No human habitation on Niyamgiri Hills: Vedanta

LANJIGARH, ORISSA, Jan 22: Vendata Aluminium has begun trial run of its one-MT alumina plant here and sought the Supreme Court's nod to mine bauxite on Niyamgiri hills through joint venture between Sterlite Industries and Orissa Mining Corporation.

Denying that bauxite mining would cause environmental threat to Niyamgiri hills as is being alleged by certain NGOs, Vedanta Group Head for Business Development C V Krishnan said forest cover generally improves after bauxite mining due to reclamation and compensatory afforestation.

He said there is no habitation in the proposed bauxite mining lease area at Niyamgiri, and hence, no question of displacement arises. Moreover, Krishnan added, the water resources would improve as confirmed by Central Mine Planning and Design Institute, Ranchi.

"We have successfully rehabilitated all 118 families who were displaced in the refinery area and all basic amenities have been provided to those people. As far as mining area is concerned, there is no human habitation. Therefore, there is no question of any person being displaced.

"All information that is being spread is incorrect and not in tune with ground realities," Krishnan said.

Working on the social development in the Lanjigarh and Kalahandi district, the company has already spent Rs 20 crore from year 2004 onwards and has committed Rs 4-5 crore every year for CSR activities.

A total of 118 families from seven villages residing near the Niyamgiri hills have been rehabilitated. These villages are Kinari, Borbhata, Kothduar, Sindhbahal, Narayanpur, Kasibadi, Rengopali, he said. (PTI)

Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools to get Computer Labs

MUMBAI, Jan 22: In an effort to give level playing field to the students of rural areas, the state government has decided to give the Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools well-equipped Computer Labs so that they can compete with private schools.

The idea of giving computer labs is to make the students of secondary and higher secondary computer literate in the state.

The computer lab will be equipped with 10 computers, internet, projecter, educational software, printer, scanner and a trainer.

"We have taken a decision to boost computer education in the rural schools", school education secretary Sharvari Patankar said.

When asked about the details she said they are to be worked out.

The Government is trying to cover 500 Zila Parishad and Tehsil schools under the first phase. Well eqipped Computer Lab can provide ample of oppurtunities to students in rural areas who have access to computers and technical knowledge, said an official from education department.

"Most of the schools we have identified are from backward region, which can narrow the gap between rural and urban schools," said secondary school education director Dharkar.

The main object of the project is to provide entry to rural students in the formal system.

The state has sanctioned Rs five crore for 500 schools in initial stage, he said.

Rural schools do not get computer trainers or computer teachers. So the project will run on the BOOT (Build Own Operate and Transfer) system for five years.

The professional companies are invited to start this project. Their main responsibility is technical support, teaching students and maintaining the lab. They will be giving training to teachers also.

"We have invited bids from professional companies who can start the lab and teach students", said Dharkar.

Buy a car and get its ‘puja’ done for free........

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: Buying a new car? What about going to a dealer who along with freebies, offers a free ‘puja’ for the car with a priest in attendance?

As Indian priests hop from household to household performing ‘pujas’ in the capital, they now have a new job opening, performing quick puja for the customers at showrooms before they drive away with the four-wheeler.

Aware of the fact that in a country like India where most of the Hindu acts are followed by a mark of religiosity, many dealers have now started to provide the grand-old service of performing customary rituals and ceremonies right at the car showrooms.

Raman Gupta who is a manager (Operations) in a leading IT company, recently bought a new Maruti from a car dealer in the capital. Like many middle-class Indians, he also believes in starting any new work after performing some rituals.

Just as he was about to leave for a Hanuman mandir in the nearby area, a person from the showroom approached him and introduced himself as Pandit Radhamohan Tyagi, a priest deployed by the outlet manager for carrying out the "customary rituals and ceremony" for the occasion.

"We are here for your convenience sir. Don’t worry I will take care of your feelings," remarked the priest. In just 15 minutes, he along with his disciple performed all the rituals from coconut-breaking and ‘swastik’ smearing to ‘aarti’ and all.

"I am really delighted at the service being offered by the company at no extra cost", says wife of Raman, Seema Gupta.

Panditji is happy too."We perform every ritual as per the demand of customer and get paid by the company", he says.

Regarding the change in his traditional way of working, he says " the car dealers have started offering some specific services to its customers in order to attract extra-smile on their face. So, they have started arranging puja (blessing) ceremonies, where a Hindu priest blesses a car for good luck".

"The showrooms also sell accessories, including small statues of Hindu Gods to place on dashboards", he adds. "Drive with auspicious omen on your side," displays a signboard next to a mini-Ganesha idol.

"Moreover, we get handsomely paid by the owners of the showroom as against the low income from being at temples and homes. So, I have adopted to work for them", he says.

India is one of the world’s fastest growing car markets. Sales are growing at the rate of 15 per cent a year, with volumes due to rise from 1.3 million to 2.1 million by 2010, according to Frost & Sullivan, a consultancy.

As such the manufacturers are focusing to develop an intimate bond with each customer by providing these services.

