JAMMU, May 4: Property worth crores of rupees was saved in timely action by the Fire Services men after a major fire broke out at Narwal Grid Station of PDD and the periphery of Bachan SFC depot this afternoon.

Reports said at around 1.15 pm, the Gandhinagar Fire Station received a call that dry bushes in the premises and periphery of Narwal Bye-Pass, Gladni Grid Station caught massive fire and it was spreading towards adjoining Bachan depot. It was Sunday and most of the employees were enjoying holiday.

The Power Development Department has installed large electric transformers worth crores at this grid station and the fire was advancing towards them. In Bachan SFC depot, huge dumps of Deodar and Koil timber worth crores came under fire threat. The SFC men also sounded alarming bells.

Divisional Commissioner Jammu and other senior officers of PDD and SFC also rushed to the site besides senior police officers.

Director Fire Services Jammu, R K Sodhi himself rushed to the spot to supervise the operation.

Earlier, three vehicles from Gandhinagar Fire Station were sent to control the fire but sensing the gravity of threat total eight fire tenders from City and Canal Road Fire Stations were pressed into service.

Mr Sodhi when contacted said though no infrastructure damage was reported in the incident and only dry bushes were involved, yet the gravity of threat perception was much high due to installation of transformers worth crores. He said fire had spread over to the fencing near Bachan Depot and it was posing threat to the timber dumped there. He claimed that it took about three hours to the fire men to fully control

Fire in yet another Kishtwar village, 4 houses gutted

JAMMU, May 4: Four houses were completely gutted and around 25 cattle heads perished in a devastating and mysterious fire at village Dhungai in Dachhan block of the Kishtwar district. However, the members of all the four families escaped unhurt.

This was the second fire incident in Kishtwar district during the past one week. Earlier, on April 28, a devastating fire broke out in Ongoi village gutting 25 houses and perishing more than 800 cattle heads.

Reports said that on the intervening night of May 3 and 4, fire broke out in the Dhungai village of Dachhan block, 70 kilometres from the Kishtwar town gutting 4 houses completely and burning alive around 25 cattle heads.

On the receipt of information about the incident, the district administration deputed revenue staff to the village with the directions to distribute Rs 5000 cash assistance to each affected family besides one month’s ration free of cost.

"We have also directed the revenue staff to prepare their cases for relief under NCRF", Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kishtwar, Riaz Ahmed Zargar said when contacted. He added that police teams have also been deputed to the village to ascertain the cause behind the fire.

It is worthwhile to mention here that the administration has yet to ascertain the cause behind the fire in Ongoi village.

4 killed in accidents

JAMMU, May 4: Four persons were killed in separate accidents reported from different parts of Jammu.

Police spokesman said that one person was killed when he was hit by a speeding vehicle at Lakhanpur Toll Post. The critically injured pedestrian was immediately rushed to hospital where doctors pronounced him as brought dead.

The deceased has been identified as Laxman Rai, son of Pardesi Rai of Hoshinagar, Uttar Pradesh and presently residing at Ludhiana.

In another accident, an unidentified middle aged man was rushed to death by a train at Bari Brahamana. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the Government Medical College Hospital for identification and post-mortem.

Meanwhile, an unidentified youth was killed and one Raj Kumar, son of Des Raj of Bari Brahamana sustained severe injuries when a motor cycle was hit by a tipper number JK02T-5342 at Kaluchak.

The condition was injured was stated to be critical when reports last came in. The body of deceased has been kept in the mortuary for identification and post-mortem.

The spokesman said that an unidentified woman of about 65 years of age was knocked to death by an unknown vehicle at Manwal.

Minor girl among 3 found hanging

KATHUA, May 4: The body of a 16-year-old girl was found hanging at her residence at village Dhani, under Rajbagh police station’s jurisdiction this morning while two more women died under mysterious circumstances at Bani and Hiranagar today.

A police spokesman giving information said that on receiving an information regarding the incident, a Rajbagh police party rushed to the village. It was found that girl’s body was hanging on the ceiling hook of a room.

The deceased was identified as Anu Bala, daughter of Ashok Kumar of Dhani village. While the family members refused to divulge the reason behind this incident, they were termed it as case of suicide. However, a case under section 174 CrPC was registered by police.

The body of the girl was shifted to Kathua hospital for post-mortem.

