JAMMU, Aug 30: The State Government has provided a special grant of Rs 20 lakh for renovation and upgradation of the Higher Secondary School for Deaf and Dumb.
Work on the project commenced here today at a simple ceremony. It was formally launched by two differently abled tiny tots of the school. The R&B Department has been entrusted this work.
Under the project, a recreational room will be added to the school to provide recreational facilities to the students. The school is being given proper and safe electrical system with underground fittings. The class rooms will be properly titled. The school will get much needed facelift.
The school is being run by a noted NGO, J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, to provide education up to Higher Secondary level totally free of cost. The school is first of its kind in the State.
The Central Government Pensioners’ Welfare Association has adopted the School under SANKALP programme, launched by the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare,   Govt of India.
On the occasion, the president of Samaj Kalyan Kendra (SKK), K B Jandial thanked the State Government, especially Chief  Minister Mehbooba Mufti, former Chief Secretary B R Sharma and present Chief Secretary B B Vyas for their wholehearted support and patronage by sanctioning special grant to this institution and hoped that this patronage would be forthcoming in future as well to render best possible facilities to these hearing and speech impaired children. The school will soon have its own website, which is currently under construction.  Last year, the school was got registered with Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment under Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme. The State Social Welfare Department is also providing help in shape of grant and scholarships to the students.
Among those present on the occasion,  included patron Inderjeet Khajuria, vice president M L Sharma, general secretary J K Vaid, treasurer M N Sharma, former Principal Chief Conservator of Forest P P Sharma, and B B Magotra, O P Verma,  senior members of the NGO, AEE R&B Yasir Kitchloo and Principal Roshan Bhan.
