Godrej Consumer to acquire South African hair brand MUMBAI, Jan 22: FMCG major Godrej Consumer Products today said it will acquire the South African hair brand 'Kinky'. Godrej Consumer Products today signed an agreement to acquire the 'Kinky' hair business in South Africa, which is a self created premium brand and the trademark is registered in several countries of the world, the company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange. "This acquisition enables us expand into a new line of business and diversify our hair product portfolio. The acquisition of a reputed brand like Kinky will enable us to strengthen our portfolio of product offerings in South Africa," Godrej Consumer Products Chairman and Managing Director Adi Godrej said. "This acquisition is our fourth and considerably enhances our scale and size as an Indian FMCG player in the International arena. We are excited about the opportunities, this transaction offers," he added. Over 100 Indian software and services companies are participating in the eighth edition of global IT fair, which is organised by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). The event is sponsored by Union Commerce and Industry Ministry and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. "Indiasoft 2008 is meant to facilitate joint ventures, collaboration and strategic alliances for outsourcing with overseas buyers," ESC Chairman Sanjiv Narayan said. Council executive director D K Sareen said the proposed programme will be an effective forum for the participants to assess the outsourcing needs of global buyers who would be visiting the event. "The event will provide an opportunity to broaden their vision and tap the emerging global markets," he added. (PTI) No human habitation on Niyamgiri Hills: Vedanta LANJIGARH, ORISSA, Jan 22: Vendata Aluminium has begun trial run of its one-MT alumina plant here and sought the Supreme Court's nod to mine bauxite on Niyamgiri hills through joint venture between Sterlite Industries and Orissa Mining Corporation. Denying that bauxite mining would cause environmental threat to Niyamgiri hills as is being alleged by certain NGOs, Vedanta Group Head for Business Development C V Krishnan said forest cover generally improves after bauxite mining due to reclamation and compensatory afforestation. He said there is no habitation in the proposed bauxite mining lease area at Niyamgiri, and hence, no question of displacement arises. Moreover, Krishnan added, the water resources would improve as confirmed by Central Mine Planning and Design Institute, Ranchi. "We have successfully rehabilitated all 118 families who were displaced in the refinery area and all basic amenities have been provided to those people. As far as mining area is concerned, there is no human habitation. Therefore, there is no question of any person being displaced. "All information that is being spread is incorrect and not in tune with ground realities," Krishnan said. Working on the social development in the Lanjigarh and Kalahandi district, the company has already spent Rs 20 crore from year 2004 onwards and has committed Rs 4-5 crore every year for CSR activities. A total of 118 families from seven villages residing near the Niyamgiri hills have been rehabilitated. These villages are Kinari, Borbhata, Kothduar, Sindhbahal, Narayanpur, Kasibadi, Rengopali, he said. (PTI) |

Selected well made Nilgiri Orthodox Leaf ruled firm, while other grades quoted lower by Rs 2-Rs 3 per kg. With improved demand from all sections, good liquoring CTC leaf teas were firm to occasionally dearer by Rs 1, especially smaller broken and fannings, while medium plainer bolder grades met with improved export demand and were dearer by Rs 2-Rs 3, the source said. Of the total offerings of 4.67 lakh kg , Dust variety comprised of 3.20 lakh kg, the source added. In the Dust category, Orthodox teas received less enquiry and were sold barely steady, the high priced liquoring CTC ruled lower by Rs 2 -Rs 3 and medium types by a rupee. Orthodox High Grown Brokens quoted at Rs 65-Rs 76, good CTC brokens Rs 52-Rs 59, Fannings Rs 53-Rs 58, Medium Brokens Rs 48-Rs 55 and Fannings Rs 50-Rs 54 per kg. Best CTC Dust ruled at Rs 60-Rs 65, Good Rs 53-Rs 59, Medium Rs 47-Rs 52 and Medium Orthodox at Rs 34-Rs 46. "By 2012, we plan to have 100 overseas offices," Anil K Khandelwal, Chairman & Managing Director, who is is in the UAE to unveil several new initiatives told reporters. He said the Gulf region "is a very important" part of banks plans for overseas expansion. "The UAE operations are our top priority since they are most profitable," he said, adding Dubai offers the conducive climate for banking since it is a business hub and is hosting many mega projects in tourism and infrastructure. "We are also looking at Kuwait and Saudi Arabian market," Khandelwal said, adding in Bahrain the bank received a full-fledged licence to open in March. The bank is also looking at starting Qatar operations. BOB is only the sixth Indian bank to have full banking operations in the UAE with six branches . It also has full-fledged operations in Oman. BoB has 2,800 branches in India and has 66 offices abroad in 24 countries, the highest for an Indian bank. "This year (Upto March 08 fiscal) we will open 10 branches abroad. In Ghana we will open next month as well as open ninth office in London and have new offices in Uganda and Kenya. In 2009, the bank will open in New Zealand, Canada and Mozambique." About the about focus on retail banking and SMEs, he said the initiatives are part of a new paradigm of customer services." Nowadays competition is not on interest rates, but more on speed, he said. Khandelwal said the bank will soon launch Internet banking in Dubai and also enter the credit cards business. "We are in talks with Visa for starting the operations," he said. He said the bank firmly moved towards implementation of "Multi-Specialist Banking", rolled out new Business Models for Wholesale, Retail and SME Segments; set-up a chain of 13 Retail and 16 SME Loan Factories across the country; launched many new deposit and loan products, and added over 2.2 million to the global customer base. The bank today has over 29 million customers around the globe. "Our International operations have always been a key comparative advantage to the Bank. Overseas business grew by as high as 72 per cent," he said. In the UAE, Khandelwal opened the first Electronic Banking Service Unit (EBSU) of Bank of Baroda. Ashok Gupta, Chief Executive (GCC Operations), said that customers will no longer be required to come all the way to Dubai to carry out banking transactions as practically all the day-to-day banking services will be extended by the EBSU. Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools to get Computer Labs MUMBAI, Jan 22: In an effort to give level playing field to the students of rural areas, the state government has decided to give the Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools well-equipped Computer Labs so that they can compete with private schools. The idea of giving computer labs is to make the students of secondary and higher secondary computer literate in the state. The computer lab will be equipped with 10 computers, internet, projecter, educational software, printer, scanner and a trainer. "We have taken a decision to boost computer education in the rural schools", school education secretary Sharvari Patankar said. When asked about the details she said they are to be worked out. The Government is trying to cover 500 Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools under the first phase. Well eqipped Computer Lab can provide ample of oppurtunities to students in rural areas who have access to computers and technical knowledge, said an official from education department. "Most of the schools we have identified are from backward region, which can narrow the gap between rural and urban schools," said secondary school education director Dharkar. The main object of the project is to provide entry to rural students in the formal system. The state has sanctioned Rs five crore for 500 schools in initial stage, he said. Rural schools do not get computer trainers or computer teachers. So the project will run on the BOOT (Build Own Operate and Transfer) system for five years. The professional companies are invited to start this project. Their main responsibility is technical support, teaching students and maintaining the lab. They will be giving training to teachers also. "We have invited bids from professional companies who can start the lab and teach students", said Dharkar. The Government is trying to start the project from this year, he added. (PTI) |
