Sania rises to 31st in WTA rankings

NEW DELHI, Mar 24: Sania Mirza’s commendable run at last week’s Pacific Life Open that ended in the fourth round has helped the Indian ace gain a spot to be 31st in the latest WTA rankings issued today.

Sania, who battled a wrist injury through her fourth-round loss to Slovak Daniela Hantuchova in the USD 2.1 million event, now has 917 ranking points.

The Hyderabadi star has also gained three places in her doubles rankings, moving up to 22nd with 1830 points after the semifinal appearance in the Pacific Life Open.

Sania and her American partner Bethanie Mattek had lost to the Chinese pair of Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in the last-four stage.

Meanwhile, in the ATP doubles rankings, Mahesh Bhupathi leapt four spots to 13th in the latest list.

The Indian veteran who reached the doubles quarterfinal of men’s master series event with Bahamas’ partner Mark Knowles, has 2740 points.

However, his estranged partner Leander Paes dropped a couple of rungs despite matching Bhupathi’s show in the event with his Australian partner Paul Hanley.

Paes is placed 20th with 2070 points. (PTI)

Strauss, Bell centuries put England in charge

NAPIER (New Zealand), Mar 24: Andrew Strauss made an unbeaten 173 and Ian Bell 110 as England ground down New Zealand to close in on a series clinching victory on the third day of the third cricket Test today.

Strauss and Bell shared a 187-run partnership which emphasized the dominance of England’s batsmen who had given its team a total of 416 for five and an unapproachable lead of 501 at stumps with two days remaining.

Their centuries were dissimilar in style but equally important as England ruthlessly consolidated a 85-run lead it held after the first innings and the 176-run advantage it had built by the end of the second day.

Strauss’s 11th Test century, his first in 16 Tests, was a feat of patience and application. He set himself as the anchor of the innings and provided the stability that allowed Bell and later Paul Collingwood (22) and Tim Ambrose (28) to attack the bowlers and more rapidly build England’s lead.

Strauss’ magnificent innings, which occupied more than 7 1/2 hours by stumps, achieved the twin purposes of cementing his place in the England side and driving home England’s massive advantage in a match which will decide the three-Test series.

Strauss played a flowing cover drive for four off Chris Martin, his 16th boundary, to reach his century after five hours and nine minutes at the crease. He had resumed his innings at 42 not out today and went on to his century from 226 balls, as the lynchpin of the England innings.

Strauss’ solidity allowed Bell to play more adventurously as they built a partnership which added 135 runs between lunch and tea, wearing down the New Zealand bowlers.

Daniel Vettori picked up a heavy bowling load on an easing pitch and had three for 135. (AGENCIES)

Lanka tightens grip on Day 2

PROVIDENCE (Guyana), Mar 24: Sri Lanka collected the prized scalp of Chris Gayle to strengthen their hold on the opening Test against West Indies after their captain Mahela Jayawardene posted his 22nd Test hundred.

Left-arm fast-medium bowler Chaminda Vaas inflicted an early blow to the West Indies’ batting, when he removed Gayle for the seventh time in Tests, as the home team reached 29 for one when stumps were drawn on the second day at the Guyana national stadium yesterday.

In stark contrast, the fortunes were much richer for Jayawardene. He rode his luck to hit the top score of 136, and so too Vaas, to help the visitors reach 476 for eight declared in their first innings.

With a little over an hour remaining before the close, Sri Lanka could hardly believe their fortune, when Gayle was adjudged lbw to Vaas for a duck - his fifth against this opponent - playing half forward to a well-pitched delivery.

The Sri Lankans however, failed to make further headway when Ramnaresh Sarwan, playing his first Test in nine months, joined Devon Smith.

Vaas felt the weight of Sarwan’s bat when the batsman played a silky drive through mid-off for his first boundary, and Rangana Herath also saw him execute a searing extra cover drive for another boundary. (agencies)
