JAMMU, Mar 1: The NC-Congress coalition is pretty safe on six seats for election to Upper House and could wrest two more if the Opposition remained divided in the election for nine posts of MLCs scheduled for March 7. As the coalition has fielded bigwigs on all eight seats, it was confident of winning all of them. One out of nine seats is certain to go to PDP going by the party’s strength in the Assembly. PCC (I) president and Union Minister for Water Resources Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz is arriving here tomorrow to devise the party strategy for JMC Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections and Upper House poll. Interacting with the visiting delegation of the European Union Commission led by Daniele Smadja, here this evening, Mehbooba said given its strategic location, the State has a pivotal role in forging a new economic alliance in the region for which resolution of the problem is a fundamental requirement. SPO shot dead by militants

JAMMU, Mar 1: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was shot dead by militants at Kastigarh in Doda district last night. He has been identified as Fallail Singh, a resident of Kastigarh. Official sources said the SPO had been attached with 10 Rashtriya Rifles and was on a ‘secret mission’ to locate a hide-out of the militants in upper reaches of Kastigarh when he was kidnapped by the militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit last evening.....more

SRINAGAR, Mar 1: An overground worker (OGW) of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit was arrested from Pulwama district in South Kashmir while an unidentified person was found dead in Soura area of the city, a police spokesman said here today. "Pulwama Police has apprehended one OGW of Hizbul Mujahideen from Pulwama district town, the spokesman said adding the arrested person has been identified as Farooq Ahmad Dar son of Abdul Khaliq, resident of Pakherpora.....more

JAMMU, Mar 1: One hundred and fifty bags cement of Police Housing Corporation (PHC) was seized by police tonight at Babliana under the jurisdiction of Satwari police station where it was being sold in black-market at the rate of Rs 200 per bag. A head constable driver of police, who was driving the truck, has been arrested while a hunt was on to nab construction division officials involved in black-marketing of the cement. The cement was meant for construction of district headquarters in Samba.....more
