Wrong to call UP ULB polls results a sweep for BJP: Chidambaram

NEW DELHI, Dec 2:

While congratulating the BJP for its win in the elections to the Uttar Pradesh local bodies, Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday questioned whether it could be called a sweep for the ruling party in the state.

”BJP is indeed the winner in UP and congratulations are in order, but is winning about 28 per cent of all contested posts a ‘sweep’?,” former Finance Minister Chidambaram said in a tweet.

He also wondered whether an increase in the GDP growth from 5.7 per cent to 6.3 per cent could be called a surge.   ”Is a bump from 5.7 per cent to 6.3 per cent a ‘surge’, when the government promised double digit growth?,”he said.

Referring to media reports in this regard,  he said ,”After media reports on Q2 GDP and UP local bodies, Oxford and Webster should re-define the words ‘surge’ and ‘sweep’.”

There are around 50,000 registered cooperative societies in the state and the Samajwadi Party controls most of them.

Mr Pathak stated that the meeting would also discuss names of the probables for Sikandra Assembly bypoll, which was necessitated by the death of BJP MLA Mathura Prasad Pal.

A family member of the deceased MLA could be selected as the party candidate for the bypoll as December 4 is the last date for filing of nomination papers. The election is slated for December 21.

Expressing enthusiasm over BJP’s win in civic polls, the BJP leader claimed that the people had given their mandate to the good governance of the nine-month-old Yogi Adityanath Government. (UNI)
