There are many asanas like Padmasan, Ardhchandrasan, Trikonasan, Paschimottanasan, yogmudra, Gomukhasan etc. which can prevent many diseases like Blood pressure, Arthirites, Diabetes, Gout, Heart problem, stone, etc.
Laughter exercises a miraculous effect on all the systems of our body. Practice of daily laughter reveals that laughter is slowly and gradually being converted into inner happiness and thereby makes our life active and free of tension. Do not laugh at others but laugh with others to manifest ones’own happiness and share that happiness.
Through Yoga, we can establish a harmony between the body and the mind. The role of Yoga is all the more important in this tense world of today and is instrumental in our health, discipline, will power, peace of mind. Yoga doesn’t only reduce anxiety, but it also fights other problems caused by the constant stress.  One’s body becomes free of disease, thoughts become noble, capacity for work gets a fillip, life becomes balanced; abstain from bad habits, comfortable old age, mental alertness, power of concentration. Yog Asans have the capacity to cure many types of ailments but on the whole they have more preventive than curative value. And practicing yoga and meditation is safe, cheap, and has no side effects.
Yoga Science  is not a religion; it is a way of life. It integrates mind, body and soul. Yoga creates harmony between mankind and nature. Yoga is a specific remedy against the evil tendency of the mind and the sense organs.
