Ward No. 11

JAMMU: Despite much hype over strict implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) of the Union Government, sanitation has remained a distant dream for the residents of Ward No. 11 like other areas which fall under the jurisdiction of Jammu Municipal Corporation.
People of this ward comprising of Malhotra Mohalla, Dal Ali Galli, Devi Dwara, Gujjaran Di Gali, major part of Purani Mandi and Super Bazaar are of the opinion that while launching schemes for ensuring sanitation, steps should be taken to make the concerned officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation accountable for timely action on ground.

No doubt people too have to play a key role in ensuring cleanliness but unless timely and proper collection of garbage is ensured no scheme or programme will yield desirable results, the inhabitants of Ward No. 11 said while interacting with Excelsior Correspondent. Apart from sanitation related problems, the people are also facing immense difficulties due to lack of focus of the concerned authorities on non-functional street lights and encroachments by the shopkeepers in the already congested lanes.
Rakesh Gupta, a resident of Devi Dwara Gali said due to poor sanitation system, drains of the ward remain choked and emit foul smell. He said like other parts of the Jammu, ERA should work on sewerage system of not only this ward but also other wards of the old city.
Asha Rani, a resident of Purani Mandi, complained that there are no garbage bins in the ward and people are bound to throw their household garbage on roadsides and street corners, which have turned into dumping points due to untimely lifting of the same by the JMC.
“Our MLA has done an excellent job of renovating the streets with new tiles but encroachments by the shopkeepers and resident themselves have narrowed the main Malhotra Gali and adjacent lanes so much that even a two-wheeler cannot pass through easily”, Rajni Devi of Malhotra Mohalla said.
Mohd Iqbal of Gujjaran Da Mohalla said that due to non-functional street lights, women feel unsafe while going out alone during night hours and their repeated pleas of replacing and repairing the street lights fell on deaf ears of the JMC officials.
Anita Sharma, Corporator of the Ward, while taking to Excelsior, said that she is very well aware of the problems of her Ward and she will work with full dedication and honesty to redress all the problems in a time bound manner with the help and support of MLA, who has already done a lot for the development of the Ward.
In response to a question, Anita said that installation of CCTV cameras in main bazaars and main lanes of the Ward and opening of a Yoga centre/ladies gym and a tailoring centre for the ladies will be her top priorities.
