JAMMU, Sept 8: An e-mail sent to media houses in New Delhi by the Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HuJI) claiming responsibility for yesterday’s blast outside Delhi High Court in which 13 persons were killed and 76 others were injured has been traced to a cyber café in Kishtwar town. Police have sealed ‘Global Internet Café’, located at Malik Market, Shaheedhi Road few yards away from the Deputy Commissioner’s office and police station in the heart of Kishtwar town without maintenance of any record and registration. Police, which was joined by a two member NIA team tonight besides cyber and Forensic experts, has seized all computers, CPUs, discs and other relevant material from the café and detained five persons including two students of Government Degree College, Kishtwar, two owners of the café, both of whom were brothers, and one of their employee for questioning.....more

India, Pak mull cross-border investment, bank ties

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: As an ambitious move to step up economic engagement, India and Pakistan are examining proposals to allow entrepreneurs to make cross-border investments and their banks to open branches in each others’ territory. The proposals were discussed at a bilateral meeting of officials last month here, minutes of which have been released by the Commerce Ministry today. The Pakistani side asked India to allow investment from their industry. "The Indian side informed inter-ministerial consultation is being done," the minutes said.....more

Amar seeks bail on health ground

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: A Delhi court sought from Tihar Jail authorities a report by tomorrow on Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh’s health as his counsel pleaded for interim bail to him on the grounds of his "deteriorating" health saying unless released urgently, he might not be "here for trial". "I am only asking for the interim bail. I am sure your lordship (the judge) wants him (Amar Singh) here for trial. Till September 19 (the date for hearing on his regular bail plea), he may not be here," Singh’s counsel Hariharan told Special Judge Sangita Dhingra Sehgal. "This is not a normal problem which can be taken care by jail authorities," he told the court, prompting it to seek a report on the health condition of the former general secretary of Samajwadi Party.......more

AI move to acquire 111 planes was disastrous: CAG

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: The decision to acquire 111 planes by Air India through debt was "a recipe for disaster" and should have raised alarm in the Government, the Comptroller and Auditor General has said. Terming the move for getting of a "large number" of planes as "risky", the CAG said the aircraft acquisition had "contributed predominantly" to the airline’s massive debt liability of Rs 38,423 crore as on March 31 last year. In its latest report tabled in Parliament today, the public audit body also called the merger of two erstwhile State-run carriers—Air India and Indian Airlines—"ill-timed" and said that "the financial case for the merger was not adequately validated prior to the merger".....more

Advani to launch yatra against corruption

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: BJP leader L K Advani today made a surprise announcement of undertaking a yatra across the country against the menace of corruption, a move seen as an attempt by him to get a grip over the party. "I have decided to take out a yatra against corruption. The name of the yatra, its timing, point of origin and other details will be worked out with the party. Its focus will be on good governance and clean politics," the 83-year-old leader told reporters. The decision of the quintessential rathyatri is likely to queer the pitch for some of the Gen-Next leaders who have been eyeing the highest position in the BJP hierarchy......more

SRINAGAR/Jammu, Sept 8: Police today foiled the State Government employees 'Secretariat Chalo' march by arresting its top leadership who tried to proceed towards the Civil Secretariat from different venues as part of their three day strike programme to press for their demands. Police also charged batons and used water cannons to foil the march.  Police arrested JCC leadership including Khurshid Alam, Ram Kumar Sharma, Abdul Qayoom Wani, Rafiq Khanyari and Purshottam Ram along with around 300 employees while they were marching towards the Civil Secretariat.  .....more

JAMMU, Sept 8: Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Amritsar region, K S Pathania, today said that tax evasion continues to be substantial particularly in real estate and healthcare business in Jammu and Kashmir and the Income Tax Department will continue surveys till the same is checked up to large extent. Interacting with media persons here this evening, Mr Pathania said, "whenever we carried out surveys in any part of the State, the outcome in the shape of surrender of undisclosed income was substantial, which clearly indicates the level of tax still being evaded".....more

2 PDD CEs swap places Cabinet nod to 300 posts in H&ME

JAMMU, Sept 8: State Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah at Srinagar this evening, gave nod to the creation of over 300 posts in Health and Medical Education Department for drawal of salary of contractual doctors. Authoritative sources told EXCELSIOR that with the creation of over 300 posts, the problem of adjusting newly PSC appointed doctors on the vacant posts in different disciplines and at the same time ensuring regular salary to the contractual doctors will get resolved.....more

Sonia returns after surgery

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: Congress President Sonia Gandhi returned here this morning from London after undergoing surgery for an undisclosed ailment a little more than a month ago. "Congress President returned early today and she is fine," party general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi said without disclosing details of the nature of ailment, surgery or the place where it was done. 64-year-old Gandhi arrived here at 6.20 AM from London in a British Airways Flight BA-0257 and Congress sources said she is unlikely to meet anyone for sometime. She left the country on August 2 and had thereafter undergone a surgery...more

Constitute SIT in murder: HC

JAMMU, Sept 8: State High Court today directed the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajouri, to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigation of murder case that took place on September 12, 2009. The directions for SIT were issued after the petitioner, son of deceased Karnail Singh, submitted that he was not satisfied with the investigation carried out by the Budhal Police. The petitioner further submitted that he extended all cooperation to the investigating agency and even pointed finger of suspicion at Mohd Saleem Khan and Sher Khan, sons of Mohd Sharief Khan of Behlla....more

2 killed, 4 injured in accident

RAMBAN, Sept 8: Two persons were killed and four others sustained injuries when a Tata Sumo, they were traveling in, skidded off the road and rolled down into a nullah along a link road in the district this evening. The ill-fated vehicle bearing registration number JK14A-4932 was on its way towards Ramban when it met with accident on Halla link road due to the negligence of driver, who fled from the spot in an injured condition soon after the mishap. Two persons died on the spot and four others sustained injuries in the accident, which was noticed by some locals, who informed the police about the same...more

No clean chit to Maran: CBI

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran has not so far been given a clean chit in 2G scam case, CBI today told the Supreme Court and objected to the allegation that its investigation in this case is "less than honest". "We have said that the inquiry conducted so far has not revealed element of coercion on the part of Maran (in connection with the sale of Aircel to Malaysia-based Maxis group). "The inquiry prima facie revealed that the Malaysian firm was in contact with the Minister and his brother prior to the takeover of the company from C Sivasankaran," senior advocate K K Venugopal told a bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly.....more
