JAMMU, Sept 21: Stepping-up infiltration bids on Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district as Assembly elections drew nearer, Pakistan army today made an attempt to push a group of 8 to 10 infiltrators, most of them believed to be foreign mercenaries, from Kalsan post in Poonch sector. The intrusion bid was backed by heavy firing from Pakistan army in yet another violation of cease-fire agreement. The firing was replied by the Indian side and a heavy exchange of gun-battle lasted nearly five hours. .....more

NEW DELHI, Sept 21: The Indian Mujahideen was planning to strike terror in the national capital in a big way by exploding at least 20 bombs in several parts of the city, including prominent commercial complex of Nehru Place, police said today. The disclosure came after the arrest of three more suspected militants, allegedly involved in the serial blasts in the city and other parts of the country, from Jamia Nagar early this morning.......more

India, Pak to discuss cross-LoC CBMs today

NEW DELHI, Sept 21: India and Pakistan will discuss tomorrow the modalities for launching cross-LoC trade and other confidence-building measures related to Jammu and Kashmir. Plot to trigger blasts in Srinagar foiled

SRINAGAR, Sept 21: Police today claimed to have thwarted a militant plan to cause blasts in the city after they arrested four Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants and recovered two bombs. A police spokesman said that acting on a tip-off a police party arrested three militants of HM, including a commander for Srinagar city, who were planning to cause blasts. ...more

Bandh observed to protest cancellation of function

JAMMU, Sept 21: A bandh was today observed in several parts of Jammu region in response to a 48 hour strike call given by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) to protest the dis-respect shown to Amarnath land agitation martyrs by the administration by not allowing the Samiti to hold a function at Abhinav Theatre yesterday despite prior booking to honour the martyrs and give compensation to their families. BJP Corporator Rajesh Gupta was taken into preventive custody by City police when he was asking a couple of shopkeepers, who had opened their shops in the morning, to down their shutters. Another BJP Corporator Dinesh Gupta was arrested from New Plot. Three other BJP leaders were held in City and four in Gangyal. Barring them, no other arrest was made by police. There was no report of any police-public clash in any part of the City. All arrested persons were released in the evening......more

Suspected ultras hijack auto, escape

JAMMU, Sept 21: Three mysterious persons, whom police believed to be militants, hijacked a three wheeler tonight from Sunjwan, threw out the driver at Greater Kailash at some distance and travelled in the auto upto National Highway near Kalu Chak before abandoning the vehicle. The trio were wearing black salwar-kameez and were carrying pithoos besides weapons with them, according to statement of auto driver Rakesh Kumar of Bagh-e-Bahu recorded by the police late tonight. SSP Jammu Manohar Singh said all nakas of police and para-military have been alerted along Jammu-Pathankot national highway and security forces sounded about movement of the militants.....more

SRTC employees suspend strike

SRINAGAR, Sept 21: The J&K State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) workers and other employees today suspended their 32-day long strike after the Government released their pending salaries and sanctioned the slabs of Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). Chairman of the J&K SRTC Workers Union, Shakeel Ahmed Kuchey told the Excelsior that after the Government accepted their demands regarding release of pending salary of five months, 42 slabs of COLA, regular release of wages, conduct of DPC and enhancement in the wages of contractual workers, a decision was taken by the Union to suspend the agitation. Mr Kuchey said that all the employees and workers of the SRTC will resume their duty from tomorrow morning.These employees were agitating since August 20 and the entire fleet of the Corporation had come to a grinding halt since then, causing massive loss to the Corporation. ....more

Advani flays UPA on anti-terror law

AHMEDABAD, Sept 21: The BJP today accused the UPA Government of dragging its feet on the issue of tough law on terrorism despite the Administrative Reforms Commission’s recommendation for it. "The Administrative Reforms Commission (ARC) has recommended for a tough law on terror. It’s one week since the bomb blast in Delhi but UPA Government has still not decided on introducing a stringent Anti-Terror Law. It seems that they are not serious about it," Advani told mediapersons here. "They are simply playing vote-bank politics ahead of the general elections," he charged. ...more

3 Punjab gangsters arrested

JAMMU, Sept 21: Three ‘thugs’ from Faridkot district of Punjab were today arrested by police in Samba when they were cheating the people on the name of supplying them cheap cement. Acting on complaints that a gang was active in Samba, which was collecting money from the people assuring them to provide cheap cement from Government supply, a police party led by SDPO Ram Singh Charak under the supervision of SSP Samba Raghubir Singh conducted a raid and apprehended the gangsters red handed while striking deal with the owner of an under-construction house.. ...more