In yet another incident, Rekha Devi, wife of Jagdish Raj, resident of Chhan Morian in Hiranagar was found dead in her house. The police registered a case and started investigation. The family was claiming that woman committed suicide.

A report from Bani said that 21-year-old Kanta devi, wife of Bhushan Kumar, resident of village Bakon died under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws house this morning. The villagers informed police about the matter. A police party shifted the body to Bani hospital for postmortem and registered a case for investigation.

SEOA resents delay in regularization

JAMMU, May 4: The school education officers (Headmaster cadre) today expressed concern over the delaying tactics being adopted by the Government over the regularization of their cadre, in a meeting held here today.

The meeting under the banner of School Education Officer’s Association (SEOA) was held under the chairmanship of Subhash Khanna, president.

The members said that the Government was delaying the regularization of HMs/Sr HMs/ZEPOs/ZEOs since 1997, which was leading to only to mess, as majority of officers either have died or retired or in the process of retiring in their own pay and grade.

Concern was also expressed over the fact that the genuine demand of the removal of time bar for promotion of the cadre, as agreed upon by the Government has not been conceded till date.

The cadre also highlighted that 40 posts of ZEOs were lying vacant in Jammu division causing loss to Education Department due to non-availability of officers in different zones.

It was also highlighted that the post of DEPOs/Dy CEOs were being filled by promoting the people from other cadres, which were actually meant for the cadre.

The members appealed the Government for speedy redressal of their genuine demands. Those who spoke on the occasion included Raj Singh, S Rajinder Singh, Kh Hussain Mohd, Kuldeep Singh Langeh, Puran Singh Manhas and S Gurdev Singh.

Leopard creates terror, kills cattle near Budhi

KATHUA, May 4: A full grown leopard has created a terror in the several hamlets around Budhi-Merath villages in Kathua district.

Reports said this wild beast has killed more than a dozen cattle in Bhudi, Merath, Kaungani, Dinga Amb and Kakra area in last one month. Due to the intense heat several water sources have gone dry.

This leopard while searching for water, landed at Sauthli village at around 5.30 pm. A small artificial water pool was created by a farmer for his cattle at a pucca water tank in his field. This leopard was spotted by the family members also. The wild beast drank water and then killed a 5-month old calf. Other cattle escaped from the area sensing trouble.

As the villagers raised alarm, the leopard escaped towards nearby jungle, leaving behind his dead prey. The villagers of the area have been terrorised of the free movement of this animal and even they have stopped sleeping in the open compound despite intense hot weather conditions due to the fear of leopard’s attack.

The people have urged the district administration and the Wild Life authorities to capture the animal and put him in the cage or wild life park as it was giving them sleepless nights. They indicated that the same leopard has been freely moving in the area of 20 to 30 sq km and all the people were passing sleepless nights due to its terror..

Clerical staff’s strike enters 39th day

JAMMU, May 4: Pen down strike of the Clerical cadre employees has entered the 39th cnsecutive day.

The strike has been launched under the banner of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh All Department Clerical Staff Association in support of the demand of clerical cadre to remove anomalies in the pay grades. They are demanding that pay grades of junior, senior and head assistants be given hike as done in case of other cadres.

In a meeting of the central executive of the Association held here today, the members chalked out strategy to block highway and hold demonstrations tomorrow besides ‘Gherao’ of the civil secretriat, Srinagar. It was also resolved to continue their strike till their demand is addressed by the government.

JAMMU, May 4: Gandhi Nagar police today arrested two miscreants during a naka laid at cremation ground in Shastri Nagar and recovered a stolen motor-cycle besides intoxicants from their possession.

They have been identified as Tarvinder Singh alias Kaka son of Maan Singh, a resident of Digiana and Dheeraj Kumar alias Tony son of Darshan Lal R/o Nai Basti.

Police recovered a stolen TVX motorbike, 11 intoxicant capsules and 25 injections from their possession.

Questioning of Tarvinder Singh, who had nine cases registered against him and was earlier affiliated with an outfit, revealed that he along with Tony had been purchasing intoxicants from Tango Road in Pathankote and smuggling them here.

They were selling drugs to youths on exhorbitant rates.

