JAMMU, Jan 12: Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) S. K. Sinha today said that a state of Art, Medical Care Cancer Institution of excellence is likely to become operational at a cost of 100 crore at Kakriyal near Katra this year.

Speaking at the function held to commemorate the 145th birth anniversary of Shri Vivekananda at the Shri Vivekananda Medical Mission Ambphala this morning, the Governor said that the facility is being set up by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Board as a part of its social responsibility programme.

The Governor said that the first phase of the cancer institution is fast coming up adjacent to yet another flagship of the Shrine Board, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University in the foot steps of Trikuta hills. He said institution will have latest equipment and diagnostic facilities at an affordable fee and even free of cost to needy and poor patients.

General Sinha expressed happiness over the expansion of Shri Vivekananda Hospital and said it will be befitting tribute to a visionary, who believe in the philosophy of service of man-kind is the service of God. He recalled the contribution of Vivekananda in the renaissance of Indian philosophy and made a mark during his speech at parliament of world religion in Chicago. He said that Swami Vivekananda inculcated a sense of self esteem among the compatriots and worked for social justice at a time when vested interests were exploiting masses in the name of religion. Governor said the great saint worked all through his life for emancipating the society and bringing a glory to the nation.

Paying tributes to the visionary, Minister for Health and Medical Education Mangat Ram Sharma said that Vivekananda was a guiding source for the youth of the country to tread the path of righteous and truth. He hailed contributes of Vivekananda Mission in supplementing health care facility in Jammu.

The Minister said that a highly specialized health care facility is coming up on the pattern of All India Institute of Medical Science AIIMS at Jammu which will go a long way in meeting the requirement of the ailing people of this region.

Earlier, the Governor laid foundation stone of the second phase of the Mission Hospital and went round its newly setup dental section.

Former Union Minister for Defence, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta read out a report on the status, aims and objectives of the hospital.

JAMMU, Jan 12: As part of Sadhbhavana programme, Poli-ce has organized Wattan-Ki-Sair, an all India tour for the students of militancy hit, remote and inaccessible areas of the State, which was flagged off by the Vigilance Commissioner, Dr. Ashok Bhan at an impressive function held at Police Sports Stadium, Gulshan Ground here this morning.

While interacting with the students on the occasion, Dr. Bhan said that the men in Khaki are the best friends of people. He said the aim of organizing such tours particularly for poor students of far-flung and remote areas of the State is to enable them to see historical places, development activities and rich ethos across the country. He said it is the endeavour of Jammu and Kashmir Police to give boost to the students hailing from remote areas of the State. He advised them to go and enjoy the tour, enrich their knowledge and improve education for a bright future. Many of the students stated that they have for the first time visited even Jammu city and thanked the police for organizing the tour.

The group of 75 students is accompanied by 4 officers, 6 teachers, 2 para-medical staff members. As many as 15 students are drawn from Anantnag, 10 from Pulwama, 13 Baramulla, 12 Kupwara, 20 Ramban and 5 from Doda and Kishtwar districts.

Earlier, the Inspector General of Police Armed, Sheikh Owais Ahmed briefed the Vigilance Commissioner about tour programme. He said during the 10-day tour, the students would visit Agra, Taj Mahal, Delhi, Jaipur and other historical places of the country.

Among others, the function was attended by Inspectors General of Police, S. K. Mishra, S. Gopal Reddy, Navin Agarwal and A. K. Gupta, Deputy Insp-ectors General of Police, Rav-inder Kotwal, Muneer Ahmed Khan and Abdul Qayoom Man-has, AIG (T&I), Rajesh Kumar, Commandant Rafiq-ul-Hassan and other senior police officers.

Army constructs co-education hostel

LEH, Jan 12: Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh Chering Dorje today dedicated a three storey co-education hostel building to the people of the district.

The building was constructed by the Army under Operation Sadbavana at the cost of Rs 39.50 lakh.

GOC 14 Corps Lt Gen P C Bhardwaj, Executive Councillor Education Tsering Norboo Lampa, Executive Councillor Tourism Tsewang Rigzin, Councillors and Deputy Commissioner Leh Dr M K Bhandari were among others present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Dorje said that since the inception of Operation Sadbavana in Ladakh in 2000, the Army has initiated a drive in helping civilian population by introducing a number of people-friendly schemes.

