Equipoise of
mind
Sir,
It is not know for
sure whether the accurate translation of mind in
Sanskrit is Mana or not. Mana is a bit
different from mind. Ask any orientalist and he
would swear in sheer emphasis that it is so. The
reason that he will give is plausible. For any
word, leave alone language can not be translated
into any other with meaning and spirit intact. It
is not possible. Every language has a different
flavour and comes from a different socio cultural
milieu. However the expressions and broad
outlines can be translated keeping in view the
fact that human feelings and aspirations are more
or less same everywhere. If there is a difference
it is only in qualitative expression.
Be it as it were,
when we talk of mind we have many things in view.
Mind is restless. Mind is mercurial. Mind is
subtle. Here we will not touch the Freudian
concepts, or Carl Jung's theories. Terms like
conscious state, unconscious state or
subconscious state. These sound highly complex
and will be of little use to down to earth person
or in lay terms to a common man. It is a fact
that the currents that rise on the ocean of mind
make us restless. We waver between good and evil
or we oscillate between inaction and action. Lord
Krishna while discussing inaction and action with
Arjuna makes it clear to him that inaction
(Akarmanita) will lead one nowhere. Because a
person cannot escape from the reality of Action
(Karma). It is the State of Karma which makes one
realise about evil and good. The constant
confusion about these leads to a state of mental
agitation. It is here, at this very stage, that
one needs to train mind towards good things and
above all towards a mental equipoise. That person
is verily a balanced one (Sithit Pragya) declears
Lord Krishna.
Our life is full
of woes, sorrows and also happiness. Nothing is
permanent. This fleeting nature of human life has
to be enjoyed through mental discipline. Through
the state of mental equipoise. It is very
difficult to attain to such a state. But it is
never impossible. The key is to involve yourself
in the action you do yet remaining detached.
Think that this world is a huge stage where every
person has a role. He performs his role and
departs. Enjoy this huge play of life. It will
help us to get equipoise of mind, so essential
for a happy life.

Baby show
Sir,
A photograph of a
child was published in this paper (Jan 7) who was
a participant in a baby show held in Kolkata.
Though the show was not held in our state it was
pleasing to look at the child who was wearing a
red dress and a fur cap that too was red. The
baby perhaps a girl was yawning.
To the beholder
the baby struck a chord deep into his very being.
The unconcerned yawn and a satisfying visage of
the baby was most beautiful. The innocence of the
baby who perhaps was watching the proceedings
unconcerned reflected the life of a child. True,
unblemished and honest. A child is not concerned
with religion overwhich we fight. He has nothing
to do with our politics and social philosophy. He
is just concerned with only being a child all
along. But it is an irony that the same child
will some day step into our shoes and willingly
or unwillingly do the same as we adults indulge
in. What a tragedy for the human beings! On one
side we fail to remain as pure as a child and on
the otherside we help the same child to step into
our shoes which eventually proves to be
uncomfortable. Cannot we translate the innocence
and detachment of the baby in the photograph in
our life.

Control pollution
Sir,
With the rise of
industralisation the other important aspect that
has been overlooked by the Governments not only
here but all over the world is the fall out of
too many industries. That fall out is the
pollution.
Pollution is now
assuming menacing proportions. Even though our
State is low on industries. Still there are
pockets of industrial areas which from the point
of view of our State are significant. Equally
significant is the concern shown by the people
who live near these industrial areas and who have
raised their voice now and then against the rise
of pollution levels in the proximity of these
areas.
We have seen that
on 2nd of January a massive demonstration was
held by the people of Kathua and its adjoining
areas to protest against the rise of pollution in
and around the areas where Industries are located
especially in this particular case in Kathua.
Some months ago the people of Samba had similarly
raised their voices against the chemical
pollution reported to be on the rise in Samba. We
have to ensure that industries where ever they be
have to stick to the standards of the pollution
control so that people are not affected as a
result of the population. In Kashmir valley areas
surrounding Khrew cement plants have been
literally soaked in dust spewed out by the huge
cement plant located there. Industries are meant
for the development of man. But if the same man
is put to danger then we loose the logic behind
industrialisation. It is hoped that the Govt.
will accord due respect to the feelings of the
people are strictly ensure that pollution is
controlled so that we industralise but with a
humane and healthy vision.
Yours etc...
