Sports in the state
Sir,
Sports are
emerging as a new field of gainful activity in
the State. As such the State Govt needs to create
letter infrastructure for the sports in the
State.
It is true that
the sports infrastructure has become considerable
in the past years. We have a state of art Astro
turf stadium in the city for hockey. But we need
to devote more funds to develop indoor sports
like Badminton, volleyball, gymnastics, basket
ball, lawn tennis, table tennis, Judo Karate etc
in the state. The sports persons from the State
have earned a name for themselves in the lesser
known sports like Judo, table tennis etc. One of
the sports in which the State has shown
considerable talent is Billiards and Snooker. At
national level the players of Billiards and
snooker have done fairly well. Hence there is a
need to develop these sports in a scientific way.
We need to create better facilities for these
sports. Side by side it is important that we
employ better and known coaches in these sports
so that our raw talent which is available in
abundance is honed and perfected. We are in the
midst of a sports revolution. It is good that a
big tournament like Santosh trophy will be played
in the State. This will give a big boost to the
development of sports in the State. However it is
a mater of concern that in the most popular game
of cricket no body till date has been selected
for the national team. It is a field of worry for
us. We should try to known the causes of these
things for the betterment of the Sports in the
State.

A brave women
Sir,
The assassination
of Benazir Bhutto is one of the most dartardly
acts that have taken place in the subcontinent.
This cruel act brings once again to one's memory
the assassination of Gandhi Jee, Indirajee and
Rajiv Gandhi. These leaders struggled to
strengthen the institutions of democracy and
democratic ideology.
The subcontinental
politics has received a jolt with the killing of
Benazir. She was a main figure in the Pakistani
politics and in many ways she was deemed as a
hope for that country. With the exit of Benazir
there is an air of uncertainty in the country.
Pakistan is on the brink of a civil war. It is a
nation that is pulled apart by the forces which
it tried to form to harass India and give it a
thousand cuts. But now the giant of terror is
looking inwards. It has started devouring the
masters who left no stone unturned to bring it
up.
We in our country
have to be more alert now. The security forces
have to kept more tight vigil. We are not sure
that will happen any time now. In this moment of
crises and uncertainty the people of the country
have to face the menace of terrorism with great
deal of success but if we remain ever vigilant
and united then we shall surely win the war
against terrorism. The challenges for our
security forces are more varied now. With
Pakistan nearly turning unstable, we in India
have to become ever vigilant to counter the
threat.

Preserving eco-system
Sir,
Our State is one
of the very few states in the whole country which
contains a vast and varied ecosystem. First of
all the State Geography is a three tier one. The
plains of Jammu and the adjoining Shivalik hills
constitute the first tier. The second is the
valley of Kashmir and hills of Rajouri and
Poonch. The third is the lofty cold desert of
Ladakh and high areas of Bhaderwah.
The three tier
nature of ecosystem is unique in the whole
country. During pre-independence period the
forests and its teeming wild life was preserved
with a vengeance by the Dogra kings. Maharaja
Hari Singh in particular was very keen to ensure
that forests in the state remain full of wild
life and are not cut down mercilessly as they
are. Perhaps there was an air of ownership in his
zeal to conserve the natural resources of the
country. While as in a democratic set up the
sense of ownership should have been replaced by
sense of duty and responsibility. But that never
did occur. The result is free for all situation.
I vividly remember that in those days wild pigs
and deer would come out of Kamla forests in Tral
area and feed on roots and scrub during the snowy
winter. In those days Govt. agencies were asked
to feed the deer and Hangul. For the beasts of
prey like a leopard or a snow leopard the prey
was available aplenty in the forests. There were
very less incidents of man animal conflict.
Jungle fowl and patridges were also fed with
grain and corn. Forests were preserved in the
best possible way. When Maharaja Hari Singh lived
in exile in Bombay he still inquired of the wild
life and forests. Such was his dedication towards
ecology. But every thing seems to have gone. Now
we are struggling to preserve whatever little we
have even though now the resources are far
greater and employees are also far large in
numbers!