He said that the co-education hostel having facility to accommodate 120 students would go a long way in providing boarding and lodging facilities to the students of such areas.

Director Sadbavana said that the hostel has been completed in a record time under the close supervision of GOC 14 Corps Lt Gen P C Bhardwaj and added that building will accommodate as much as 70 girl students and 50 boy students.

JAMMU, Jan 12: Governor Lt. Gen.(Retd) S.K.Sinha and Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today greeted the people of the State on the auspicious occasion of Lohri.

In a message, the Governor said the festival symbolizes onset of spring after a spell of chilly winter and hoped that the auspicious occasion will be celebrated with fervour and gaiety in true sprit of composite culture. He said the best way of celebrating festival is to share each others joy and bring cheer on the faces of all. The Governor prayed for peace and tranquility in the State.

In a message of felicitations, the Chief Minister said that the festivals are an important component of our composite cultural heritage and secular traditions. He hoped that these occasions would help in further strengthening communal harmony, amity, brotherhood and secular ethos.

Wishing a happy Lohri and Makar Sankranti to people, Azad prayed for peace and prosperity of the State.

2 killed in accidents, youth electrocuted

JAMMU, Jan 12: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents while as a youth was electrocuted.

Police spokesman said that one motorcyclist was killed and another received severe injuries when a bus number JK02G-3646 hit two motorcycles at Dhleari under the jurisdiction of Khour Police Station.

Both were immediately rushed to Government Medical College Hospital where one of them was pronounced as brought dead. The deceased has been identified as Raj Kumar, son of Loffa Ram of Gigarwal.

The injured motorcyclist has been identified as Rakesh Kumar, son of Manga Ram of Kharah.

Meanwhile, one Sant Ram, son of Dhanu Ram of Batote, who was admitted in Government Medical College Hospital on January 4, 2008 after sustaining injuries in a road accident at Tringala, succumbed to injuries today.

The spokesman said that one Ajay Kumar, son of Romesh Kumar of Patayala Chak was electrocuted when he touched over head high tension wire while sitting on the roof top of mini-bus number JK02F-6395.

Police has taken cognizance of the incident.

Ration supply stopped under MLA’s pressure
Consider enquiry report for restoring supply: HC

JAMMU, Jan 12: In a petition seeking uninterrupted supply of ration which was stopped by the Department under the pressure of concerned MLA, Justice Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain of State High Court today directed respondents that they shall consider the enquiry report for restoring supply of ration to the petitioner.

The Court also issued notice to State through Commis-sioner/Secretary Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department, Director CAPD, MLA Abdul Majid Wani, Joint Director (Administration) CAPD, Assistant Director CAPD Doda and private respondent Javid Iqbal with the direction to registry to list the case on February 5, 2008.

The petition was filed by Samus-ud-Din Wani, dealer for ration supply in Behota (Marmat), who was appointed ration dealer by the competent authority for Panchayat Behota (Marmat) in the year 1978.

During the course of argument, Advocate A M Malik, appearing for the petitioner, submitted "Javid Iqbal, who is blue eyed person of local MLA Abdul Majid Wani, had managed to stop the ration supply to the petitioner".

He prayed before the Court for issuance of direction to the respondents to restore the ration supply to the petitioner based upon de-novo enquiry conducted by Assistant Director CAPD Doda whereby the respondent has proposed to restore back the supply of ration to the petitioner for Behota (Marmat).

After hearing the counsel for the petitioner, the Court directed the respondents that they shall consider the enquiry report for restoring supply of ration to the petitioner.

3 KP organizations to observe Holocaust Day jointly

JAMMU, Jan 12: In order to foster the unity among the community, three organizations of Kashmiri Pandits, All State Kashmiri Pandits Conference (ASKPC), Panun Kashmir Movement (PKM) and All India Kashmiri Pandit Conference (AIKPC), which have formed a United Front recently, today announced to observe this year’s Holocaust Day falling on January 19, jointly.

