Cancer hospital
Sir,
As per the news
report published in this paper (Jan 28) the super
speciality cancer hospital will soon become
operational in Katra, in the month of May this
year.
Being the first
dedicated cancer hospital in the State this
hospital shall cater to a long standing need of
the people of the State. Rated as one of the
feared killer of human beings, cancer is a
dreaded disease which has not been yet curable.
Despite rapid advances made in the field of
cancer, research and treatment in medical terms
called onocology, there is not a complete cure
for advanced stages of cancer. The detection of
this dreaded disease at an early stage makes it
possible for the doctors to treat it but the
early detection is very difficult.
In this context
the development of this dedicated cancer hospital
is one of the big achievements of the Shri Mata
Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. About two hundred and
fifty crore will be spent on this hightech
hospital. The important point is that such a huge
sum has been raised without any Government aid or
any help from other financial institution. This
is remarkable. Here the unseen hand of the
Goddess has come to the aid of the people. It is
hoped that this hospital will not only prove path
breaking in treating cancer but will prove
successful in educating the people of the State
about the various causes and prevention of
cancer.
Jai Mata Di.

Shrinking Dal Lake
Sir,
According to a
news report published in this paper (Jan 23) the
most famous tourist and beauty spot in the State
Dal Lake is shrinking fast. The lake has shrunk
to one third of its size in last centary.
According to the news report, in year 1900 the
area under the lake was 50 sq kms but now the
same has shrunk to almost 15 kilometers.
Encroachments have
been a routine on the lake. Vast areas of the
Lake are now under houses and shops. What a sad
tale for all of us. This lake had a potential of
attracting thousands of tourists but now if the
encroachments happen the way they are happening
then that day is not far when this prime tourist
spot will cease to exist.
There are
allusions to the lake in past. In ancient
literature the lake was spread over vast area.
There were elaborate system of canals and
backwaters which connected the lake with the
Eastern parts of Srinagar City. Rainawari,
Naisark, Sathu etc. functioned as ports of the
lake system. We are reminded of venice in staly
which is surrounded by water. But due to myopic
vision of the planners Nalah Mar which served as
natural escape route was filled in. We should
have made Nalah Mar more effective and clean. The
waters of Telbal Nallah which also feeds the
river is in bad health. Known for its great
willows and water, the Nallah is only a pale
shadow of itself. Had the lake not been fed by
its own natural springs it would have died long
time ago.
We need to do
something drastic so that this great lake is
saved from extinction. Huge sums have been given
to LAWDA (Lake and Waterways Development
Authority). It is hoped that the Government will
ensure that this money is utilised to save the
lake and not to fill in the pockets of people who
are directly or indirectly connected with saving
this lake.

Better living
Sir,
Life carries
everything in its wake. Birth and death are
essential parts of the destiny of man. Between
birth and death is a portion which is called
life. Our aspirations and our hopes as well as
our life is centered around this very portion .
If there were no life who would aspire for
whatever he deemed fit to the aspired for.
Our aspirations
are always high. Without understanding about our
short comings we desire for such things which are
not possible. Each one of us wants to lead a
celebrity life. We have to realise that everyone
among us cannot become a President, a Prime
Minister or any other powerful person. Everyone
of us has a life cutout for us. We should not
despair if we are not rich or famous. We should
not feel remorse in life that we are not capable
of doing anything important. We should not feel
despondent that there is nothing worth while for
us to do.
To overcome
despondency let us understand that we need to
develop the art of living. We need to do a some
self talking with our selves. If we try to make
ourselves better that would be more than enough.
To be better person is not easier. Infact it is
more difficult than to become a powerful person
we normally aspire to become. We have to make
ourselves better humans. If there are better
husbands, better parents, better sons, better
brothers, better friends and above all better
citizens then we can shape the world in a much
better way. Whatever modest positions we are in
we can set challenges for ourselves. We can
improve ourselves in any role that we are
playing. We may make small strides but we should
not falter in our vision. Hankering after
position and power would not help to make us
better human beings. Let us build in us a power
to sacrifice. To renunciate our egos and our bad
baggage is the key to a better livings. Let us
start trying this from today.
Yours etc...
