Chennai would be keen to get back to their winning ways

CHENNAI, May 5: After two successive losses, Chennai Super Kings would be desperate to get back to their winning ways against a lowly-placed Deccan Chargers hyderabad at the M A Chidambaram stadium here tomorrow.

The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Chennai team suffered embarrassing losses to Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals after the departure of Australians Matthew Hayden and Michael Hussey and hard hitting Jacob Oram of New Zealand.

But Dhoni’s men would like to cash in on the opportunity against the Deccan Chargers, who have so far struggled to choose a winning combination and are placed at the bottom of the points table with just one win to their credit at the half-way stage of the league phase.

Dhoni said his team should not be rated by one innings when they lost to Delhi Daredevils here last week, but their mauling at the hands of Shane Warne-led Rajasthan Royals yesterday exposed the chinks in their armour.

Former Kiwi captain Stephen Fleming was not able to provide a good start to the team as an opener in their last two matches while South Africans Albie Morkel, an all rounder and Makhaya Ntini, who joined the team in its fifth match, seems to be still settling down.

But a win would help Super Kings keep alive their hopes of entering the semi-final stage.

For VVS Laxman’s Deccan Chargers, Rohit Sharma has been the main stay while Australian Adam Gilchrist appears to have hit a bad patch after an unbeaten century plus score. Herschelle Gibbs in his two matches has scored just 12 runs.

Laxman said he was hoping to win since his team would not be under pressure and a victory would be a bonus to them.

"We do hope that our batsmen would enjoy playing on Chennai pitch and are able to post a sizeable total. We are counting on a decent performance here tomorrow to be able to win the match," he said.

However, Laxman’s captaincy has not been impressive with criticism pointing out that his team lacked in the art of strategising. (PTI)

Vaas blessed with a baby, takes a break from IPL

COLOMBO, May 5: Sri Lankan spearhead Chaminda Vaas has taken a short break from the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be with his wife who has given birth to their third child here.

"We are blessed with a boy, our third child," Vaas told reporters here yesterday.

Vaas will return to India to join his team Deccan Chargers for their forthcoming matches soon.

In a recent column for a Sri Lankan newspaper, the 33-year-old said he is excited to be a part of the "latest experiment in cricket, the Indian Premier League".

"The organisers have obviously spent an enormous amount of money to get it off the ground and they are not sparing any expenses in ensuring that it runs smoothly," he told the ‘Sunday Times’.

He said the bowler’s role in Twenty20 is very demanding. (PTI)

ICC convenes meeting to protect tests
from Twenty20 storm

DUBAI, May 5: With the Twenty20 format taking the cricket by storm, a concerned ICC has convened a two-day meeting starting today to discuss ways to protect and promote test cricket and also deliberate upon the volume of the game worldwide.

The meeting of ICC’s cricket committee will also tackle issues concerning the greater use of technology on umpiring decisions and bad light.

The trialling of an umpires’ decision review system, the formulation of playing conditions for the ICC Champions Trophy this year and ICC World Twenty20 2009 and the results of ICC-commissioned research into such issues as bad light will also be on the radar for this meeting.

The committee is chaired by former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and includes ICC general manager David Richardson, former Australia captain Mark Taylor, ex-Pakistan captain Majid Khan and former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding.

It also features umpire of the year Simon Taufel, chief ICC match referee and former Sri Lanka captain Ranjan Madugalle, Kenya captain Steve Tikolo, South Africa coach Mickey Arthur and FICA CEO Tim May.

Under the trial of an umpire decision review system, players will be permitted to request the on-field umpire to review his own decision in consultation with the television umpire.

The idea of allowing the batting team to choose when to take one of the three powerplays during the Champions Trophy and World Twenty20 2009 will also be looked into.

The committee will formulate recommendations to the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) and the ICC board for approval. The next meetings of those committees are set for Dubai from June 29 to July 4. (PTI)

Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils fined for slow over-rate

MUMBAI, May 5: Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils have been fined by the Indian Premier League for maintaining slow over-rates during their clash at the D Y Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai last night.

The home team’s elation of stunning their league-topping rivals by 29 runs in a low-scoring match was dampened a bit when they copped a fine of USD 1000 levied by match referee Javagal Srinath for bowling two overs short in the stipulated period.

The Delhi outfit, led by Virender Sehwag, was also fined USD 500 for bowling one over short, an IPL media release said.

The IPL is being played as per the International Cricket Council playing conditions and rules and any team bowling a slow over rate would be fined US dollar 500 per over, which would be decided by the match referee, the release added. (PTI)