This was stated at a joint press conference by H L Chatta, general secretary ASKPC, Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo, president PKM, M K Raina general secretary , AIKPC, R K Raina, senior vice president, ASKPC and Prof. H L Jalali, vice president, PKM here, this afternoon.

They said a rally will be taken out from Rajinder Park which will culminate at Raj Bhawan on that day.

The Forum has asked both the Central and State Governments to take immediate measures to improve the present socio-economic conditions of the displaced people instead of giving hollow assurances.

They demanded a special package for the unemployed youth of the community, release of monetary benefits to the bifurcated ration card holders, immediate shifting of Battal Ballian Camp inmates to Jammu, Enhancement of Relief to Rs 6000 per month, shifting of other camp inmates to newly constructed quarters, payment of scholarships and stipends to the displaced students and accommodation facilities for the displaced persons living outside the camps.

Criticizing the Government, Mr Chrungoo said that it has not given positive response to the demands of the community youth who are on hunger strike over a month now. On future course of action by the youth he said, "we will give our opinion after the leadership of youth which has launched the chain hunger strike approaches us,".

Reiterating the demand of reorganization of State, Mr Chrungoo said, the Pandits are committed to homeland and it will be only solution to their problems.

Mr Chatta demanded that no special status be given to any religious place and all be brought under the purview of the proposed Kashmir Hindu Shrines Act. He also lambasted the Finance Minister, Tariq Hamid Qarra for his recent statement regarding separate currency.

 

Man held for wife’s murder

KATHUA, Jan 12: With the arrest of a person, the police claimed to have solved the blind murder of a young house-wife at village Malhar in Billawar today.

A police spokesman said that body of young Rekha, wife of Ramesh Chander, resident of Malhar was found hanging to a tree away from her in-law’s house on January 5, 2008. Her father-in-law had lodged a missing report on January 4 with the police.

After the body was found, the police shifted it to Billawar hospital for post-mortem. Later, a special police team headed by DSP Basohli and SHO Billawar and SHO Malhar started investigation. Victim’s husband Ramesh Chander is a Matador driver in Jammu. He used to visit village after a month or two.

The wife was insisting to stay with him in Jammu while husband was opposing. There was quarrel between them over this issue many times. Girl’s parents also gave statement that she was beaten up by husband over this issue many times and even she was tortured on January 4 and let husband’s house to meet them. But she was not allowed to come and meet.

After sustained interrogation, Chander broke down today and narrated the whole story. He confessed that he killed his wife and then hanged her body to a tree to give it a twist as a case of suicide. The post-mortem had cleared that she was tortured before death. Husband was arrested and a case under Section 302 RPC was registered against him.

145th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda celebrated

JAMMU, Jan 12 : Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mangat Ram Sharma has said that best tribute to Swami Vivekananda into follow his teachings for strengthening the nation and upholding its secular character.

Addressing at a function organized by Vivekananda Kendra Jammu to celebrate his 145th birth anniversary here today, the Health Minister said Swami ji always stood for truth and welfare of poor, adding that this great saint showed the right path for strengthening the bonds of love and amity. He said great Swami ji always thought about a great nation full of love, sincerity, good motives, truth and purity.

He exhorted upon the youth to join the great saints mission in large scale to make his dream a reality. He also called opon them to acquaint themselves with moral and religious education besides bringing excellence in academics.

Mr. Sharma appreciated the work being done by the Jammu chapter of Swami Vivekananda Mission for strengthening communal harmony, tranquility and brotherhood in the State and assured all possible help in this endeavor from the Government. He stressed upon the functionaries of the organization to work with dedication for the upliftment of the poor to realize the dream of Swami Vivekananda for making India a strong nation.

Joint Director Information S. K. Sharma in his address threw light on the life and teachings of Swami ji and said "if we follow the path shown by this great saint we succeed on all fronts". He stressed upon the members to spread the message and teachings of Swami ji among the masses to bring spiritual awakening as envisaged by this great saint.

Mr. Sanhotra Vibhag Pramuk of North states, Additional SP Jammu city Shakti Pathak and other dignitaries also spoke on the occasion and expressed their views about the teachings and workings of great saint. They said it was the need of hour to follow the path shown by him for making India state.

