Cross
donation of kidneys brings smiles to two families
BALASORE,
ORISSA, Feb 12: Two women in Orissa - one
Hindu and another Muslim have opted for
cross-donation of kidneys to save the lives of
each others husbands, setting an example of
communal amity.
The kidney
transplant restored joy to two families by saving
the lives of Harekrishna Bhanja (48), a lawyer
from Soro near here, and Mohammed Sayed (50), a
shopkeeper in Cuttack.
Bhanja was
suffering from kidney failure for the past one
year and was on dialysis. He was helpless as
doctors found that none of his close family
members had the same blood group as his.
When it became
difficult for the patient to get a suitable
kidney for his survival, Deepak Sankar Roy, chief
nephrologist of Manjulaben Kidney Hospital here,
an institution affiliated to Rabindranath Tagore
International Institute of Cardiac Science in
Kolkata, came to his rescue.
Roy persuaded the
two couples who were facing the same problem of
kidney transplantation.
Sayeds wife
Saira donated her kidney to Bhanja, whose wife
Kalpana in turn donated her kidney to Sayed, Roy
said over phone from Kolkata.
The surgeries were
performed successfuly in the last week of January
at the hospital and Bhanja was discharged from
the ICU yesterday, Roy said.
While Bhanja would
have to remain in hospital for a few more days,
Sayed has already been discharged, hospital
sources said adding the patients as well as
donors were in good condition.
Roy, who hails
from Bhadrak, said "it was due to the grace
of the almighty that the lives of two persons
could be saved as their problems could be
addressed at the right time."
The blood groups
of both the donors were found to be matching with
the respective recipients, he said it was the
first such case in Orissa involving two
individuals belonging to different religions.

Russia
to build additional nuclear reactors in
Kudankulam
NEW
DELHI, Feb 12: Russia today affirmed its
commitment to build additional nuclear reactors
in Tamil Nadu under an agreement for which
negotiations have been completed.
The strategic
partners also decided to step up all-round
cooperation with particular focus on defence,
hydrocarbons, trade and economic ties during
talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
Russian Prime Minister Victor A Zubkov here.
They set a
bilateral trade target of 10 billion dollars to
be achieved by 2010, for which the
recommendations of a joint task force would be
implemented and Comprehensive Economic
Cooperation Agreement (CECA) considered.
Addressing
journalists after his 90-minute meeting with
Zubkov, Singh said the two sides discussed issues
related to civil nuclear cooperation.
"We have
finalised negotiation in regard to reaching
agreement on building additional nuclear power
plants in India," he said in the presence of
the Russian Prime Minister.
Zubkov affirmed
his countrys commitment to building the
nuclear plants in Kudankulam.
Under the
agreement, Russia is to build four additional
reactors in Kudankulam but it will have to await
a waiver from NSG, for which efforts are
underway.
The agreement was
to be signed during Singhs visit to Moscow
in November last year but it was put off because
of lack of NSG waiver.
The two countries
signed two MoUs-one on development of cooperation
in matters of customs and another in the field of
archives.
Referring to the
defence relations as an "important
pillar" in Indo-Russian relationship, Singh
said the two sides expressed commitment to build
on these ties.
Singh said the two
sides agreed that "vast potential"
existed for cooperation in the field of
hydrocarbons.
He hoped that the
ongoing discussions between oil and gas companies
of the two countries will result in finalisation
of joint projects in India, Russia and third
countries.
Recognising the
potential in the field of trade and economy, the
two leaders agreed on stepping up efforts to tap
it.
"We agreed to
redouble our efforts to tap full potential of our
two countries economies," Singh said,
adding the two sides felt the need for
diversifying the trade basket and expanding
cooperation in the areas of minerals, diamonds,
transport, services, investment and high
technology.
Zubkov said they
set priorities, with particular attention to
trade and economic relations.
"Trade last
year grew by 30 per cent touching by five billion
dollars. If the speed remains the same, I am
confident 10 billion dollar mark will be
achieved," the Russian Prime Minister said.
He added that the
two countries had huge resources and political
will that will help them achieve the target.

Security
stepped up at Raj Thackerays residence
MUMBAI,
Feb 12: Security
was today beefed up at the residence of MNS chief
Raj Thackeray and all entrances barricaded ahead
of his possible arrest after a case was
registered against him for making provocative
statements against north Indians.
Media personnel
trying to reach Thackerays residence were
told to wait several meters away.
A senior police
official said yesterday that Thackeray and SP
leader Abu Asim Azmi will be arrested for making
provocative statements which resulted in
incidents of violence across the city last week.
"The cases
have been registered on the basis of certain
evidence and arrest is mandatory," Joint
Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad
said yesterday.
However, Prasad
had refused to disclose when the arrests would be
made and said the charges under which Thackeray
and Azmi had been booked were non-bailable and
cognisable.
The city police
had registered cases on Sunday night against
Thackeray and Azmi at separate police stations
under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation
with intent to cause riot), 153 A (promoting
enmity between groups on the basis of place of
birth, residence, etc), 153 B (assertions
prejudicial to national integration) and 117
(abetting the commission of an offence by the
public), he said.
Incidents of
violence in the city, specifically targeting
north Indians, began on February 3 after
Thackeray launched a verbal assault against the
community.
The case had been
filed against Thackeray at the Vikhroli police
station on account of a speech made by the MNS
chief in the suburb ahead of SP rally on February
3, Prasad said.
Azmi allegedly
made provocative speeches at the SP rally on
February 3 at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai.
"We have also
sent them notices under section 144 of the CrPC.
Also, they cannot hold any press conferences or
rallies for the next seven days and if they
violate this, we will take action against
them," Prasad said. (PTI)
