Ishant Sharma stars in India’s win

MELBOURNE, Feb 10: India relied on an outstanding display by their pacemen to script a hard-fought five-wicket win over world champions Australia in a low-scoring tri-series cricket one-dayer here today.

The lanky Ishant Sharma (4/38) produced a devastating spell of seam bowling and was well supported by fellow seamers S Sreesanth (3/31) and Irfan Pathan (2/26) to bundle out the mighty Australians for a paltry 159 in 43.1 overs.

The Indians then overcame some anxious moments before overhauling the home team’s target with 25 balls to spare to record their first win the tri-series after their first two games were abandoned because of rain.

Sachin Tendulkar (44), young Rohit Sharma (39 not out), Gautam Gambhir (20) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (17 not out) were the notable contributors for India in the low-scoring match on a difficult track at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

A wide from part-timer Andrew Symonds brought the winning moment for India who also recorded their first ODI win at the MCG after a long gap of 22 years.

The victory has boosted India to the top of the points table with 8 points from three matches while the Australians were just one point behind them on the table from three games. Sri Lanka were in the third position with just two points from two matches.

The Indians will now travel to Canberra to play their next match against Sri Lanka at the Manuka Oval on Tuesday. India suffered the usual stutter in the middle of their innings when three wickets were gone for the addition of 13 runs before skipper Dhoni combined with Rohit Sharma for the sixth wicket to add the final 58 runs of the innings.

Gambhir, Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh (3) were packed to the dressing room as hosts Australia suddenly sensed a killing in a lost game.

Tendulkar had weathered the early storm and the loss of Virender Sehwag (11) and Irfan Pathan (18) wickets but things were still far from secured.

Surely, India’s would have been a lost case if Tendulkar had been ruled out caught behind the wicket off Stuart Clark in the 11th over of the innings with the score reading 52 for one.

Tendulkar, then on 24, had dashed down the track to Clark and had clearly edged a catch behind the stumps but umpire Rudi Koertzen did not see it that way, much to the disappointment of Ricky Pontings men.

It kind of evened out the luck for the visitors as Virender Sehwag had earlier been ruled out leg before wicket to Nathan Bracken with their being doubt on the height of the ball.

Pathan, promoted to number three, departed in a similar fashion but not before he had seen off the new ball.

Tendulkar hit just three fours in his knock of 44 off 54 balls and all three hits were in Brett Lee’s third over, including two thumping hits back past the bowler.

Lee had a hand in Tendulkars dismissal though as he leapt high in the air and plucked a difficult chance after the batsman had essayed an uppish drive off Mitchell Johnson.

Earlier, Ishant Sharma led the way as the Indian pacemen shot out the world champions for a shocking 159 to put themselves on track for recording their first win of the triangular.

No less remarkable was the wicketkeeping of skipper Dhoni who claimed five victims, including one stumping, despite putting one down in the closing stages.

Mike Hussey alone stood his ground in making an unbeaten 61 from 87 balls with three fours and shared a 53-run seventh wicket stand with Brett Lee (10).

Adam Gilchrist (0) departed in the very first over when he was ruled leg before wicket by umpire Rudi Koertzen off Sreesanth even though the batsman had edged the ball on to his pads.

Matthew Hayden (25) took the attack to the Indians with a breathtaking 25 off 20 balls before Sharma found the edge of his bat on way to the wicketkeeper Dhoni.

Ishant is a dangerous bowler, admits Ponting

MELBOURNE, Feb 10: Australian captain Ricky Ponting conceded today that his tormentor Ishant Sharma is a "dangerous bowler" but stopped short of rating the Indian attack as the best he has seen in home conditions in the recent past.

"Ishant has done well in the latter half of this tour so far. He is a dangerous bowler," conceded a sombre Ponting.

"(S) Sreesanth has also looked good but it’s too early to say this is the best attack seen in Australian conditions for sometime now as England was here last year," he said.