On the occasion, a debate competition was held on significance of, "Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in present day context" in which 10 educational institutions participated. Kanika Chauhan of Oriental Academy was adjudged as first,Regzin of DBN as 2nd and Shweta Sharma of Vimal Public School as 3rd.

Earlier, a Shoba Yatra comprising of contingents of youth and prominent citizens was also passed through various markets of the city and culminated at Nekchand Memorial Hall Rani Talab.

Meanwhile, Pradesh Congress Seva Dal under the chairmanship of Balvinder Singh Sambyal organized a function to celebrate birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand at a function at Bari Brahmana.

Speaking on the occasion Balvinder Singh Sambyal exhorted the youth to follow the path as shown by Swami Vivekanand. He said the youth should abstain from drugs, wine, tobacco and become a total vegetarian and also adopt way of life with truthfulness, Godliness and remain struck to total humanity. He said educated youth should spare some time for making the society literate.

Other prominent seva Dal leaders who spoke included Anil Sharma, S S Jamwal, S Harinder Singh, Yudhvir Singh, Munish Gupta, Vipin Nischil, Hardev Singh Billoria, Junir Anil Sharma, Babbal, Prempal Sharma, Capt Uttam Chand Sharma, Rakesh Gupta, Col Sham Singh and Ramesh Badyal.

Bill aimed at grabbing Shiv Khori shrine’s land: Mahant

JAMMU, Jan 12: Strongly condemning the Government for introducing Shiv Khori Shrine Bill in the Legislative Assembly, Mahant Omkar Giri of Shiv Khori Muth Sanghar said that the Bill was aimed at grabbing the land, property and temple with the ulterior motives.

"Shiv Khori Muth is in existence since time immemorial and the administration of the Muth is governed by the Mahants of "Zoona Akhara" Marhee 13 Girinaamaa of Dashnaam and the Government has no right to take control of such a shrine", he said,

Mahant Omkar Giri alleged that MLA Reasi Jugal Kishore Sharma has an eye on the income and property of the Shiv Khori Shrine and has purchased big chunk of land of shrine on the name of Benami associates by managing wrong entries in the revenue record with the connivance of revenue officers.

He said that Government has no right to grab the land of the Muth donated by the people of the local areas to the Gupha Shiv Khori Muth. "The act of Government amounts to the infringement of fundamental and legal rights as well as hurts the sentiments of local people and entire Hindu community and Sadhu Samaj", he added.

Mahant Omkar Giri urged upon the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to withdraw the bill which got framed and introduced at the behest of Jugal Kishore Sharma.

Workshop on "Better Policing in J&K" at JU

JAMMU, Jan 12: The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) and Yakjah Reconciliation and Development Network in collaboration with ‘The Law School’, University of Jammu (JU) organized a workshop on the topic "Towards Better Policing in Jammu and Kashmir" in university here today.

The workshop was inaugurated by Director SKPA, IGP Ram Lubhaya. Secretary State Women Commission, Hafiza Mazaffar and Additional Advocate General, Seema Khajuria were also present during the inaugural session of the workshop.

While speaking during the workshop, IGP emphasized over the importance of better policing and said, " State police is also working towards the modernization and steps are being taken towards this, as it has become necessary to bring reforms to keep pace with the changing time and needs of people".

Meanwhile, Hafeeza Muzaffar and Seema Khajuria emphasized upon the need to bring the reforms in policing with an immediate effect, as it was the need of the hour to make it more people friendly.

Pushkar Raj from CHRI also spoke and detailed about the directives of Supreme Court on police reforms. He apprised that only few selective States brought about police reforms, but the State was lagging far behind in this aspect.

Earlier, Prof V K Kapoor, Director ‘The Law School’ presented the welcome address and introduced the topic of the workshop. SSP Rajesh Kumar, Advocate D C Raina, CBI Inspector Kamal Sangra, Ranjit Kalra and Ashima Koul from Yakjah also took part in the workshop and presented their thoughts on the topic. The arrangements were made by Shah Nawaz Choudhary.

