Air-India launches direct New York-New Delhi nonstop flight

NEW YORK, Feb 9: National carrier Air-India has become the first airline to offer a direct New York-New Delhi flight, after it launched nonstop services between the two cities.

The aircraft left John F Kennedy International Airport here for the Indian capital around 5 pm last evening and it is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi around 5 pm today. Earlier, the flight had departed from New Delhi at 3 am on Thursday and arrived at JFK Airport at shortly before 6 am yesterday.

The nonstop 14-hour service (AI-101/AI-102), expected to cut travel time between the two cities markedly, is said to redefine air travel. This new service contains better and expanded passenger amenities. The aircraft is equipped with the latest in-flight features, including on-demand audio and video entertainment in each seat.

The 238-seat Boeing 727-200LR aircraft has eight seats in First Class, 35 in Executive Class and 195 seats in Economy Class.

Last year, the air carrier launched a nonstop service between Mumbai and New York on August 1, 2007. Also, the airline offers direct US-India service from Newark (New Jersey), Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles.

''India enjoys one of the fastest growing economies in the world, attracting visitors and major international investment in record numbers. We are increasing nonstop service to meet the rising demand for more convenient travel to India,'' Air-India's Regional Director P S Rajagopal said.

We are also proud to be invited to join the Star Alliance Network, which will allow us to significantly enhance the quality of our service and diversity of destinations we can offer our customers, he added.

Nath to visit Chicago for India-US Trade Policy Forum meet

WASHINGTON, Feb 9: Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath will visit Chicago for a meeting of the India United States Trade Policy Forum, to be organised on February 20-21.

US Trade Representative Susan Schwab will co-chair the event, where parties will deliberate upon key areas of agriculture; innovation and creativity, including the IPR-related issues; investment; services; and tariff and non-tariff barriers.

The meeting will also review the progress made since the last the meeting in April 2007 in New Delhi.

"In keeping with the decision taken by the two ministers at the last meeting to expand economic and commercial cooperation between their SME sectors, the first ever Indo-US SME Summit would be held in Chicago to coincide with the TPF meeting with the objective of enhancing cooperation between Indian and US SMEs, especially in the manufacturing sector," the Indian Embassy has said in a statement.

A 60-plus strong delegation of India companies is expected for the summit, which will be organised by FICCI in cooperation with the Indian Commerce Ministry, Chicago Council on Global Affairs and United States-India Business Council.

"Chicago and mid-western states of US, which together form the manufacturing hub of the US, can play a special role in exploiting the synergies (between the two countries)... The goal of the SME summit is to catalyse and facilitate such cooperation," the statement said.

Schwab and Nath would jointly inaugurate the summit.

Both Nath and Schwab will also be interacting with the Private Sector Advisory Group (PSAG), which they decided to set up at the last TPF meeting. The PSAG had first met in New York in September 2007. (PTI)
