World Heritage Day celebrated with enthusiasm, zeal

JAMMU, Apr 18: World Heritage Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and zeal.
World Heritage Day was celebrated by Archaeological Survey of India, Srinagar Circle at Ancient Palaces Complex, Ramnagar in District Udhampur this year. The students from various schools and colleges performed cultural awareness programme. A photo exhibition was organized to illustrate the cultural wealth of Jammu and Kashmir region as well as the World Heritage monuments of India.
The chief guest on this occasion was Farrukh Qazi SDM, Ramnagar, who inaugurated the photo exhibition. Tehsildar, Ramnagar and BMO Ramnagar were also presented on the occasion. Dr Virendra Kumar, Assistant Archaeologist briefed the exhibits. The prizes were also distributed to the students who took part in the cultural programmes and drawing competition.
Himalayan Heritage Museum (HHM) celebrated World Heritage Day in the premises of Museum at Talab Tillo, Jammu. The activities performed during the celebration include display of antique objects, manuscript and other objects related to heritage. The function was presided over by RK Vaid, Deputy Secretary Department of Culture and released the Heritage brochure of HHM.
Tsering Tashi, Deputy Director Archives, Archaeology and Museum, Jammu Dr Arvinder Singh Amn Additional Secretary J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Jammu, SM Sawhney from INTACH, Inder Singh, Chairman HHM, Gopal Singh, President HHM, Krishan Singh, Secretary HHM and a large number of students visited the museum.
On the occasion of World Heritage Day, a special exhibition on the traditional and exquisite Kashmiri shawls was held at SPS Museum Lal Mandi. The exhibition was organized by Department of Archives Archaeology and Museums. Several rare shawls from the reserved shawl collections of the museum, consisting of Kani and embroidery were displayed. The extremely rare shawl in embroidery which depicted the map of Srinagar city, made by the famous shawl artist Ghulam Ahmad Kaloo of Amda Kaddal Srinagar during Maharaja period was also displayed in the exhibition, besides the classical Shah Passand Shawls of the Afgan, Sikh and Dogra period.
Thousands of visitors, which included the students of the reputed colleges and school of the Srinagar city visited the exhibition and took keen interest in the exhibition.
Carmel Convent Higher Secondary School celebrated “World Heritage Day”. A special prayer service was organized by the students of class 6th highlighting the need to conserve and protect heritage sites. Some important historical sites of India were exhibited in the shape of models. The students dressed up in traditional outfits depicted the culture of different States in the form of dance and drama. Jasleen Randhawa of class 6th enlightened the gathering with a motivational speech on the preservation and importance of Indian heritage and culture. School Principal Swati was also present on the occasion.
Delhi Public School, Jammu organized Inter-House Panel Discussion on the topic “Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism” on the occasion of International Heritage Day. The five houses represented five important segments of the society viz Government of India, UNESCO, Members of ASI, Citizens of India and Royal Families of India. Three students from each of the 5 houses participated with great enthusiasm and zeal and voiced their concern and opinions on how different departments can play positive role in preserving the cultural heritage and promoting tourism. The departments also brought forward the problems and challenges faced by them and suggested obtainable solutions.
The panel discussion comprised of 5 rounds including introduction, discussion on current challenging issues, solutions to immediate problems, sustainability of tourism and take away from discussion.
The event was judged by Ravi Kotroo, Deputy Head Master and Preeti Abrol, Coordinator.
Chenab House stood first, whereas Jhelum and Yamuna Houses stood second and third respectively. This whole event was moderated by Neha Mahajan, Aditi Sharma and Jaswinder Singh.
Principal Ruchi Chabra encouraged the participants to participate actively in preserving culture and heritage.