The young Indian attack, led by Sharma, booked Australia out for 159 in 43.1 overs after Ponting had chosen to bat first at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today. The Aussie skipper was suitably impressed.

"He is different in the sense that he hits the deck hard and gets some inconsistent bounce. I don’t know whether it’s because he changes his action.

"He looks dangerous and would be even more to the left-handers. Even to the right-handers, the kind of in-swing he manages is a bit unusual," Ponting said.

"I will continue to bowl properly at nets as it’s the practice which makes you a better bowler," Ishant added.

Meanwhile, Ponting rubbished his batsmen for the poor display they put out in the middle.

"We were not good enough and were very poor in batting. We didn’t have enough runs. We tried to stick to our task and had half a chance of winning and that’s the only positive we have from the game.

"Their seamers bowled so well that Harbhajan could bowl his first six overs for six runs or something like that," he said.

Ponting now foresees an interesting tournament ahead, more so that his fast bowlers, particularly Brett Lee, are in need of rotation.

"It’s a pretty interesting tournament now. The next couple of games are going to be pretty important for all the three teams. We now have a tight tussle on our hand.

"Lee bowled probably his quickest spell tonight but he is holding up very well. Perth (where Australia plays next) is the kind of venue where you need your best attack," he added. (PTI)

Abhishek Bachchan wows crowd at Delhi Golf Club

NEW DELHI, Feb 10: If Shahrukh Khan has been bowled over by cricket, Golf seems to be the game for fellow actor Abhishek Bachchan who wowed the crowd at the Delhi Golf Course on the final day of the Indian Masters here today.

The actor, who endorses a watch which is one of the sponsors of the USD 2.5 million European tour event here, arrived at DGC this afternoon with a large entourage in tow.

Attired in a black full-sleeve T-shirt and blue jeans with his shades on, Abhishek hardly got time to go to the course as he was busy posing for the shutterbugs.

He, however, got time to pose with South African great Ernie Els, who is also the brand ambassador of the same watch company Abhishek endorses.

Though the junior Bachchan’s love for the game is not known, the actor was indeed filmed on a golf course in the movie ‘Guru’. (PTI)

We’re confident because of long batting
line-up: Rohit Sharma

MELBOURNE, Feb 10: Despite losing half the side for just over 100, India were always confident of overhauling the mediocre Australian score in the tri-series one-day cricket international, middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma said today.

"We had a long batting line-up and Robin (Uthappa) and Harbhajan (Singh) were still to come. This gave us a lot of confidence when the going was tough," Rohit said after the five-wicket win.

Amritraj leads India to 3-2 win

NEW DELHI, Feb 10: Prakash Amritraj shrugged off a week of controversies to beat Farrukh Dustov in a tense decider and guide India to a 3-2 win over Uzbekistan in the Asia/Oceania zone group I tie here today.

The 23-year-old defeated Farrukh Dustov 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2 in the final reverse singles match to lead India into the second round where they take on Japan at home in April.

Dubbed "unprofessional" by his skipper Leander Paes before the tie for attending a late-night party, the 23-year-old Amritraj went into the match under tremendous pressure after Rohan Bopanna lost to Denis Istomin 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-7 (1) 6-8 in the first reverse singles this morning.

However, Amritraj, playing his first match in the tie, shouldered the burden of expectations with elan and beat Dustov in more than a two-hour long contest to get a standing ovation from his teammates and a sizeable crowd that had turned out to support the team.

Ranked 265 in the ATP charts, 16 places below Dustov, Amritraj was breathing fire from the word go as he raced to a 5-3 lead in the first set after breaking the big-serving Dustov in the eighth game.

After pocketing the first set easily, Amritraj lost his way in the second as Dustov staged a comeback.

Both the players exchanged a break of serve before Dustov went a break up in the eighth game to make it 1-1 and raise hopes of a comeback like Istomin.

However, Amritraj was quick to bounce back in the third set and took a 4-1 lead before eventually closing it out. (PTI)
