Exhibition of Suman Gupta’s paintings
‘The Wandering Balladeer’ opened

By Ravinder Kaul

It is a major art event of the year. When an artist, who has held a solo exhibition of his paintings in United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland, curated a show of contemporary Indian art in Nicosia, Cyprus, exhibited his works at the Nehru Centre, London, Millennium Art Show, Manhattan, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, Art Today and Art Indus galleries in New Delhi, participated in art camps in New Zealand and Switzerland and won a number of prestigious awards, including the Lalit Kala Akademi Award, considered to be the highest award of the country in the field of fine arts, decides to exhibit his works in his home town, as a precursor to a major solo exhibition in the national capital, it has to be considered one of the most prestigious art events of the year.

A two day exhibition of the recent paintings of Suman Gupta, who has been rated as one of the top ten contemporary artists of the country, was inaugurated here today at the Rinchen Bzangpo Art Gallery in the General Zorawar Singh Auditorium Complex in Jammu University by Gulchain Singh Charak, Minister of Higher Education. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, presided over the function. The exhibition has been organised by the University of Jammu, in collaboration with ‘The Artists’ and titled "The Wandering Balladeer".

Speaking on the occasion, Gulchain Singh Charak lauded the stature attained by Suman Gupta at the national and international level. He said that the paintings of Suman Gupta depict the life and culture of Dogras in a very creative manner. Prof. Amitabh Mattoo appreciated the fact that a son of soil had attained such great stature in the art world.

The style adopted by Suman Gupta for his artistic expression has variously been described as ‘Quasi Realism’ or ‘Magic Realism’. Realism is Suman’s forte but his paintings are not mere replication of nature. In fact his works have surrealistic characteristics that leave a lasting impact on the viewers. His works have a haunting and deeply meditative quality, that compels even an uninitiated viewer to reflect on the philosophical aspects of life. If one has to describe the paintings of Suman in a few words ‘tranquil’, ‘serene’, ‘calm’, ‘peaceful’ and ‘quiet’ would be the words that would readily come to one’s mind. No wonder, connoisseurs, not only in India but abroad too, love to have his paintings in their homes and all his works are mostly sold out on the very first day of his exhibition.

Suman has put 10 paintings in acrylic on canvas and 2 drawings on display in this exhibition. His work ‘One Story Song II’ has a minstrel with a Sargi, a folk form of Sarangi in his hand that has tiny bells attached to the bow. The singer is sitting against the trunk of the sacred Peepul tree, which has colourful prayer flags stuck on it. The expression on the face of the singer is one of trance. Another interesting work in the exhibition is titled ‘Sheaves’, which has a bunch of dry corns hanging against a mud wall while a balding villager with a forlorn expression on his face looks on. A thin arch of moon, as it looks on the Eid day, is visible in the background sky.

‘Two Sisters’ is another beautiful work of the collection that depicts two young girls standing amidst a vast grassland while a black cat sits quietly in the middle of the village pathway.

‘The Magic Flute’ is a work that is quite representative of the style of Suman Gupta. Tiger and the musician is a favorite theme of Suman. A minstrel sitting in a vast mountain meadow playing the flute while two tigers and a wild fowl, locally known as ‘Munnal’ sit quietly by his side. This is the Utopia of Suman’s dreams that repeats itself again and again in his works.

An unprecedentedly large number of people from all walks of life had gathered to witness the exhibition. Unfortunately, none of them will have the privilege of acquiring one of the paintings on display for two reasons. One is that these paintings are scheduled to be shown in an Exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi Gallery in New Delhi in the month of February and the second reason is that there are not many in Jammu who can afford to acquire a painting of Suman Gupta. His works are now prohibitively expensive and have, in recent times, been bought by the likes of Jaya Bachchan, Sunil Gavaskar, Tina Ambani, Raveena Tandon and Capt. Amrinder Singh and a number of collectors abroad. Hard luck folks.

NC stages protests demanding removal of two Ministers

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Jan 27: Scores of activists of opposition National Conference today took to streets demanding removal of two Ministers, belonging to PDP, from the Jammu and Kashmir’s coalition Government.

Shouting slogans, over 400 National Conference activists marched through the streets from party headquarters at Nawai-e-Subah complex to the residence of Divisional Co-mmissioner, Kashmir, at So-nawar and submitted a memorandum seeking removal of Fo-rest Minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal and Fin-ance Minister Tariq Hamid Qarra.

The NC protestors accused the Government of shielding the two Ministers who were allegedly involved in the Forest Scam and reportedly indicted by the Kundal Commission probe.

The Government last week tabled the Kundal Report in the State Assembly and expressed its readiness for a detailed discussion over it. However, the opposition party stalled the proceedings of the House demanding sacking of the Ministers first.

PDP defended the duo and accused the opposition of raising the bogey to mislead the people of the State and save its leaders allegedly involved in the Forest Scam.

