Ponting concerned over Pakistan tour

SYDNEY, Feb 15: With the Australian tour of Pakistan hanging in balance, skipper Ricky Ponting has expressed his reservation over playing in the country.

"Look, there is no doubt at all in our dressing room that there are some concerns,’’ Ponting told the Australian.

"Anybody who would be touring Pakistan at the moment, whether you are a cricketer or just a day-to-day citizen, I think you would have some concerns. I don’t think we are different to anybody else.’’

cricket Australia (CA) will send a security inspection team to Pakistan before the series, but even that is not certain to happen. CA is hopeful of a contest at a neutral venue if Pakistan is not deemed safe and the topic will be discussed when the country’s chief executives meet in Kuala Lumpur next week.

In 2002 due to security issues the Australian team declined to tour Pakistan and a similar decision is likely, experts feel.

"We are being kept in the loop daily,’’ skipper said. "Cricket Australia is sending an expert group over there in maybe a week’s time, to check things out, so we’ll know more about Pakistan then.’’ (UNI)

Seles retires from tennis

ST PETERSBURG (Florida), Feb 15: Nine-time Grand Slam winner Monica Seles has announced her retirement from competitive tennis.

The announcement ends one of the most glorious careers in the sport as the 34-year-old won 53 singles titles and six doubles tournaments.

"Tennis has been and will always be a huge part of my life. I have for some time considered a return to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that," Seles said yesterday.

She first became No 1 in the world in March 1991 and held the top ranking for 178 weeks over the next two years.

Seles was born in the former Yugoslavia and became a naturalised United States citizen in 1994.

Tragedy struck seles in April 1993, when she was stabbed in the back during a match in Hamburg, Germany. She was not able to play again for more than two years.

When she did return, she posted a dynamic comeback win at the Canadian Open, then reached the US Open final the following month.

She then won her ninth Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January 1996.

In the spring of 2003, Seles sustained a foot injury that sidelined her from the wta tour.

"Monica Seles is one of the great champions in the history of the sony ericsson wta tour, and an inspiration and role model for millions of fans throughout the world," WTA tour Chief Executive Larry Scott said.

"No one will ever forget the fierce determination and will to win that Monica brought to the court, nor the caring and warm person that she has always been off the court."

In December, Seles said that Lindsay Davenport’s successful return to the tour after pregnancy inspired her to consider her own limited comeback to play Grand Slam tournaments and the major warm-up events for those tournaments.

"I will continue to play exhibitions, participate in charity events, promote the sport, but will no longer plan my schedule around the tour," Seles said.

"I look forward to pursuing other opportunities with the same passion and energy that fueled my dedication to tennis and to devote more time to two of my passions - children and animals.

"I especially want to thank all my wonderful, loyal fans for all of their support for me over the years.

"They have inspired me throughout my career in the good times and comforted me in the bad times.

"I will miss them all as much as I will miss competing in the game of tennis." (AGENCIES)

King to quit after tri-series in Australia

NEW DELHI, Feb 15: Indian cricket team’s trainer Gregory Allen King has decided to quit after the ongoing tri-series in Australia, leaving another support staff position vacant in the last two days following physio John Gloster’s resignation.

BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah today said King, who was contracted with the BCCI till December, 2007, had decided against seeking an extension.

"He has expressed his desire not to continue (as the Indian team’s trainer) after this tour (of Australia), citing personal reasons," Shah said.

King’s decision to quit the post comes a day after physio Gloster announced that he would not continue in the post citing personal reasons. Gloster is due to get married later this year.

The 34-year-old trainer from east London, South Africa, took up the reins from compatriot Adrian Le Roux in August, 2003. He had a non-controversial stint with the Indian team but recently it was suggested that his observations were partly responsible for the omission of Sourav Ganguly in the ODI squad.

King is a post-graduate in Human Kinetics and Ergonomics, was a fitness trainer and sports scientist with the Border Cricket Board in South Africa since 1998. (PTI)

Tendulkar concentrating on height

ADELAIDE, Feb 15: So far Sachin Tendulkar has a modest run in the one-day tri-series and the master batsman is working on tackling balls pitched outside the off-stump before India’s Sunday match against Australia.

