Supreme sacrifice
Sir,
Only a day had
passed when he was awarded Sena Medal on Republic
Day Parade for displaying exemplary bravery in
fighting insurgents in Assam. The day after, in
another battle with the ULFA, he laid down his
life to safeguard and uphold the honour of the
Nation.
Such was Sunil
Kumar Chaudhry. The brave young captain from
Kathua did his best. What else can you demand
from a soldier. He did what was possible. To lay
your life is the supreme sacrifice. His father
who is a serving officer in the army bravely
faced the terrible ordeal. In the true traditions
of Army he presented his most coveted son to the
Nation. We salute this great young captain who
was to be married only a month later.
The land of Jammu
has sacrificed many such young and brave
officers. This land has proved that it is second
to none when it comes to defending the sacred
soil from any aggression whether it is from
inside or outside. There is a debate going on in
the Army circles. Whether army should be called
in for performing anti insurgency operations.
Many generals and previous heads of army are
against the deployment of army for internal
security or for containing insurgencies. The
argument that they put forth is not only
forthright but practical. The overuse of army for
a role for which it is not made at all tells upon
the health and professionalism of the army.
Efforts should be made to improve the training of
Paramilitary forces to tackle insurgencies . Army
should be left to upgrade its fighting skills to
come out a winner in future wars. But so far as
sacrifice is concerned we again salute the brave
son of the soil captain Sunil for his supreme
sacrifice.
Yours etc...

Gojri language and
literature
Sir,
Gorji is a
language that is spoken by more than a million
people of the State. One estimate is that atleast
fifteen lakh people speak Gojri.
Gujjars who speak
Gojri are known for their glorious ancient past.
Even it is said that Lord Krishna belonged to a
Gurjar clan. Gujjars have been highly respected
warrior clan of North and Central India. In tenth
and eleventh centuries they formed huge kingdoms
which ruled a large part of the country.
With such great
traditions Gujjars scattered to different
mountainous area of the country. In tune with the
hills and higher altitude they developed a unique
culture and language which is not entirely
divorced from these great traditions and shining
past. In our State Gujjars occupy a place of
pride in the social fabric of the State. The
language of Gojri is rich and has in it an innate
musical quality that is so representative of all
languages spoken in hilly areas. In this context
a news report was published in this newspaper
(Jan 30) about the release of twelve Gojri
publications.
These publications
have been timely and will definitely help to
popularise Gojri language and literature. The
news report carried the news about the need to
treat the Gujjars as ethno linguistic minority.
It is also good that great works of English,
Persian and Sanskrit will be translated into
Gojri. These translation will open a vast field
of study material to the readers of Gojri. Gojri
is a sweet language which needs all the attention
that a child needs.

Cancer hospital
Sir,
As per the news
report published in this paper (Jan 28) the super
speciality cancer hospital will soon become
operational in Katra, in the month of May this
year.
Being the first
dedicated cancer hospital in the State this
hospital shall cater to a long standing need of
the people of the State. Rated as one of the
feared killer of human beings, cancer is a
dreaded disease which has not been yet curable.
Despite rapid advances made in the field of
cancer, research and treatment in medical terms
called onocology, there is not a complete cure
for advanced stages of cancer. The detection of
this dreaded disease at an early stage makes it
possible for the doctors to treat it but the
early detection is very difficult.
In this context
the development of this dedicated cancer hospital
is one of the big achievements of the Shri Mata
Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. About two hundred and
fifty crore will be spent on this hightech
hospital. The important point is that such a huge
sum has been raised without any Government aid or
any help from other financial institution. This
is remarkable. Here the unseen hand of the
Goddess has come to the aid of the people. It is
hoped that this hospital will not only prove path
breaking in treating cancer but will prove
successful in educating the people of the State
about the various causes and prevention of
cancer.
Jai Mata Di.
Yours etc...
