(PTI) WB govt to conduct survey on status of tea garden leases KOLKATA, Feb 16: The West Bengal Government would carry out a survey of lease status of the tea gardens for helping Tea Board in speedy disbursal of loans under Special Purpose Tea Fund (SPTF). Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh told reporters here today that it was discovered that tea companies applying for funds under SPTF for re plantation were having defunct leases held by them. The tea gardens whose leases were not active did not qualify for assistance under SPTF, he said after a meeting with the industry, land and land revenue departments of the State Government. Out of the odd 280 tea gardens in West Bengal, 100 had applied for assistance under SPTF. The minister said that Expression of Interest (EoI) would shortly be floated for taking over the tea gardens. Tea Board would also consider implementation of Section 16 (E) for more gardens, as well as suggest the State Government in termination of leases, he added. The Tea Board had decided to implement Section 16 (E) of Tea Board Act for taking over ownership of two gardens, Bamandanga and Chinchula. A total of 13 tea gardens were lying closed in the state. The land and land revenue department would also carry out survey of small tea growers in the state. Ramesh urged the state to allow five per cent of land for non-tea activity like horticulture and tourism. (PTI) |
