Exporters' pet duty refund scheme may be extended by a year

NEW DELHI, Mar 25: Barely a month before the annual review of the Foreign Trade Policy, the government today said it is considering extension of exporters' flagship tax refund scheme, Duty Entitlement Pass Book (DEPB), for another year.

"We are discussing extension of the DEPB scheme for one year and things would be decided by the end of the month," Commerce Secretary G K Pillai said on the sidelines of a CII function here.

He indicated that the government would provide measures in the ensuing trade policy to the employment-oriented export sectors.

The commerce ministry is seeking extension of the interest subsidies offered to exporters on their bank loans beyond March 31, he said.

The government had appointed an expert committee to work out a feasible alternative to the DEPB scheme, which had come under the WTO scanner. However, it has not been able to find an acceptable alternative to the DEPB due to opposition from the exporters.

The DEPB scheme, which has been extended on an year-to-year basis, is slated to expire by end of this fiscal. Exporters' margins have been eroding due to an over 12 per cent rise in value of the rupee against the dollar. (PTI)
