Sehwag, Kaarthick hit form as practice match ends in draw

CANBERRA, Jan 12: Virender Sehwag slammed a 78-ball 113 against Australia Capital Territory XI to stake his claim for a berth in the Indian team for the Perth Test against Australia but Yuvraj Singh continued to struggle with the bat.

Sehwag smashed a rousing century and Dinesh Kaarthick (97) came near one as India’s three-day practice match against the ACT XI ended in a draw at the Manuka Oval.

In contrast, Yuvraj came a cropper again, managing just three in the second innings.

After India declared at the tea time score of 281 for four, the hosts, chasing an improbable target of 314 runs from 33 overs, were greeted by some early blows before they slumped to 60 for three at stumps.

The final 15 mandatory overs were not bowled as the Indians, presumably, wanted to be in time for the evening function at the Indian High Commissioner’s residence.

India had declared their first innings at 325 for 9, in reply to which the hosts had made 292 for eight before declaring their essay.

In contrast to the strong impression which Sehwag and Kaarthik created, the two batsmen under the pump, Wasim Jaffer (21) and Yuvraj again disappointed in their second outing.

Jaffer fell to the leg-spinner Ryan Bulger while Yuvraj drove a low full toss from medium-pacer Adam Perera into the hands of short extra cover.

Sehwag had reprieves at 16 and 92 but it was a vintage stuff from the Delhi dasher who peppered the offside region with brutal strokes in a knock of 113 off just 78 deliveries with 18 fours and two sixes in it.

Sehwag chose to leave all niceties behind in the dressing room and came out with a brutalising intent. He began by smashing three fours off left-arm paceman Perera.

He was lucky on 16 when he was let off at square leg but thereafter proved a scourge to the home bowling.

Sehwag was particularly harsh on Perera whose line outside the off-stump was to the batsman’s liking. He wasn’t soft on right-hander’s either, squeezing out 10 runs in Adam Ritchard’s first over.

Leg-spinner Ryan Bulger wilted under the assault after he was hit for 10 runs in his first over.

Sehwag completed his half century from 38 balls, lofting Bulger for a six over extra cover but was lucky on 92 when a mid-on fielder let him off.

Sehwag’s three-figure knock was finally raised when he flicked Ritchard for four, celebrating the moment with one through point and a massive six.

Kaarthick opened out after Sehwag had left the stage and in contrast to the latter, played several cultured stroke through the off-side. However, he was dismissed just three short of his century when tried to flick spinner Mark Higg on the onside and missed the line of the delivery.

Madugalle invites Kumble,Ponting

CANBERRA, Jan 12: ICC chief match referee Ranjan Madugalle has requested rival captains Anil Kumble and Ricky Ponting to be present for a "cool-off" session at Perth on Monday, two days before the third Test begins there.

It is learnt that Kumble and his Australian counterpart Ponting have been asked if they could meet in Perth in order to build bridges over the fractured relationship between the two sides.

Kumble had set a conciliatory tone when he had declared on arrival here that he would have no problem in meeting with Ponting at the initiative of Madugalle.

Ponting too has softened his approach by declaring in a local newspaper that he would ask his team-mates to assemble in Perth and review a "few things they had done during the Sydney Test."

Ponting had also mentioned that he was not happy with his own conduct when he stayed put at the crease in the first innings after being given out.

Madugalle has been sent by the ICC with the purpose of getting the two warring captains together and help match referee Mike Procter in the discharge of his duties.

By all accounts, the next three days in Perth in lead up to the Test are going to be pretty hectic.

Not only Madugalle would get the two captains together, the hearing of charge levelled against Australian spinner Brad Hogg by the Indian team is also scheduled in front of Procter.

Ponting has called for a meeting of his teammates and Kumble too has announced he would let know fellow India players about the line they should not overstep during the Perth Test.

The newspapers here though are convinced that the relationships between the two sides can no longer be smooth. (PTI)

Lalu wants Team India to return home

NEW DELHI, Jan 12: The racism slur on Harbhajan Singh is not just a blot on the cricketer but the entire country and Indian cricketers should have been recalled from their tumultuous tour of Australia, said Railways minister Lalu Prasad.

Talking to reporters at the Rail Bhawan today, the minister cited the example of Rana Pratap and said there could not be any compromise on self-respect.

"I would have recalled the players as this is a question of country’s self-respect," he said.

Though Harbhajan is now free to play pending his appeal against the three-match ban, the minister felt the entire process came as a humiliation for both the spinner and the country.

"The matter has not been settled yet. Harbhajan was insulted. It was also an insult to the country," said the minister, who also heads the state cricket association in Bihar.

The BCCI initially contemplated a pullout before ICC yielded to their objection against controversial umpire Steve Bucknor who has been removed from officiating in the Perth Test.

BCCI later convened an emergency working committee meeting after which they announced the tour was on "for the present" and they would continuously review the series. (PTI)

Burnout behind umpiring errors,
need bigger ICC panel: Ponting

MELBOURNE, Jan 12: Apparently conceding that umpiring blunders marred the Sydney Test, Australian captain Ricky Ponting has called for stretching ICC’s 10-member elite panel, saying some officials are making errors due to exhaustion.

"I’ve been talking to the ICC for some time about getting more umpires on the elite panel. We talk a lot as players about how much we’re playing. But the same applies to umpires," Ponting said.