Hurriyat must participate in elections: Bhim

JAMMU, Jan 12: National Panthers Party chairman Prof Bhim Singh has said that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should show some courage to announce conduct of free and fair elections under Governor’s rule in the Jammu and Kashmir State.

Addressing a press conference here today, Prof Singh said that Hurriyat and other Kashmiri leaders like Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah should come forward to contest next Assembly elections. The NPP leader said that he met with some Kashmiri leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and talked to them on the issue. He said referendum issue has been left behind. NC is for autonomy and accepts accession of J&K with the Union of India. PDP stands nowhere and things have considerably changed in Pakistan. That country can not stand on the legs of democracy for atleast ten more years.

Prof Singh claimed that Panthers party will provide a window for the Hurriyat and other Kashmiri leaders for participating in the coming Assembly elections in the Jammu and Kashmir. These leaders must participate in the polls and work for the welfare of people of the Jammu and Kashmir State. Their wisdom and initiative is needed for the development of the State, he maintained.

The NPP supremo further said that the New Delhi must give assurance to these leaders from Kashmir that elections will be held in a free and fair manner under independent observers. He further demanded that elections be held in J&K under Governor’s rule. It will ensure that there is no political interference from the parties in power during election process.

He also congratulated his Party legislators for their impressive performance in the State Assembly and said that they forced the Government to succumb to the Panthers’ demand of moving a bill on Delimitation in the House.

Commenting on serious allegations raised by a young MLA ( Mr Lone) against a Congress Minister regarding demand and acceptance of Rs 40,000 from him as graft for a genuine work, Prof Bhim Singh said that now the ball is lying in Azad’s court. It has to be seen how the Chief Minister who claims to be deadly against corruption reacts over this issue.

Several institutions celebrate National Youth Day

JAMMU, Jan 12: The birth anniversary of great social reformer Swami Vivekananda was celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour across several institutions today.

The NSS units of Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu (JU) celebrated the occasions with the inmates of Bal Niketan, Ambphalla. They also celebrated the festival of Lohri with the children. Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Sudhanshu Pandey was the chief guest in the programme.

While speaking, Pandey asked the children to follow the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and never feel weak. He said, "Youth are the great power in India and they have to be channelized in the right direction to use it effectively for the betterment of the society".

Dr Jasbir Singh, NSS coordinator, Tilak Raj, president Bal Niketan were also present on the occasion.

The Udhampur unit of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a programe at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Udhampur to celebrate Youth Day. Students, teachers and the members of the civil society attended the programme.

Later, the members of parishad took out a rally which passed through bazars of Udhampur and culminated at Indira Chowk, Udhampur. Dr Renu Sharma, Principal BVM Udhampur and Dr Rakesh, ABVP state president flagged off the rally. Earlier, Dr Rakesh Sharma, while speaking threw light on the life and contributions of Vivekananda.

Luthra College of Education, Talab Tillo also held a function in college to celebrate National Youth Day. On the occasion, an essay writing competition was also organized on the topic " Contributions of Swami Vivekananda Towards Renaissance of the Society".

Principal Prof Vijay Laxmi and Rajiv Luthra, director of the college were also present during the programme.

B N College of Education, Sunjuwan also celebrated the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The occasion of Lohri was also celebrated simultaneously.

A colourful programme was organized by the students to mark the occasion. Principal Prof Phoola Choudhary and Er A G Kohli, chairman of the college also witnessed the programme.

A programme was organized in NITL Hr Sec School, Udhampur to celebrate Youth Day and Lohri festival. Principal Ajay Gupta and Jia Lal Gupta (former Jt Director Education) spoke on the occasion and threw light on the teachings of Vivekananda.

Rama Krishna Mission Jammu organized an impressive function to mark 146th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda as National Youth Day (NYD) at Rama Krishna Vihar Udhowala Jammu today.

Divisional Commissioner Jammu Sudhanshu Pandey, who was the chief guest on the occasion paid floral tributes to Swami Vivekananda. Various school children delivered speech on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and also presented National song.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Pandey stressed upon the youth to follow teachings and principles of Swami Vivekananda and adopt the path of determination, truthfulness and honesty to achieve success in life.

