academic year

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, May 2: The Organisation for Human Resource Development (OHRD) has announced launching of four courses related to Management Practices and IT education in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a press conference, chairman, Rakesh Bhardwaj, stated that courses in Tourism and Travel Management, Journalism and Mass Communication, Computer Teacher Training and Industrial Computer Accounting Course would be launched.

Referring to the courses, Mr Bhardwaj stated the OHRD-India, an ISO 9001-2000 certified organisation and registered with Jammu and Kashmir Government, will be operational in northern India.

He said the courses will be of one year duration and started from this academic year in Jammu.

Answering a question, Mr Vikas Gupta, director of the organisation, said trained and qualified staff will be engaged to impart necessary professional training to the students.

He further added that fee structure has been tailored to be easily accessible and affordable for the students.

The OHRD-India has been established with a vision to make at least one person from every home a computer literate.

Mr Gupta said in this emerging era of globalisation and internationalisation, professional education is now an acceptable mode of overall skill enhancement.

Robert Pattinson’s baby photos unveiled

LOS ANGELES, May 2: Fans of Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson can now fawn over the hunk’s baby photos, which have been published by ‘Life and Style’ magazine.

The three photographs of the ‘Twilight’ star snapped when he was still a little boy were obtained by the magazine and will appear in its latest issue.

The photographs reveal that the dark haired actor is a natural blonde, and show him on a bicycle and eating a sandwich, reported E!Online.

No details have been provided by magazine about when and where the photos were snapped.

The British actor who is currently shooting for the sequel to the hit vampire drama ‘Twilight’, had said in a earlier interview that he had planned to quit acting for a career in music before the opportunity to star in the film came by him. (PTI)

Copra, dry dates down on subdued demand

NEW DELHI, May 2: Copra and dry dates prices today declined by Rs 100 per quintal each in the national capital due to sluggish demand from retailers and stockists.

Marketmen said increased arrivals from producing southern region and soaring mercury also put pressure on the prices.

Copra prices fell by Rs 100 to settle at Rs 4,800-5,000 per quintal on fresh arrivals.

Dry dates also traded lower at Rs 1,700-6,400 against previous closing of Rs 1,800-6,500 per quintal.

Marketmen said subdued demand as consumption fell after mercury soared to cross 44 degree Celsius and increased arrivals in the market also attributed to the fall in copra and dry dates prices in the wholesale dry fruit market here.

Exports plunge in March; imports drop mainly on low oil prices...

NEW DELHI, May 2: India’s exports plunged 33.3 per cent in March, the most in over a decade, as reduction in demand for merchandise since October 2008 in major markets of the world wiped out earlier gains.

With external shipments contracting for six months in a row, the country’s exports aggregated USD 168.70 billion in fiscal 2008-09, managing a paltry growth rate of 3.4 per cent. Exports dropped to USD 11.51 billion in March from USD 17.25 billion a year ago.

As global crude oil prices fell sharply in the second half of the last financial year, oil inflows saw a sharp decline of over 58 per cent, while non-oil imports dropped by 18.9 per cent in March. The trade deficit also declined to USD 4.04 billion from USD 6.32 billion.

However, growth in imports worked out to 14.3 per cent at USD 287.75 billion in 2008-09. The last fiscal closed with a trade gap of USD 119.05 billion.

Exporters and economists feel it would take a few more months before the contraction bottoms out. Exporters sound more positive than economists for the current fiscal.

"Inventories in Europe will be over by August," Federation of Indian Export Organisations President A Sakthivel said. However, ICRIER Director Rajiv Kumar said, "We will be lucky if we can retain the (2008-09 level) of exports." (PTI)

This is the fourth consecutive month of sales crossing 70,000-units mark, it added.

The company’s oldest model M800 sales declined by 47 per cent at 2,345 units as against 4,458 units last year, while the A2 segment comprising Alto, Wagon R, Zen Estillo, Swift and A-Star witnessed a growth rate of nine per cent at 46,817 units as against 43,121 units in the same month last year.
