I’m little worried right now, says Sania

INDIAN WELLS (USA), Mar 19: Sania Mirza is worried over her recurrent wrist injury as it could either result in a surgery or require her to change her grip and action, an idea she is not keen on at this stage of her career.

Sania, who played in pain before losing out to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the Pacific Life Open pre-quarters here yesterday, said she would try to avoid surgery but was also not keen on changing the way she grips the racket at the crucial stage in her career.

"Right now it’s very, very painful... I couldn’t move my wrist," she said after her 1-6, 6-7 (4/7) loss.

"Usually it doesn’t get this sore, so I’m a little worried right now. It gets sore and then it gets ok when I ice it and do whatever I have to do," she told reporters.

Sania, seeking MRI to diagnose the actual problem, said she would look for some other options to cure it.

"It’s a big step to even change it half an inch because my game is my forehand. You know, it’s not easy to change a grip.(PTI)

Shocked at Hair recall, Inzamam wants
PCB to review issue

KARACHI, Mar 19: Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq, who was at the helm of the oval fiasco, has expressed "shock" over the reinstatement of umpire Darrell Hair by the ICC and asked the cricket board to further review the issue.

"It has come as a shocker to me. Especially after all that happened in the Oval Test and afterwards. What more proof they required (that) Hair was not fit to stand in international matches," Inzamam told over phone.

Inzamam, currently playing in the Indian Cricket League, felt the Pakistan board needed to learn something from the way the Indian board backed its players on contentious issues and take a stronger stand on the issue.

"I don’t know what happened in this ICC meeting. I don’t know the details but what I know is that after the Oval Test, it was clear hair should not supervise international matches. Why that has changed is surprising to me. Our board still needs to review this issue."

Inzamam was the captain of the Pakistan team which refused to continue play after tea on the fourth day of the Oval Test between Pakistan and England in August 2006 after Hair and fellow umpire Billy Doctrove penalised them five runs on charges of ball tampering.

Hair and Doctrove then called off the match, which leading to the first-ever forfeiture in the Test cricket history.

An ICC adjudicator later cleared Pakistan of ball tampering charges but banned Inzamam for four matches for misconduct while submitting a negative report about Hair which led to his ouster from the elite panel of umpires. (AGENCIES)

Woolmer remembered by Pakistanis

KARACHI, Mar 19: Pakistan’s former coach Bob Woolmer must have been remembered by many former and current players with fond words on his first death anniversary but his predecessor Javed Miandad preferred to remind that the South African made little contribution to the country’s cricket.

Miandad, who was replaced by Woolmer after a home series defeat to India in mid 2004, said while one always must try to remember a departed soul with good words, the facts must also not be hidden.

"Woolmer might have been a good human being and I have no doubt about that. But when you talk about his contribution to Pakistan cricket than the bottom line is he didn’t leave a very big imprint behind," Miandad told.

"If you look at his tenure he didn’t achieve much with our players and the way we went out of the World Cup it was very disappointing. It was sad the way he died. But the fact is his contribution as a coach to Pakistan were not much," he said.

Miandad said it was strange that other local players had done more for Pakistan cricket but the board did not acknowledge their contribution while talking about how much woolmer had done for the game in the country.

Woolmer died under mysterious circumstances in a hotel room in Jamaica, just a few hours after the Pakistan team’s unexpected elimination at the hands of Ireland in the World Cup.

Another former captain Rashid Latif said Woolmer’s death had come as a shock to him.

"I knew him little but he appeared to be a good man. But unfortunately he couldn’t translate his reputation as a super coach into good results for the team."

Pakistani players Danish Kaneria, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Asif, who worked with Woolmer remembered him with fond words.

Kaneria said he still could not get over the nightmare of the time when Pakistan crashed out of the World Cup and next day Woolmer died.

"It was horrible even now when I think about those days I gives me the shivers. We were already depressed by our exit and when we learnt about Bob’s death it left us numb. It was a tragedy of the highest order. Worse followed when we were treated murder suspects," said Kaneria, who was a member of the World Cup squad.

Afridi said he admired Woolmer for his cricketing mind.

"He was always working with you on your game. He was a good coach and got along well with the players."

Asif said Woolmer had supported him a lot after his disappointing test debut in early 2005 in Australia.

"He was a good backer of good players and understood cricket and players psyche. Unfortunately, he could not go out on a happy note." (PTI)

Hashim Amla’s brother to captain SA emerging squad

DURBAN, Mar 19: Ahmed Amla, the younger brother of South African opening batsman Hashim Amla, has been appointed captain of the country’s emerging squad to play a series of matches against Australia, India and New Zealand in Australia in July.

The 28-year-old Amla, who is currently the captain of the Kwazulu-Natal provincial team is one of three players of Indian origin selected for the emerging squad.

Yusuf Abdullah and Imraan Khan also of Kwazulu-Natal are the other two players of Indian origin in the team that will try to defend the title South Africa has won twice in a row.

Calling the annual SA emerging squad tour to Australia as one of the most important events on South Africa’s calendar cricket SA CEO, Gerald Majola, said the tour was a good training ground for future national players.

"We have won the last two tournaments and players such as Johan Botha, Vernon Philander and JP Duminy have come out of this experience and done well in the national team" Majola said.

"The SA emerging squad forms an important part of CSA’s high performance programme which helps us prepare players for international cricket," he added. (AGENCIES)

In-form Federer flies into fourth round

INDIAN WELLS (California), Mar 19: World number one Roger Federer looked like his old dominant self Tuesday as he swept aside France’s Nicolas Mahut to reach the fourth round of the ATT WTA Pacific Life Open.

Federer, whose uncharacteristic slow start to the season has led to suggestions his position atop the world rankings could be in jeopardy, showed any such prediction was premature as he crushed Mahut 6-1, 6-1 in just 53 minutes.

"I don’t know if I can be better than that," Federer said. Added Mahut: "I had the feeling I was a junior and he was a pro. It was the kind of match that at the end you feel like you want to ask him how much for the lesson."

Mahut won only four points against Federer’s serve and his only point against the Swiss’ serve in the first set was a Federer double fault.

Perhaps more impressive was Federer’s return game, which surprised both Mahut and the Swiss himself.

Federer, who has yet to win a title in 2008, bowed out of the Australian Open in the semi-finals and lost in the first round at Dubai.

He has pinned much of his early-season sluggishness to the effects of mononucleosis, which disrupted his usual training and practice. (AGENCIES)

SSP, Jeev spearhead Indian challenge in WGC-CA C’ship

DORAL (USA), Mar 19: Country’s latest golfing sensation SSP Chowrasia and seasoned campaigner Jeev Milkha Singh will spearhead the Indian challenge in the elite WGC-CA championship, which gets underway here tomorrow.

Chowrasia has been paired with Korean Jj Choi and Henrik Stenson of Sweden while Jeev will have Retief Goosen and Sean O’Hair for company in the first two rounds.

Last month’s Indian masters triumph catapulted Chowrasia to the top 10 of the European Tour Order Of Merit, also earning him a berth for the prestigious event and the son of a former greenkeeper at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club will find himself in an elite league, headlined by the peerless Tiger Woods.

On the other hand, Jeev has twice seen the silverware slip through his fingers this season, including the play-off defeat at the Ballantine’s championship in Korea last weekend.

Jeev, who finished tied 28th last season, however, believes his game was good enough to challenge the best in the business.

"I’m looking forward to Doral now because I’m playing well," he said at the weekend.

"So maybe, there’s something better waiting for me there," Jeev said. (AGENCIES)