A case against the accused has been registered at Gandhi Nagar police station. Arrests were made by a Gandhi Nagar police station party led by SHO Inspector Mohd Rafiq and Incharge Digiana police post Sub Inspector Vijay Sharma.

Natrang stages its weekly play

JAMMU, May 4: ‘Bharat Chhoro’- a play in Hindi was staged at Natrang Studio, here today. Written and directed by Balwant Thakur, the play is a satire on the contemporary political situation of the country.

The play is set at a public function being organised to celebrate the independence day of the country. A sequence is being enacted to educate the younger generation about the history of the freedom struggle.

Suddenly a youth appears from the audience and questions the relevance of showcasing such repeated stories time and again. He emphasises that in the last 61 years our country has witnessed emergence of big challenges which are more dangerous than the British rule.

In these years the saviours of the democracy—our politicians have eaten up vitals of our country and in return gifted us with the infection of corruption, nepotism, anarchy, extremism and fundamentalism. The youth invites all to come forward and unite against all such diseases which are bigger challanges to our progress, unity, sovereignty and well being of the nation.

Our country needs much bigger revolution than the freedom struggle to flush out the enemies of the nation.

Those who acted in the play are Gaurav Jamwal, Rohit Verma, Rahul Singh, Pankush Verma, Mohammad Yasin and Ankush Lakhnotra.

Latti, Duddu people call on Saroori

UDHAMPUR, May 4: A deputation of people of Latti, Duddu area led by Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Narinder Sharma, met the Minister of State for Education G M Saroori and apprised him of the problems being faced by students community in their belt.

The others in the deputation included Block Congress Committee, Latti Duddu block and Ghulam Sarvar Malik, Chairman, Minority Cell of Congress Party.

The deputation demanded that school timings of the educational institutions be brought at par with those of Doda district atleast for students upto 9th standard, so that they may not face any difficulty in pursuing their studies.

The Minister gave the deputation a patient hearing and assured that the same would be done at the first instance.

The deputation, which also included Raj Mohd Naik impressed upon the Minister about sordid affairs of things of Higher Secondary School Latti, where there was no lecturer to teach subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology and English.

Mr Saroori after listening to the deputation with patience gave a nod to effect change in school timings and also assured that the required strength of teachers in respective subjects would also be met with shortly.

JKTUC forms State body

JAMMU, May 4: Jammu & Kashmir Trade union Congress (JKTUC) has constituted new body headed by Subash Chander Sharma, its newly elected president.

Didar Singh is the new senior vice president, Omkar Nath Sharma, Raj Kumar Badyal, Bimla Slathia and Kalyan Singh Parihar - all vice presidents, Raghubir Sharma, R K Chadha, Vijayinder Kumar Sharma and Shafqat Ali -secreraties, Deepak Sharma- new cahsier while Sham Lal Sharma, is the chief organiser.

Meanwhile, JKTUC chief has urged the state government to redress the demands of the workers including enhancement of daily wage rate from Rs 70 to Rs 150, removal of disparity in wages of Kashmir and Jammu workers (PHE), conversion of COLA into DA, release of balance payment of PHE workers and removal of disparity at all levels.

Implementation of modified SRO 294 demanded

KATHUA, May 4: The district unit of All India Confederation of SC/ST/OBC Organization, Kathua has expressed serious concern over, what it termed as lackadaisical attitude of State Government in implementing the modified SRO-294.

In a general body meeting chaired by BD Ladwal, the confederation asserted that in the face of non-implementation of the SRO-294, socially backward classes are undergoing hardships.

Those who expressed their views in the meeting were Bansi Lal, Lok Nath, Madan Lal, Behari Lal and Hans Raj.

Rajpal elected RBTWA president

JAMMU, May 4: Rajinder Bazar Traders’ Welfare Association (RBTWA) today elected Atul Rajpal of Saraswati Financiers and Traders as their new president with a voice vote.

The voice vote was initiated by election commissioner, Arun Kumar Gupta (CA) after the only opponent Tripan K Vij of Jai Sai Electronics announced at the last moment to retire from the contest.

The election commissioner also took strong exception of Vij’s move to retire after the passage of the withdrawal deadline and decided to go for voice vote instead of declaring Rajpal as unanimously elected.

Among others also elected included Raj Kumar Gupta of Ess Kay Photostat and Balraj Gupta of Gupta Furnishers as general secretary and treasurer respectively.