The Minister was addressing function on Kashmir Day at Abhinav Theatre here today organized by Pir Panchal Secretary JKACC Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi presided over the function.

Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi in his address highlighted role of Academy in propagation of State’s rich culture and languages. He asked the organizers to organize such programmes across the state.

Later, Minister awarded meritorious and artists of repute with trophies and certificates.

President of the organization Ramesh Hangloo in his welcome address stressed on propagation of Kashmiri culture among new generations, making of proper policy for enrichment of culture among the displaced Pandits and introduction of Sharda script in camp schools.

He also demanded a Sharda University be set up in J&K and pilgrimage to Sharda Shrine to PoK be restored.

On the occasion, Dr Arjan Dev Majboor a renowned scholar was presented Abhinav Gupt Award 2008. The other awards were presented to Vinod Koul, Relief Commissioner and Neeraj Santoshi, journalist. Deepali Wattal, Rajesh Khar and Manik Wanchoo enthralled the audience with their songs.

The Coventry Scholars Jammu, SOS, Gole Gujral, Presentation Convent, Abhay Public School and Public School Mishriwala bagged the first five prizes respectively.

The programme was compered by Manoj Jad while Vijay Koul, Mukesh Kumar, Adarsh Anand and Kuldeep Koul organised it.

Khajuria asks Partymen to strengthen booth committees

JAMMU, Jan 12: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), state president, Ashok Khajuria has stressed upon his Partymen to strengthen the booth committees in order to bring the Party in a commanding position in the next Assembly elections.

Addressing a workers meeting at Gajansoo, organised by BJP Marah block, today, he said the polling booth committees are the real strength of the Party and maximum efforts are needed to ensure that the services of these committees are utilized in a proper way.

Charging the State and Central Governments of surrendering before the anti-national elements, Mr Khajuria said that the soft approach towards militants and their supporters in and outside the Government has encouraged these elements and demoralized those who have been sacrificing their lives in order to bring peace and normalcy in the State.

He made a strong dig at Finance Minister, Mr Tariq Hamid Qarra for demanding separate currency for the state and said that this Government has lost the moral right to remain in power as its ministers preach sedition.

He said the state has witnessed huge loss of precious lives and property during last 18 years of militancy. But Government is not serious in curbing the terrorism.

He also took the coalition to task for its failure in providing jobs to the unemployed youth, grant of citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan and the refugees of 1965 and 1971, containing sky rocketing prices and curbing militancy.

Bharat Petroleum organizes free check up camp

JAMMU, Jan 12: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. known for its modern petrol pumps and excellence in customer care, today organised a health check up camp at General Bus Stand, Jammu.

In this camp the drivers, cleaners and the Association members of Banihal and Poonch routes were checked up by a team of Government doctors.

The free check up was conducted for diabetes, eyes, general health etc by the qualified doctors in respective fields.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajesh Sharma, Sales Manager of the Corporation said that this free health checkup camp is 7th of its kind in the year on the same spot. The main objective of organizing these check up camps is to enable their customers to the proper medical facilities.

The camp was coordinated by Beacon Shyam Lal &CO, the dealer Bharat Petroleum Corporation.

‘Science Mela’ concludes at Govt PG College

UDHAMPUR, Jan 12: A five-day long "Science Mela" being held at Govt PG College Udhampur in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, concluded today.

During the event, several competitions including Mathematical olympiad, multiple choice written test, inter-college symposium contests on HIV-AIDS and global warming and poster presentation.

Those students who won the prizes in olympiad included Ashish Sharma 1st, Sumit Gupta 2nd and Sumit Sapolia 3rd. Vishal Sharma, Vinay Mahajan and Mohinder Kumar got the consolation prizes.

Winners of multiple choice written test were Rajesh Kumar 1st, Narinder Singh 2nd and Raj Arvinder Singh 3rd. Nishkamini Sharma, Vishal Kant, Tariq Mohd and Indu Priya got the consolation prizes.

In inter-college symposium on HIV-AIDS, those who won prizes were Neha Sharma (PG College Udhampur) 1st, Mohd Bandey (MAM College) 2nd and Heena Gupta (GCW Parade) 3rd. Nitu Dogra (GCW Udhampur) got the consolation prize.

