Australia consolidate position, set to seal series

ADELAIDE, Jan 27: Australia today were set to clinch the Test series against India at the close of the penultimate day’s play in the fourth and final Test during which they took a small first innings lead and knocked off one Indian wicket in the second innings, leaving only two possible results — a likely draw or a defeat for the visitors.

Already 2-1 up in the hard-fought series, the home side more than matched India’s first innings big total of 526 by being all out for 563, a lead of 37 runs. India batted for just over an hour in the second innings during which they lost opener Irfan Pathan (0) before ending the day at 45 for one, a slender lead of eight runs.

The visitors will have to bat well in the final day’s play tomorrow to ensure a draw which would still leave the Aussies winners of the Gavaskar-Border trophy. Should India be bowled out cheaply, the home side could even win the Test.

Australia’s first innings response was built around Ricky Ponting’s first century in the series, a gritty 140, and a century by Michael Clarke (118) on top of the century by opener Matthew Hayden (103). Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, in his last Test innings, made a low 14 but was cheered lustily both by the Indian team and the spectators as he walked up to the wicket and back to the pavilion, marking an end to a great career.

The Indian bowlers toiled hard on a batsman-friendly wicket with Ishant Sharma, bowling consistently around 140 kmh, being the best taking 3-115 and his new ball partner Irfan Pathan also ended with three for 112. Part-time spinner Virender Sehwag bowled well for his two for 51 but Harbhajan Singh (1-128) and Anil Kumble (1-109) were disappointing.

Virender Sehwag (31) and Rahul Dravid (11) had managed to hang around and wipe out the lead till close.

Dravid batted cautiously but Sehwag couldn’t help but strike a six and a four off Andrew Symonds in the penultimate over of the day.

Ponting and Clarke alone didn’t hog the day’s spotlight, the specks of ray also felt in a little cameo by Adam Gilchrist as well as the 100th wicket of Pathan who managed the feat in his 28th Test.

Ponting, resuming on 79 in the team total of 322 for three, duly reached his century in the first session though there was an alarm when a miscued pull off Ishant Sharma just eluded Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The Australian skipper duly reached his 34th Test century with a single off Harbhajan Singh, fittingly since the latter was his tormentor throughout the series.

While Ponting took 114 balls for his first half century, his second took only 69 balls, before the back spasms necessitated a runner for him in the second session.

Ponting finally fell when he under-edged a ball on to his stumps from Virender Sehwag. He batted resolutely for 392 minutes and hit 10 fours from 266 balls.

His partner Clarke showed better form than his skipper and had a close call on 84 when he moved away to cut Virender Sehwag and edged it Dravid at first slip who could get his hands to it without quite getting his fingers around it.

The afternoon session, in many ways, belonged to Ishant Sharma, who tormented Australian batsmen with his pace, line and the ability to reverse swing his deliveries.

Sharma finally managed to get reward for his effort when Clarke edged a catch to second slip where VVS Laxman, diving to his right, picked up a brilliant catch. The middle order batsman faced 244 balls in 314 minutes and hit eight fours in his knock of 118 runs.

India claimed four wickets in the final session, including the brilliant spell of Ishant who troubled Andrew Symonds no ends up before the batsman under-edged a cut on to his stumps.

Gilchrist came in for a standing ovation and two sumptuous cuts, interspersed by a glorious straight drive which had umpire Billy Bowden rolling over in turf for cover, showed the wicketkeeper-batsman wanted to go out in a flourish.

However, his dash wasn’t to last long and he drove Pathan straight to Sehwag in covers. Everyone in the stadium rose on his feet to bid him good bye and the Indians too, on their part, formed a cluster to clap the great man till he disappeared in the stands.

Anand held, Negi clear second

WIJK AAN ZEE (The Netherlands) Jan 27: World champion Viswanathan Anand tried hard but eventually split the point with Dutchman Loek Van Wely in the 12th and penultimate round in group A of the Corus International Chess tournament here today.

GrandMaster Parimarjan Negi outplayed Efstratios Grivas of Greece to emerge as clear second in the group C. The Indian meets tournament leader Fabiano Caruana of Italy in the final round and a victory will propel him to a joint first finish.

Starting out with two losses, this has been an excellent recovery by Negi, who is the second youngest ever GrandMaster in the history of the game.

Meanwhile in the group A, GrandMaster Magnus Carlsen staked claim for the title again with a remarkable victory over former world champion and reigning world number one, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia.

Playing the black side of an English opening Carlsen capitalised on a calculation mistake by Kramnik and pulled the plug in the ensuing endgame.

Carlsen took his tally to 7.5 points and joined overnight leader Levon Aronian at the top of the tables after the latter played a quiet draw with Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine.

Anand is now a half point behind the two leaders along with Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan and a photo-finish seems well on cards in the first big tournament of the year.

In the ‘B’ group, being played simultaneously, GrandMaster P Harirkishna failed to break the ice against GM Michal Krasenkow of Poland and had to be satisfied with a draw.

Grandmaster Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia, meanwhile, almost assured himself of the top place with a clinical victory over Erwin L’Ami of Holland. (PTI)

Djokovic wins Australian Open for first Slam title

MELBOURNE, Jan 27: Tennis hot property Novak Djokovic broke through for his first Grand Slam triumph with a dramatic four-set victory over unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Australian Open today.

The 20-year-old third seed became the first Serb to win a tennis Grand Slam, coming from behind to register a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) victory over the tournament bolter in three hours six minutes.

Djokovic’s victory was the first Grand Slam final since the 2005 Australian Open not won by Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal with the top-ranked pair dominating the game, claiming the last 11 majors between them.

"I am so proud of myself and to be the first Serbian who won the Grand Slam title," said Djokovic, who eclipsed Jim Courier as the youngest men’s winner at Melbourne Park.