Tendulkar has scored 10, 35, 44 and 32 in his four innings and at least on three occasions he has let go an opportunity to construct a major innings in the middle.

As he chose to skip an indoor session for a change and strode out to the outdoor nets, surrounded by mediamen and fans, his advice to his "net" bowler, fielding coach Robin Singh, was as always specific: "bowl on and around the off-stump".

Tendulkar is aware that the Australians would not be bowling him much on his pads. The home bowlers, as everyone else, are aware of his strength on his onside which could become an overwhelming factor in Adelaide where the square boundaries are noticeably shorter.

One Australian bowler who is a master of the off-stump line attack is Stuart Clark. As in the Test series, Tendulkar appeared to have conducted a particular practice session keeping the tall New South Wales fast bowler in mind.

Time and again, Tendulkar would leave the balls marginally pitched outside the off-stump as he tried to perfect his judgement on which deliveries to play and which to leave.

His instruction to robin was to bowl him deliveries which gain height on the off-stump.

"Height, bowl me deliveries which gain height on the off-stump," said Tendulkar.

One-day skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni first waited for his turn to bat at the nets and then became enraptured enough to watch the little genius give a master class.

The footwork, the high left elbow at the point of a stroke, were all displays of technical virtuosity.

As Tendulkar’s session lengthened, young Dinesh Kaarthick ventured to ask how many overs it would have meant in the middle. "Eight or ten," was Tendulkar’s gentle dismissal of the youngster’s nudge to remind him of his overstay in the nets.

History’s longest serving one-day player, the one with most runs under his belt, most centuries, most fifties, Tendulkar has had a modest run in the CB series so far. His four innings read 10, 35, 44 and 32 so far and on at least three occasions, he has let go an opportunity to build a major innings in the middle.

It wouldn’t be long before he leaves the one-day arena but as is his wont, it would only after he reaches a major high.

Speculation on Tendulkar’s one-day retirement has kept resurfacing since the tour of England last summer.

Neither his form nor any signs of dipping interest nor for that matter any fitness issue has warranted such a speculation but the word has kept whirling nevertheless.

Since the twin tour of Ireland and England in the summer of 2007, Tendulkar has turned out in 27 matches, scored 1232 runs, got out six times in the 90s and is yet to add a three-figure score to his 41 centuries.

He hasn’t scored a one-day century for 33 games now, for over a year, a striking aberration in the game’s most prolific scorer ever.

So the interest — and whispers — on the great man continued and it was admitted with high humility by a member of the side, yet to get a game in the series.

Suresh Raina, a highly-promising youngster, is still waiting for his first turn in the middle on this tour and one of the things he has done diligently is to watch Tendulkar from close quarters.

"It’s a lesson to watch him from close quarters. The way he prepares, his shot selection, his technique is all a great lesson for us youngsters," admitted the Uttar Pradesh youngster.

One of Tendulkar’s biggest attribute is his ability to keep doubts at an arm’s length and remain positive at all times — a quality which Raina seems to be imbibing so early in his career.

"I am positive at all times, I am striking the ball well in the nets and when my time comes, I am sure to succeed," said the talented southpaw who at the young age of 21, has already experienced the two extremes of playing for India and now cooling his heels for well over a year.

Raina turned out in 35 games for India before his run of poor scores showed him the door last January. He didn’t score a fifty in his last 17 one-day innings and stated that he is now toughened enough to make the best of opportunity which come his way.

"I was left out of the team because I wasn’t scoring runs. But I never stopped being positive and had a great run in domestic circuit. I am sure my time would come," stated raina, a great attitude to have for a youngster as Indian team these days is populated with youngsters.

One who is not so young yet has an infectious enthusiasm for the game, Tendulkar is doing a great service to youngsters just by his own example in the middle as well as the advice when he has to offer from his wealth of experience.