Meanwhile, reports of peaceful protests held by the party workers were also received from all district headquarters of the Valley barring Ganderbal and Shopian.

The protests were organised by the National Conference local units and concluded peacefully, the sources said.

Qazi tries to divert attention from
Kundal Committee Report: Ch Ramzan

Excelsior Correspondent

Jammu, Jan 27: Claiming that the appointments made by him in the year 1996 were in no way illegal, Ex Forest Minister and NC leader Chowdhary Mohammad Ramzan today alleged that forest minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal was trying to divert the attention of people from publicized Kundal Committee report which has indicted him (Qazi) for the misappropriations, bungling and mismanagement in the department.

Addressing a press conference, here today, Ramzan alleged that the present Forest Minister Afzal was knee deep in corruption and should resign from the cabinet on moral grounds.

He said if there were some irregularities in the department then why no body even Mr Qazi himself did not point out any thing adverse before the Kundal report was made public.

"Now when Mr Qazi himself got trapped, he started leveling allegations against me to save his own skin", he added.

"The present Government has no policy for appointing qualified forest graduates and post graduates in forest department and time will come that there will be no officer in forest from state of Jammu and Kashmir and every senior level category will be filled by non-state subjects".

He said despite of having large quantity of timber available in the State, coalition Government opted for import that too of inferior quality from out side the sate. "The move of importing the timber form outside the state was clearly to benefit some persons".

Free coaching, financial assistance for
State's meritorious students

Excelsior Correspondent

Jammu, Jan 27: There is a good news for students with excellent academic background who have been dreaming of making it to the country's elite civil service but can not get proper coaching.

As a major boost to meritorious students of Jammu & Kashmir wanting to join the celebrated Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Government has come up with a special scheme for their coaching in New Delhi's reputed institutes. The scheme is part of the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad's policy to build capacity among Government employees and widen the opportunities for students to successfully compete at the national level.

The J&K Institute of Management, Public Admini-stration and Rural Development (IMPA), designated by the Government as the nodal agency to organise the coaching for the IAS Examinations, has invited applications from desirous students to be received at the twin offices of the Institute in Srinagar and Jammu till February 9, 2008.

Giving details of the scheme, the Director General, IMPA, Madhav Lal said here that the coaching programme would be of 6 months and held in two phases. The first phase of two month's coaching would be for the Preliminary Examination and the second phase of four months for the Main Examination, he said, adding that both phases would be held prior to the holding of the respective examinations.

Mr. Madhav Lal said that the eligibility criteria for the open merit candidates would be minimum 65% marks for commerce, science and engineering graduates, 60% for arts graduates and minimum 60% at graduation and 55% at post-graduate level for post-graduates in commerce, science and engineering subjects. The minimum percentage of marks for post-graduate candidates in arts subjects would be 55% at graduate and 50% at post-graduate level, he said.

The DG IMPA said that in case of candidates belonging to reserved categories of SC/ST and OBC, the minimum percentages would be uniformly 5% less than for the open merit candidates. He said only permanent residents of Jammu & Kashmir State who fulfill the age criteria prescribed for the examinations would be eligible to apply. He said the annual family income of the candidate from all sources should not be more than Rs. 2 lakhs.

Mr. Madhav Lal said that a committee has been constituted to select the candidates. The selection committee, headed by Director General IMPA, has Secretary, General Administr-ative Department and Secretary, ARI/Trainings Depar-tment as members and would co-opt experts from academic field as per requirement. He said at the time of selection, 60 points would be given to graduation, additional 15 to post-graduation and 25 to the interview. He said in the event of applications being three times more than the intake capacity of 20, the candidates would go through an objective type screening test of graduation standard to select 60 candidates on the basis of academic merit. These selected candidates would then be interviewed by the selection committee. He said the 20% selected candidates would be from SC/ST/OBC categories.

Mr. Madhav Lal said that the selected candidates would be sent for coaching to reputed institutes, preferably in Delhi. As incentive, coaching fees of the concerned institute would be reimbursed to the selected candidate in full subject to a maximum of Rs. 8,000 per month, besides providing a monthly stipend of Rs. 5,000 for the six months of coaching. A lump sum financial assistance of Rs. 10,000 would be also given to each selected candidate for purchase of books and periodicals. The selected candidates would be entitled to A-Class bus fare up to Jammu, to and fro, and 2nd Class AC to and fro rail fare from Jammu to New Delhi.

In case of the candidates who qualify the Preliminary Exam on their own, Mr. Madhav Lal said that they could also appear before the Selection Committee for coaching for the Main Exami-nation irrespective of the stipulated eligibility criteria. The annual family income criteria, however, he said, would remain. He said a maximum number of five such candidates would be selected for coaching in addition to the fixed intake capacity of 20. They would also be eligible for financial assistance as per the scheme, he added.
