Declining values
Sir,
A group of
revellers openly molest two young women in the
Juju area of Mumbai on 31st December night. Then
thank God, they are saved by two brave and
conscientious HT photo Journalists who also call
the police.
It is easy to
imagine what would have happened had they not
inervened. They Night even have been drubbed and
humiliated beyond recovery. This incident speaks
about the decline in the moral values of our
nation. India which was respected all over for
its high degree of civilization and morality has
now starting turning violent. Such a barbaric
incident perpretrated against the opposite sex
was not perceived to happen in such a country as
India.
Whatever the case
may be, the incident in serious. We have to do
serious introspection with ourselves. We have to
debate the cause of the sudden downfall in our
value system. We a nation have to show more self
compassion and tolerance. Especially more so when
it comes to matters relating to women. Despite
talking about women empowerment our actions speak
of things which are totally opposite to what we
preach. We cannot escape from the fact that here
in our country brother is killing brother,
fathers and being dispatched by sons, and at the
mere drop of a hat riots occur.
The root cause of
this general decline is that we have turned away
from the traditional life. We have become more
materialistic and full of passion. We think as if
the whole world belongs to us only. As if we have
a right on every thing. Without carrying a fig
for our duties towards the nation we only talk
about our rights.
Let us pause a
while and take stock of the situation. Let us
return to sanity and harmony. We are sons of a
great civilization. Let us live upto the
expectations of mother India.
Yours etc...

Thirteen member team
Sir,
A team of thirteen
members won the cricket match at Sydney against
the touring team India. Australia had usual
eleven members and above all two umpires who
decided as if they were part of the team.
On 6th January
whereas Australia won cricket lost. A gentleman's
game has been put under pressure.
Has the game of
cricket now stayed as the gentleman's game? Many
people doubt it. In the present series with
Australia it has not been the gentleman's game
all along. India's captain Anil Kumble was right
when he said that only one team played in the
spirit of the game. Australians have always been
aggressive on the ground. They have a history of
passing remarks at the opposing batsmen. Ask any
Indian batsman right from the Great Gavaskar to
the stoic Dravid. They will second that without
doubt. Whenever any opposing batsman does play
well the Aussies distract him with foul remarks.
To make things worse the umpires have time and
again played spoilsport. In the present series
atleast half a dozen decisions went against the
Indian batsmen. In the second test things would
have been different had Dravid and Ganguly not
been given out by careless and partial umpires.
In Ganguly's case Benson would have easily
consulted the third umpire. Instead he asked
Ricky Ponting whether the catch was taken or not.
Micheal Clark, the fielder turned out to be
dishonest and falsely said that he had taken the
catch when actually he had grounded it. Bucknor
on the other hand has a declared aminonsty
against Indian players. His decision regarding
Dravid was carless and partisan. To add salt to
our wounds Harbajan Singh has been banned for
three matches for alledged racial remarks for
which there are no conclusive proofs.
BCCI should take a
tough stand against Australians and if necessary
call off the tour. But with politicians heading
it there are already signs of checkening out.
Things would have been different had Dalmia
headed BCCI. We cannot take these insults any
more. Whole country is hurt. Australians need to
be told firmly where they stand. That will be
good for cricket-the gentleman's game.
Yours etc...