JAMMU, May 4: Minister for Health and Medical Education Mangat Ram Sharma today inspected Shri Atam Vallabh Jain clinic at Fathu Chougan run by NGO headed by Chairman Sudarshan Jain. The clinic provides artificial limbs free of cost to patients not only from the Jammu and Kashmir but also to those of adjoining states. As such this type of facility is not available upto New Delhi and therefore, patients have no choice except to approach the clinic for treatment.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister said that Government would render all its help to encourage their cause of selfless service of humanity as such NGOs are a boon to the society. He asked them to open more such clinics in the remote corners of the State as their contribution to the handicapped gives them an opportunity to live in the society with greater self confidence and economic independence .

He was informed that treatment in the clinic for artificial limbs is done on every Ist Sunday of the month and continues for 3 days i.e upto Tuesday. All the outsider patients are provided free boarding and lodging in the clinic premises.

An expert technician from Shri Mahavir Viklang Sahyog Samiti, Kota, Rajasthan reached here today on Sunday morning and started examining the patients in coordination of local Dr. Anita Gupta. Measurements were taken so that manufacturing of their respective limbs can commence. An average 40-50 patients are examined and provided with facilities like jackolls, crutches, callipers to Polio affected children, lower and upper limbs, arms etc.

Mr. Surdarshan Jain informed the Minister that NGO was established during the year 1981as a weekly programme under the guidance of the Ex Governor of State Mr. Jagmohan who suggested for organizing it on a regular basis keeping in view the difficulties to patients.

The NGO also contemplating to start free eye and dental care unit as well in the newly construct building at Jain Nagar by 16th July, 2008.

On the visit of Jain Guru and All India Acharian Shri Shrud Bhaskar Dharma Durinder, Secretary Pardeep Jain informed the Minister that last year grant in aid was Rs. 1.10 lakh, this year Rs. 2.75 lakh have been sanctioned but not yet disbursed. More than Rs. 12 lakh deficit is covered from donors due to personal efforts of the members.

Among Vice President Sushil Kumar Jain, Prital Jain, Parveen Seth, Kimili Jain were also present on the occasion.

Protesters block Hemkunt Express

JAMMU, May 4: Jammu Tawi-Rishikesh Hemkunt Express was stranded for half an hour at Jammu Railway Station this evening when Rehri Union and other workers staged a demonstration in front of the train in protest against alleged assault on one of the rehriwalls by the PSO of a jailer.

Sources said the jailer was on way to board Hemkunt Express along with her family when one of her PSO allegedly misbehaved with a rehriwalla. This provoked rehriwalla who shouted slogans against police and stood in front of Hemkunt Express demanding action against the PSO.

The protest delayed departure of the train by about half an hour.

Later, on the assurance of police, the rehriwallas called off their protest and allowed Hemkunt Express to proceed.

Corporator demands restoration of tube well at Barnai

JAMMU, May 4: Corporator Ward 65 and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Omi Khajuria has expressed grave concern over the failure of Public Health Engineering (PHE), Department in restoring the tube well at Barnai.

In a statement issued here, today, Mr Khajuria alleged that the people of the surrounding areas were facing water scarcity due to non functioning of the tube well.

He said despite making repeated pleas to the authorities of the Department they failed to renovate the tube well till date. In an appeal to Minister of PHE and Irrigation, Dillawar Mir, Khajuria has sought his immediate intervention in the matter. He warned that people will be forced to resort to agitation incase the tube well was not restored immediately.

People's Welfare Society’s plea to Government

SRINAGAR, May 4: People's Welfare Society, Ganderbal has criticized the Government for selling employment forms for the recruitment of unemployed youth through J&K Bank at Rs 50 per form.

The society in a meeting today held under the chairmanship of its patron, Mir Ghulam Rasool Butwani has said this has put an extra burden on unemployed youth. This way the Government has set a wrong precedence and it is an exploitation of the youth. Moreover, the meeting alleged even forms are not available in concerned bank branches which again adds to the woes of the youth.

The meeting, which was also addressed by the president of the Society, Mohammed Yousf Shah demanded that unemployed youth be asked to fill up their forms for recruitment in their respective districts and youth from one district should not be allowed to appear in another district as it will hamper the fair selection process.

The meeting in an appeal to Government urged it to look into the matter.