Whereas the winners of symposium on global warming included Neha Sharma (GCW Gandhi Nagar) 1st, Dev Priya (GCW Udhampur) 2nd and Banday Zenaludin (MAM College) and Bhumika Abrol (PG College Udhampur) joint 3rd. Consolation prizes were awarded to Arpana Chandel (GCW Parade) and Nipun Kumar (SPMR College).

Those who won prizes in poster-presentation were Deepali (PG College Udhampur) 1st, Sahil Ohri (MAM College) 2nd and Chetna Sharma (GCW Parade) 3rd. Veenu Sharma (GCW Gandhi Nagar) and Kamal Deep (GCW Udhampur) got the consolation prizes.

On the valedictory function, DDC Udhampur O P Kalandria was the chief guest while District Chief Planning Officer Rajesh Jamwal was the guest of honour.

BJYM celebrates birthday of Swami Vivekanand

On the occasion, the statue of Swami Vivekanand was garlanded by BJYM leaders.

Paying obeisance to Swami Ji, Pranav Gupta recalled the services of this great saint to nation and Hinduism.

Writers’ Forum holds interactive session

JAMMU, Jan 12: Writers’ Forum, Jammu organised an interactive session with the eminent Hindi poet and short story writer, Dr Adarsh at K L Saigal Hall in the Cultural Academy complex here today.

Dr K C Dubey, Director, Radio Station, in his presidential address lauded the forum for arranging the such interaction of Dr Adarsh with leading literary persons in this part of the country.

Dr Adarsh, who hails from Udhampur, has made a mark on the literary horizon. His short story book " Das Darwajey" got Cultural Academy award in 1984 and another book award from Hindi Directorate, New Delhi in 2004.

Chairman, Writers’ Forum, P S Betab, in his speech said the forum is committed to initiate programmes aimed at promotion of literature and culture.

Dr Rafeeq Masoodi, Secretary, Academy of Art, Culture and Languges also attended the programme.

Harvest festival ‘Lohri’ celebrated with fervour

JAMMU, Jan 12: On the eve of harvest festival "Lohri", celebrations were held across the different educational institutions wherein students and staff celebrated the day with great fervour and joy.

In Govt. PG College of Education Jammu, the lohri celebration was held in college premises. On the occasion, Principal lighted the bonfire and extended wishes to students and staff members.

S M Shishu Niketan Hr Sec School, Bohri and its junior wing KIDZEE also celebrated the harvest festival. All the students and staff gathered around the bonfire in the presence of chairman T R Mahajan, MD Parneesh Mahajan and Principal Manikarnika Sharma.

Students and staff of Nav Yug Hr Sc School, Shiv Nagar also celebrated lohri with great fervour and joy.

On the occasion, a cultural programme was also organized in the school wherein students presented skits, folk songs and dances. Bonfire was also lighted followed by prayer to fire God. Principal Chander Kanta and director Hardev Jamwal were also present.

Sainik Public School, Sainik Colony celebrated Lohri in traditional style. On the occasion, students presented cultural programmes to mark the festival. Later, the Principal described the importance of the day to the students.

Prasaar Society, a NGO celebrated the festival of Lohri with the students of Viraj Bal Niketan School at Khanpurin Nagrota.

The students presented colorful programme to mark the celebrations. The traditional lohri sweets were also distributed among the students.

The children of Below Povery Line people studies in this school, which is managed by Mrs Raj Bharti.

JU determined to speed up education process: VC

JAMMU, Jan 12: "University of Jammu (JU) is determined to speed up the process of education and the private B.Ed colleges affiliated to it are playing an important role in this endeavour", said Vice Chancellor Prof. Amitabh Mattoo at the inaugural function of Thakur Anant Singh College of Education, Sainik Colony here this afternoon.

Prof. Mattoo also said that large number of private colleges have come up in the State, which has facilitated education at door steps to the students. Earlier, he inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp.

Also speaking, Dr Meenakshi Kilam, Director Colleges Development Council emphasized on the need for imparting quality education in colleges and expressed hope that the college would not compromise on this factor. MLA Raman Mattoo was also present on the occasion.