His departure for the scene might mean one more vacant spot for a youngster in the team but his presence it seems at the moment has a better value for them. (PTI)

Djokovic crashes out in Marseille Open

MARSEILLE (France), Feb 15: Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, who suffered a crippling fever on Davis Cup duty at the weekend, slumped to defeat at the Marseille Open.

The Serbian top seed, and world number three, playing his first match since suffering from flu at the Davis Cup world group clash against Russia in Moscow, fell 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 to unseeded Frenchman Gilles Simon yesterday.

Djokovic missed three days of practice ahead of last week’s tie and was forced to skip his opening singles rubber in Moscow.

Despite opening up a two-set lead over Nikolay Davydenko in Sunday’s reverse singles, the 20-year-old was forced to retire as his legs got heavier and his body more weary.

Second-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet also made an unscheduled early exit losing to Sweden’s world number 52 Robin Soderling 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Gasquet, the world number seven, had been beaten by the Swede in the quarter-finals of the tournament last year.

Soderling will now take on Croatia’s Mario Ancic who put out Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round on Wednesday.

Simon, the world number 30, broke Djokovic in the seventh game of the first set which he took in 25 minutes. The Serb led 4-1 in the second set tie-break before having to save a match point on his way to levelling the tie.

The Serbian star was visibly weakening in the third set and at 4-1 down in the final set he was forced to call the trainer to the court. (AGENCIES)

Akhtar dropped from domestic competition

KARACHI, Feb 15: Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been dropped from a domestic tournament in Pakistan on disciplinary grounds after being accused of having a negative influence on the dressing room.

Shoaib’s fitness was on trial when he led the Federal Areas team against Punjab in the Pentangular Cup match in Lahore this week. After going wicketless in 18 overs on a batting pitch, he criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board for the arrangements.

Shoaib described the tie as a ‘B’ grade match and said the board was doing no service to cricket by providing sub-standard balls and preparing dead pitches.

Already facing disciplinary action for an earlier statement in which he accused the board of having double standards and a dual policy towards players, Shoaib has now been dropped from the Federal Areas team.

A team official told pti that the decision to drop him and hand over captaincy to test pacer Rao Iftikhar was taken after much discussion.

"We felt he had violated the code of conduct with his comments after the match and also he failed to gel with other players and inspire them. His performance was also poor," the official said.

Sources, however, said that PCB Chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf had specifically told the Federal Areas team management to drop Shoaib at once after he lashed out at the board once again.

"The PCB chief exerted pressure on the team management because the entire tournament and the teams are funded by the board," sources said.

Since the board had already issued a notice to Shoaib for breach of conduct and had given him time until February 18 to submit an explanation, they could not have taken more action against him. So they have got it done through the Federal Areas team, sources said.

But Shoaib said he himself had decided to not play in the remaining Pentangular matches as he was busy with a family engagement.

"I might be available for the last match but even that is uncertain now," he said.

A board official said Shoaib had until February 20, because of the general elections on the February 18, to reply to the notice.

Muneer Hafeez, who heads the PCB disciplinary committee, said the fast bowler would be given every chance to tell his side of the story if and when a hearing is held.

"So far, we have not got any instructions from the board to start disciplinary proceedings against anyone," he said.(PTI)

PCB mulls ODI series versus India if Australia pulls out

KARACHI, Feb 15: Apprehending Australia may pull out of the forthcoming tour of Pakistan on security grounds, the cricket board is thinking of arranging a short-term one-day series with India in the free period.

A source said talks had been initiated with some boards whose teams had free time in March-April.

"Yes, there have been some discussions with the Indian board to arrange a three or five match one-day series before they host South Africa at home. But nothing is concrete as yet," the source said.

He said informal talks had also been held with Bangladesh who are free during that period.

Cricket Australia has said that independent security advisors have cautioned them against playing in Pakistan because of the uncertain security situation.

The Australian media has also been playing up the issue by reporting that some players did not want to tour Pakistan because of security fears.

A Pakistan Cricket Board official said efforts were being made to convince the Australians to come to Pakistan and a meeting would be held in Kuala Lumpur this week with CA officials.

"But we are aware that they are finding excuses to back out and we are studying all possible options," he added. (PTI)
