Tax evasion
Sir,
A news report was
published in this paper about traders evading
income tax for years (Mar 20). It is a sad state
of affairs that tax evasion has been going on for
the last many years. This is a bad trend and
should be stopped forthwith.
Tax collection is
an important source of revenue generation. How
can a Government run if people whether they are
employees or traders do not pay tax. The money
collected through taxes is used for the
developmental works. It is also used for the
defence of the country. A country which is short
of revenue cannot built infrastructure and also
cannot defend its borders well. Hence there is a
great need to make people understand that tax
collection is as important as anything else in
life, perhaps it is more important than many
things.
It is distressing
to note that for years thousands of traders have
been evading income tax. Imagine how much they
would have paid in these years and definitely
that money would have gone for the development of
infrastructure. This may be tip of the iceberg.
Now the income tax department should ensure that
these traders are asked to pay tax
retrospectively. The reasons as to why these
traders did not pay taxes also need to be
ascertained. Meanwhile the Income Tax Department
has to be more vigilant in these matter in
future.

Power generation
Sir,
Our State is
facing a chronic shortage of power. Despite
having some of the best water resources available
we are still importing power worth thousands of
crores.
Some years ago the
Department of Power embarked upon e-metering
consumers in order to check pilferage and
overdrawal of power. People by and large have
responded well to this scheme. But the matter of
concern is that the Department has failed to
e-meter all consumers. This would have generated
hundreds of crores of more revenue for the
department.
On the power
generation front the Government has not done any
significant progress. Sixty years have passed and
we still do not produce power enough for our
State leave alone the idea of exports. States
like Himachal and Haryana are way ahead us. The
tragedy is that our State was second in the whole
country to have a power station way back in 1905
at Mohra. But we have not strengthened that great
legacy. Now, as per the news reports published in
this paper, the Govt is mooting over the
construction of a thermal power station. It is
good that the site has been selected for the
project which will be in Kathua District. This
project should be made a fast track project and
completed within three years time. Other projects
should also be undertaken so that power
generation is increased. People are fed up with
power cuts in summer and winter. We wait eagerly
for that day when power cuts will become history.

Promote classical music
Sir,
Music is a world
of harmony. Our country has produced the best
music and musicians in the world. Everybody, who
listens to the classical Indian music becomes
raptured with joy.
Our State has
produced good music . The musical history of the
State is as old as the civilization is. Neelmat
puran gives a graphic account of the musicians in
the State. In modern times the State has produced
musicians in the State who have done exceedingly
well in the country and outside it. Pandit Shiv
Kumar Sharma and famous Sopori family have
brought honour to the State.
In this regard a
news report was published in this paper (Mar 20)
in which a news was carried about the willingness
of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma to start promotion of
classical music in the State. Classical music is
loosing its grip over the people become of the
fast but music that young people seen to like.
But this high pitched fast beat music does not
last long. It creates a momentary influence and
then vanishes away. The fast paced music has a
cumulative bad influence on the brain. On the
other side the time tested classical music has
its own quality. It is heartening to read that a
doyen of Indian classical music is willing to
help and instruct the students in the State in
great classical music of the country. We
Jammuites hope that he will soon start an academy
of classic music where students will learn
classical music under his instruction.