"I think it will be a crazy house back in Serbia in my country, I love you guys.

"I know the crowd wanted him to win but I don’t mind, no worries."

Djokovic and Tsonga rocked the established order by dumping Federer and Nadal out in the semi-finals to set up a decider unimaginable at the start of the tournament.

The Serb went on to claim his first major title in his 13th Grand Slam after losing to federer in last year’s US Open final and also reaching the semi-finals at the French Open and Wimbledon.

The victory stretched his winning streak to 11 matches, beating his previous best unbeaten run. Tsonga, bidding to become France’s first Grand Slam winner in 25 years, started well and took the only set off Djokovic in the tournament but could not go the distance with him.

"I thank Novak for a good fight and for me it was a good moment. I’ll be back," said Tsonga, who blasted Nadal out of the tournament in straight sets. (PTI)

Sania, Bhupathi falter at final hurdle

MELBOURNE, Jan 27: Unforced errors and poor serve cost Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi dearly as the Indian duo squandered numerous chances before surrendering the Australian Open mixed doubles title to fifth seeds Tiantian Sun and Nenad Zimonjic here today.

The unseeded Indian pair went down 6-7 (4) 4-6 to the Chinese-Serbian pair in the close to one and half hours contest.

Sania and Bhupathi only had themselves to blame for the loss as they were a break up at 4-3 in the first set before they allowed the fifth seeds to claw their way back into the match.

The unseeded pair broke Sun and Zimonjic once more in the engrossing opening set but their failure to hold their own serve stretched it to a tie breaker, where the fifth seeds came out trumps.

The Indians were especially weak in their second serve and a couple of double faults only compounded their woes in the 42-minute opener.

Having lost the first set closely, Sania and Bhupathi failed to bounce back in the second set, committing more double faults and unforced errors.

In contrast, Sun and Zimonjic were pumped up after going a set up and broke the Indians once besides holding their own serve without conceding a single break point.

To their credit, Sania and Bhupathi saved seven break points, including three match points. But it was all but over by that time as Sun and Zimonjic, serving for the match, romped home with ease.

Sania set to become Asian number one

After being the undisputed Indian number one for long, Sania Mirza is now all set to become Asia’s Numero Uno tennis star, overtaking Chinese ace Na Li in the WTA rankings.

The official list will be out only tomorrow, but Sania’s third-round appearance in the Australian Open has put her well on course for gaining three spots to 29th on the WTA charts. (PTI)

An Indian win still possible, insists Pathan

ADELAIDE, Jan 27: On a high after taking his 100th Test wicket, Indian seamer Irfan Pathan today insisted that the visitors still had a very strong chance of winning the ongoing fourth and final Test against Australia despite the match seemingly heading for a draw.

"Anything can happen on the last day if we can put some runs on the board. Australia has to bat last, there’s not a big change in the pitch but there would surely be more turn and we have world class spinners," an elated Pathan, who became only the seventh player ever to have 100 wickets and more than 1000 runs, said after the fourth day’s play.

Pathan termed the Adelaide Oval as the venue which brings happy tidings for him. He started his career here four years ago and his 100th Test wicket also came here.(PTI)

Afridi propels Pak to series triumph

MULTAN, Jan 27: Shahid Afridi hit a confident half century to lead Pakistan to a 37-run victory over Zimbabwe in the third limited-overs international today.

Hard-hitting Afridi smashed 85 off 52 balls, including a record-equaling 245th six, as Pakistan restricted Zimbabwe to 235 for seven after scoring a formidable total of 272-9 of its 50 overs.

With the win, Pakistan takes an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Sean Williams (71) and Brendon Taylor (55) shared 105-run fourth wicket stand off 131 balls to give Zimbabwe some hope for a win, before both departed in the space of nine deliveries.

Elton Chigumbura remained unbeaten on 42 off 44 balls while Gary Brent was not out on 13 at the close of play. (PTI)

We want to win it for Gilchrist: Clarke

ADELAIDE, Jan 27: Australia would do everything tomorrow to win the final Test against India as a tribute to its retiring hero Adam Gilchrist, said centurion Michael Clarke.

With just one day left, it would require an extraordinary effort to force a result in the match but Clarke said the side would do everything to win it for the outgoing wicketkeeper.

"I think it’s an ammunition for Gilly to go out with a win. He’s been an amazing part of the Australian team and we would like to win this last Test for him," said Clarke who struck 118 and forged a record 210-run fourth wicket stand with his skipper Ricky Ponting, also a centurion.

"He is a fantastic player and deserves all the respect he is getting now," he said. (Agecies)

Gavaskar ready to reply if ICC seeks explanation

ADELAIDE, Jan 27: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar will defend himself personally if the International Cricket Council (ICC) executive board asks him to explain his pointed attack on match referee Mike Procter.

According to media reports here, Gavaskar has been asked to explain the outburst in the executive board meeting in march.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed and cricket manager Dave Richardson have also reportedly spoken to Gavaskar on the matter.

In a newspaper column a few days ago, Gavaskar had questioned Procter’s decision to impose a three-Test ban on Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh for racist abuse in the controversial Sydney Test.

Gavaskar had said that Indian fans, and not he, wanted to know why Procter took a white man’s word over a brown man’s testimony during the hearing.

Procter upheld Andrew Symonds’ claim, backed up by two of his team-mates, that Harbhajan had called him a "monkey" even as the Indian’s batting partner, the venerable Sachin Tendulkar, contradicted the host side’s claim.

Gavaskar has been under attack ever since here but the former captain insisted that he merely wrote what innumerable callers were trying to find out from him.

"At no stage, have I called anyone a racist. I wrote about what cricket fans had been wanting to know. It wasn’t necessarily my viewpoint on the issue," he insisted. (PTI)