On the occasion, students of the college presented variety of cultural programme including dances in Dogri, Punjabi, Kashmiri and Rajasthani. The annual report of the college was read by Principal Diwakar Singh Jamwal. Sham Singh, chairman and Onkar Seth vice-chairman were also present on the occasion.

The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Nirmal Seth, secretary.

Green Brigade demands degree college at Katra

KATRA, Jan 12: A meeting of people having affiliation with different political parties was held here under the chairmanship of former MLA and Parliamentary Secretary Bansi Lal Kohistani, at Katra, in which an action committee was formed to channelize the demand of Degree College at Katra.

The participants held that despite there being a University at Katra, it was far away from the imagination of the people that there was no degree college in the vicinity of Katra, despite the fact that a large number of Plus two pass outs have to move outside for obtaining college education.

The meeting held under the aegis of Green Brigade (An Army of civilians) was attended among others by all the people of different shades and hues to give the college movement a shot in the arm, as was initiated by the Green Brigade.

The participants in the meeting thanked the authorities for shifting Middle School to Higher Secondary School provided rooms and abandoning the proposed move to convert gracious hall into small pigeon hole rooms.

The meeting among others was attended by Rakesh Wazir, president Green Brigade, Shiv Kumar Sharma, former president Hotel and Restaurant Association Katra, Sardari Lal Dubey, Ajay Singh Kotwal, Kuldeep Kesar, R S Manhas, H Dubey, Ramneek Sharma, Gopal Singh, Suresh Dubey, Madan Gopal and other prominent citizens of Katra.

Kisan Sabha celebrates 28th foundation day

BILLAWAR, Jan 12: Kisan Sabha organized one day convention at Dewal village in Billawar tehsil to celebrate its 28th foundation day.

Advocate Hari Chand Jalmeria, State president of Sabha presided over while B D Thakur, retired sessions judge was the chief guest.

While addressing Jalmeria highlighted various struggles made by Kisan Sabha on the issues of farmers including two-month long agitation in the year 1990-1991 and Billawar to Jammu Padyatra for compensation to victims of hail-storm as also for getting degree college at Billawar.

Jalmeria besides castigating the State Government highlighted various demands of Kisan Sabha which included Creation of Billawar district; holding delimitation of existing assembly seats by giving 12 more seats to Jammu province; opening of Agriculture and Horticulture research centres; Introduction of crop insurance scheme for farmers; employment to rural youth; construction of infrastructure for degree colleges including provision of science subject and posting of staff at GDC Billawar, posting of requisite staff in all the schools located in far flung areas and giving Tehsil status to Ramkot and Machhedi.

The other demands voiced in the convention pertained to creation of departmental divisions of Electricity, PHE, PWD etc in Billawar, as also road connectivity to all the villages. In the convention Chuni Lal Mistri was elected as president of Sabha for Billawar tehsil, Sher Singh as general secretary, Raghubir Singh and Karan Singh as vice presidents, Advocate Rakesh Singh as secretary and Tarlochan Singh as joint secretary.

Army hands over 2 sources in rape bid case

RAJOURI, Jan 12: The Army authorities handed over two local youth working as sources with 20 RR last night in connection with the molestation and rape attempt case at village Saranu in Rajouri district.

They have been identified as Mir Qasim, son of Bahadur Ali, resident of Saranu and Mohd Tufail, son of Mohd Shafi, resident of Piu Manyal village. No Army soldier was handed over to Police in connection with the case registered at Rajouri police station vide FIR No. 20/ 2008 against the jawans of 20 RR who barged into the house of Satpal and Balbir Kumar on Thursday.

The gun seized by village Defence Committee members has been seized by police. Strong resentment was brewing among the civilians in the area over the act of ‘shame’ on the part of Armymen deployed for the protection and security of civilian population. They are demanding arrest of jawans while senior police officials at Rajouri alleged that officers of 20 RR were shielding their jawans and not cooperating with the police investigations. The top Army officers of 16 Corps were tight lipped over the matter. The situation is turning explosive day by day with the attitude of Army authorities in border district of Rajouri.