"The umpires could be in Pakistan last week doing a Test match and they’ll be in Perth next week doing us, with only a couple of days in between," he was quoted as saying by ‘Herald Sun’. (PTI)

Revealing that English umpire Mark Benson, who stood in Sydney, had told him he had been on the road for four months, Ponting said, "I’m sure after four months he (Benson) thought he was as good as gold, but he wouldn’t know how tired he was until he gets a break."

"Players notice even when they are five per cent off. It can be the difference between playing and nicking a shot, or hitting it cleanly. I’m sure it is the same for these guys."

The ICC is due to review its panel of elite umpires in April.

Benson and his colleague Steve Bucknor were heavily criticised for a series of errors in the second Test, following which the West Indian was replaced by Billy Bowden for the Perth Test.

Up to 10 controversial decisions, along with the racism row involving Harbhajan Singh, turned the game into a simmering contest that Australia won with 10 minutes to spare.

Meanwhile, according to the report, certain quarters in Cricket Australia are in favour of introducing a third on-field umpire to lessen the burden on them.

If approved by the ICC, each umpire would officiate for four hours, instead of six, every day of a Test match.

"It’s a bloody good idea because it immediately takes a lot of the pressure off these blokes," a CA source was quoted as saying.

"Benson and Bucknor must have spent 33 hours out there in Sydney. That’s a long time to be standing in the field, concentrating on every delivery," the source said. (PTI)

Chasing 234 to win, ICC suffered a terrible batting collapse to perish for paltry 49 runs.

Khalsa Club set up summit clash with AKSC

Excelsior Sports Correspondent

JAMMU, Jan 12: Khalsa Club got the better of Zorawar Club with a convincing 3-1 win in the second semifinal to set up title clash with Akali Kour Singh Club (AKSC) in the ongoing State Heroes Hockey Championship being played at K K Hakku Stadium here today.

Khalsa Club got into the act straightway with Rajinder Singh scored the first goal in the 7th minute.

Zorawar Club tried desperately to level the lead but Khalsa Club had done their homework pretty well who never allowed their opponents to settle down and finished half time with a 1-0 lead.

Just when it looked that the match might ended in Khalsa Club’s favour, Zorawar Club pulled one back through Jaspreet Singh in the 55th minute who scored the equaliser much to the joy of his team to make the contest at razor edge.

But in the end, it was Khalsa Club who despite conceding a goal kept their cool and added two more goals to seal the issue.

Sehwag hopeful of making come back in Perth Test

CANBERRA, Jan 12: After hitting an explosive hundred against the ACT XI, Virender Sehwag was hoping a recall to the Indian Test team.

"I can think of (playing in) Perth now. I have played there before. That is a good pitch with good bounce. Batsmen can go for shots there," Sehwag said.

The flamboyant opener said concentration was the key to his performance today.

"The idea was to focus on the session. I knew if my mind get focus, I will get back my shots. I thought of nothing but the concentration.

"Earlier I was thinking that something is wrong with my foot-work, worked on it, but nothing happened, so I just wanted to concentrate," Sehwag said after a sparkling innings of 113 runs, which he dedicated to his late father.

Sehwag, who last played a Test in January 2007 against South Africa, said warming the benches never pleased him.

"Yes I was disappointing sitting out. Both Yuvraj and (Wasim) Jaffer were playing well and it was really challenging sitting out.

"But I am happy that there is competition in the team and now I am waiting for my chance," he said.

Sehwag also shared what went through his mind when he was not among runs.

"When you fail to score, you try to restrict shots. I also tried to curb my shots on the front foot. But it just adds to chaos in mind as it makes you double minded and eventually you get out.

"I always had self-belief that I can do well in Australia. The last tour was good for me. (Anil) Kumble had also backed me. I thank him and the selectors for posing faith in me and picking me for the tour," he said.

Sehwag, who was not part of the team in the Sydney Test, said thought of defeat never crossed the Indians’ mind.

"We never thought we will lose the match even when wickets fell in quick succession. We knew Kumble and Harbhajan can bat down the order.

"We were sure that RP (Singh) and Ishant (Sharma) can also bat a few overs if needed, but it just did not happen. The team was angry that we could have at least drawn the Test but lost it due to some bad decisions against us," he said.

"It is bad for cricket that Sydney Test will be remembered for all controversies despite some good performances like that of Hayden, Kumble and Harbhajan were there," he said.(PTI)

Hogg’s code of conduct hearing tomorrow

DUBAI, Jan 12: Almost a week after Harbhajan Singh’s controversial ban, it will be the turn of Australian spinner Brad Hogg to appear before the match referee for a disciplinary hearing at Perth on Monday.

Hogg is accused of abusing India captain Anil Kumble and vice-captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni during the team’s second innings in the acrimonious Sydney Test.

The charges against Hogg have been brought by Indian team manager Chetan Chauhan under level 3 of the ICC code of conduct.

Mike Procter of the elite panel of ICC match referees will conduct the hearing, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement today.

The alleged offence has been reported under paragraph 3.3 of the ICC code of conduct which refers to players or team officials "using language or gestures that offends, insults, humiliates, intimidates, threatens, disparages or vilifies another person on the basis of that person’s race, religion, gender, colour, descent, or national or ethic origin".

Procter had earlier declared Harbhajan guilty of racially abusing Andrew Symonds and slapped a three-match ban on the off-spinner, which was later challenged by the player and the BCCI.

ICC has appointed New Zealand high court judge John Hansen to hear the appeal. (PTI)
