Road accidents

Sir,

In the last few days there have been some road accidents which have yet again raised a very pertinent question of controlling road accidents in the State. The latest road accident at Kishtwar though did not result in any fatalities but many people were injured and a few of them had to be airlifted to Jammu for specialised treatment (DE, Apr 30).

It is a very sad part of the traffic in the State in general and Jammu in particular that lives are either lost or people are injured in traffic related incidents on the roads. Whether the roads are hilly or plain accidents occur in regular fashion and have become more or less a permanent feature of the traffic scenario in Jammu. These accidents have to be brought to a stop and if that is not possible then atleast efforts have to be done so that the rate of accidents on a day to day basis is minimised. For it we need to make traffic department more effective. There is a long felt need that traffic department is short of staff. There has to be a special drive so that traffic department is adequately staffed and manned. Overloading and overspeeding whether on hill roads or on plains is to be checked. This is the major cause of the road accidents. People who indulge in highspeed and overtaking highspeeds should be punished.

The roads of Jammu are turning into killing fields and all efforts have to be employed by the Government to see that accidents rate is reduced to the lowest possible level.

Moral values

Sir,

Moral values are a hall mark of any civilization. It distinguishes mankind from the animal world. Apparently, a man without morality is worst than an animal. Here, question arises, what actually the morality is ? It is the spirit of education and knowledge which establishes and practises the principles of right and wrong. No justice can be expected, no duty can be well performed until one has and maintains law of morality. But the present system of education, more or less, fails to inculcate and cultivate moral values intrinsically needed in a child in school/college stage. Resultantly, the values which were considered significantly high once upon a time appear to be going down a slide. The materialistic attitude and approach of all, leaving exceptions aside, has verily proved beyond doubt the morality, ethics and uprightness have disminished beyond measure. The wave of corruption is rising unabated despite frantic efforts and hard legislation to check it. Therefore, until malices like such are not checked by stringent laws, progress and prosperity of the country would only be a dream-like. People have to come up to show example in this regard. Here, the big guns of the society/government need to come down with unfailing confidence and determination to make the society free from all such immoral activities prevalent and which have overshadowed the whole phenomenon of our life.

Global warming

Sir,

Global warming is staring at our face. The rise in the temperatures indicates that the planet is getting warmer. The main culprit is the burning of fossil fuels. Since the advent of industrial revolution the burning of coal reached huge proportions. When oil was found in the last decades of nineteenth century it gave a great phillip to industralisation and transportation.

Oil, Petrol, Diesel and Gas is being used in thousand of tonnes per day which leaves more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The rise in the level of Co2 helps the energy and heat to get trapped in the atmosphere. This constant and continuous phenomenon over the last one hundred and fifty years has resulted in the global warming. Already the signs of the global warming are there. Polar ice has started melting. Glaciers are receding and weather pattern is showing change. To reverse these effects we have to use clean energy and plant more and more trees to make our life ecofriendly otherwise without any doubt there is a catastrophe waiting for the life on the planet.