Another priest, Krishnamurari Jha , employed at a leading car showroom, says "with the rise in incomes and strong economic growth, average Indians are spending more and buying cars. This augurs well for us as more and more priests would be hired by the dealers in the coming days".

In a country where the first-time buyers account for at least 35 per cent of sales, the proposition is seen as extra hand-holding of the customers and a step forward in holding customer satisfaction.

"Nowadays customers want all services available at a ‘single-stop’. Thanks to their sophistication that we are in demand", adds Jha. (PTI)

Centre to review safety of tourists with State Govts on Jan 24

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: Alarmed over a spate of incidents of harassment of women tourists from abroad that threaten to rob the sheen of high-profile ‘Incredible India’ campaign, the government has convened a high-level meeting of state tourism secretaries here on January 24 to chalk out measures to deal with the menace.

A communication in this regard has already been sent to all Chief Secretaries of the State and Union Territory Governments by Tourism Secretary S Banerjee.

The meeting has been called by the Union Tourism Ministry to review tourism projects and related issues.

"It has now been decided that safety and security of the tourists would be one of the main topics on the agenda," a ministry official said.

In his letter to the Chief Secretaries, Mr Banerjee referred to recent media reports of harassment of women tourists and reminded the State Governments about the concerns of the Centre on the safety and security of the foreign as well as domestic tourists.

He said the Centre had advised in the past about the need for deployment of Tourist Police at the places of tourist importance, but rued the fact that only ten states had acted on the recommendation.

Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni says the incidents of harassment of women tourists have been ‘unfortunate’, but it would be wrong to project India as an unsafe tourist destination.

"Last year five million tourists had visited India. On the basis of a few incidents, which have to be deplored and dealt with sternly, it will not be right to say that India has become unsafe for women tourists from abroad," she argues.

However, the horror for foreign tourists appears to be unending. On January 7, a young Russian tourist was allegedly molested by a beach shack owner on Utorda beach in south Goa.

Over the past few weeks, two cases of molestation have been reported from Kerala and two from Rajasthan. But the most horrific was molestation of two young NRI women by a mob of over 70 men in Mumbai on New Year’s day.

In Kerala, two minor girls from Canada were molested by a security guard of a hotel in Kumarakom. A British journalist was allegedly raped by the owner of a guest house in Udaipur while an American tourist was molested by the priest of a temple in Pushkar.

Last year also, there were a number of unnerving incidents for foreign tourists. On September 19, two Japanese tourists were raped in Agra; a South Korean tourist claimed she was raped near Manali in Himachal Pradesh in March.

In March 2006, Bitti Mohanti, son of former Orissa DGP B B Mohanty, was found guilty of raping a German researcher in Alwar in Rajasthan while a Japanese woman was raped and robbed by four men in Pushkar in April.

The Tourism Ministry is apparently rattled by all these incidents. It is also perturbed over the fact that several countries, including the US, England, Australia, Canada and France, have issued travel advisories on the law and order situation to their citizens planning to visit India.

In partticular, they have warned women tourists about the possibility of physical harassment and molestation in places like Delhi, Goa, Agra and Himachal Pradesh.

It is not only the Tourism Ministry which is worried, but also the tourism industry that is feeling the heat of it. The number of foreign tourists visiting India has been burgeoning steadily. So has foreign exchange earnings, which were pegged at 6500 million dollars last year.

Tourism industry is already reeling under the falling rate of dollar. Incidents of harassment of women tourists will further compound their problem. (UNI)

Satyam to become 1st Indian company to list on Euronext, NYSE, NSE

NEW DELHI, Jan 22: Satyam Computer Services Ltd today announced

its intention to list its American Depository Shares (ADS) on

Euronext in Amsterdam, which will make it the first Indian Company

to list on three major exchanges around the world- Euronext, New

York Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange.

The announcement was made by Satyam chairman Ramalinga Raju at the first-ever opening bell-ringing ceremony of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) here.

"It is indeed an honour to be the very first Company to ring the opening bell at the NSE and to inaugurate this prestigious way of being recognized as a leading Company. The fact that this event also commemorates our imminent listing on Euronext makes it even more prestigious for us," Mr Raju said.

A Euronext listing is a significant and exciting move for the Company, reinforcing our position as a global organisation. Europe is a dynamic and growing market for Satyam and our listing will demonstrate our continued and growing commitment to the region, he added.

Satyam will also be the first Company to list its existing ADSs on Euronext using the exchange’s Fast Path application, a means of expediting the cross-listing of non-European Union-based Companies that are already listed on the NYSE.

This initiative provides Satyam the means to directly access a larger pool of capital, and gives investors across the EU the opportunity to directly invest in Satyam through a local exchange.

The NYSE, Euronext and NSE are affiliated entities. Upon listing on Euronext, Satyam establishes its association with all three exchanges under one group, and strengthens its presence in three important markets.

"Listing with Euronext will provide numerous benefits to the exchange’s customers, and to Satyam’s investors. In addition to making investing in Satyam easier, it enables extended trading. That is, investors can purchase stock on Euronext and sell it on the NYSE the same day," Mr Raju said.
