Natural rubber production up 6 pc in April

NEW DELHI, May 6: The production of natural rubber rose by six per cent at 57,000 tons in April as against 53,665 tons in the year-ago period, according to the Rubber Board's provisional data.

Meanwhile, natural rubber consumption grew by 13 per cent at 74,000 tons in first month of the current fiscal, compared to 65,350 tons in April 2007.

"Increase in tapped area led to growth in production. Tapping resumed at the start of the month due to intermittent rain," a senior Rubber Board official said, adding that growth in consumption was witnessed from tyre and non-tyre sectors.

The Rubber Board has also announced the projection for the current fiscal. The natural rubber output estimated at 8.75 lakh tons is likely to fall short of the consumption, which is seen at 8.99 lakh tons in 2008-09.

In 2007-08 fiscal, the production of natural rubber declined by three per cent at 8.25 lakh tons from 8.52 lakh tons in the previous fiscal. The production fell because of excessive rainfall and loss in tapping days due to viral disease during the first half of last fiscal.

The consumption, however, increased by five per cent at nearly 8.6 lakh tons during 2007-08 as against 8.2 lakh tons in the year-ago period.

Meanwhile, export of natural rubber rose to 3,049 tons in April, against 2,164 tons in the year-ago period, while import declined to 3,384 tons from 9,013 tons in the same period.

"Since domestic and global price are almost equal, there was least scope for export as well as import in April," the official said.

The Rubber Board has pegged the exports and imports at 50,000 tons and 80,000 tons respectively for 2008-09 fiscal.

India exported 51,381 tons in 2007-08 as compared to 56,545 tons in the previous fiscal. The imports stood at 87,219 tons against 89,699 tons in the same period. (PTI)

NCDEX may shift focus towards metal, energy

NEW DELHI, May 6: As the uncertainty over ban on futures trading of agri-products continues, leading commodity exchange NCDEX may change focus towards metals and energy contracts to boost its depleting turnover.

"The Board will take a view of all factors including the Sen Committee report to decide its future course of action," an NCDEX Board member told PTI.

The Board had earlier asked NCDEX to explore more options apart from the agri commodities, he added.

There is speculation in the market that the government may ban futures trading of some more commodities, so NCDEX will decide how to increase its turnover that has dropped significantly during the last year, he said.

Although the Abhijit Sen Committee, set up to study the impact of futures trading on prices of essential commodities, is silent on the issue regarding ban on agri-futures, Finance Minister P Chidambaram earlier this week said the government may prohibit some more commodities.

NCDEX's turnover slumped by 48 per cent to Rs 25,045 crore during April 1-15 period in the current fiscal from Rs 48,358 crore in the year-ago period. Volumes also took a major dip by 29 per cent to 89.06 lakh tons from 1.25 crore tons, according to market regulator Forward Markets Commission.

Turnover at NCDEX slipped as the exchange was hit by controversies like poor deliveries. Also, the political uncertainty over the ban on futures trading in food items has affected the performance of the exchange, FMC Chairman B C Khatua had said last month.

Incidentally, Ahmedabad-based commodity bourse NMCE, which also mainly deals in agri commodities, has been able to improve its performance as its business rises to over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in April 1-15 from Rs 1,928.33 crore in the corresponding period last year. (PTI)
