Education and society
Sir,
Any sociological,
economical, political enrichment and advancement
in a country principally depends upon the quality
of education dissipated among the masses through
schools/collages. Education helps and enables one
to lead a good and healthy life. No society can
be strong and sustaining various odds of nature
until it is educationally rich. It provides to
lead a civilized life. Therefore, the importance
of education in one's life is of great
significance. A good education means good life,
good society and strong nation. It forms our
character, modifies our behaviour and enables us
to pass a meaningful life. But alas, the rural
sector is generally neglected for promotion of
education and as a result, illiteracy, poverty
and backwardness still reigns unabatedly.
Inadequacy of staff and infrastructure in schools
and colleges followed by lack of sense of
nationalism and dedication and extreme
materialism to earn more by doing less leaving to
exceptions aside, has been a major cause of such
disappointing situations. Lack of accountability
is perhaps the fundamental cause for
deterioration of educational standards. The
private institutions often excel the Govt schools
in result percentage. Lackadaisical attitude of
the concerned authorities in streamlining the
system to ensure proper education in rural
sectors in particular needs to be changed.
Perhaps appointment of ReTs has been an
encouraging step in this regard. It is all felt
that a country is never strong on its materials
and resources but character of its citizens is of
great importance to make it strong and powerful.

Enforcing road discipline
Sir,
The city of
temples is pulsating with life and is thronged by
pilgrims. But sadly to State there is a sore side
to the pulsation. Traffic chaos has turned the
city traffic into a nightmare.
The reasons that
the traffic congestion has played heavoc with the
city traffic. Added by traffic violations and
poor road discipline. Everyone here is in a
hurry. Me first. The minibuses care two hoot for
anyone and a law onto themselves. This is leading
to daily accidents and unneccessary loss of
precious lives. As citizens we have to find a
solution to the city's problems.
In this context it
is necessary to see that driving licenses are
issued only after a proper driving test. There
should be a thorough medical check up. Touts have
to be chased away. Too many vehicles in the hands
of novices, is surely dangerous. Secondly, there
should be a thorough analysis required to cover a
given area of responsibility. Accordingly the
manpower for the traffic police should be
replenished of late, the traffic authorities have
taken some steps in this regard. Even some
innovative road user steps have also been taken
but more are needed. Thirdly, we have to identify
critical areas and choke points which warrant
nakas. These must be manned. Being present alone
is not enough. A traffic cop has to act and act
in an effective way. Drivers treat traffic cops
lightly and escape after violation under their
very nose. There is a need to have roving police
patrols. These patrols should be linked with high
frequency communication. This would facilitate to
nab two most common kinds of traffic violation
over speeding and wrong overtaking. We need to
have dedicated lanes for heavy vehicles and light
vehicles otherwise our roads represent a jumble
of confusion on which cows and dogs jostle for
space with bikes, cars and trucks.
Thus, most
importantly traffic discipline can only be
enforced by a dedicated traffic police. Above all
the prime responsibility rests with the public
who own and drive vehicles. They have to respect
traffic rules and road ethics. Owning a vehicle
is one thing but driving it safely and according
to rules is the most important responsibility.
