Addressing a press conference here today, president of the DSS Gulchain Singh Charak alleged that statements of PDP leaders including Mehbooba Mufti and separatists added fuel to the fire and provocated people, causing communal tension in Kishtwar, Rajouri and some other areas of the region. He warned such leaders of serious consequences for provocative acts which may cause threat to Kashmiriyat and people of both communities throughout the country.

While reacting strongly to the statements of Mehbooba Mufti for her claims of two and half districts of Jammu region, Mr Charak asked the PDP leader to improve her knowledge and read geography or join the pre-schooling. The people of Kashmir are now realising that these leaders are real culprits who are playing with the emotions of people merely for their vote bank. They are least bothered about their miseries, bloodshed or killings. He said DSS will not tolerate any such move which divides the people on regional or communal lines. He claimed that a delegation of Sabha will go to Delhi and meet President, PM and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi seeking immediate solution of the problem.

Shiva’s mace reaches Sheshnag

SRINAGAR, Aug 14: After a night halt at Chandanwari, the holy mace of Lord Shiva is on its way to the cave Shrine of Amarnath in the South Kashmir Himalayas in the care of its custodian Mahant Deepindra Giri.

Official sources said today that the Saffron-robed ‘chhari mubarak’ reached Sheshnag, the second halt, around 2 pm, accompanied by over 250 Sadhu and will leave after offering of prayers for Panjtarni, the third halt, tomorrow morning.

It was taken to Chandanwari, the first halting station on the traditional 46-km route in Anantnag, from Pahalgam yesterday.

Special prayers would be offered at Panjtarni and the holy mace would reach the 3,880 metre high Amarnath cave on August 16 during the Hindu festival of Rakshabandhan, marking the end of the two-month annual pilgrimage.

A record number of 5.35 lakh pilgrims have offered prayers at the holy cave this year — the highest in the history of the pilgrimage. Earlier in 2004, over four lakh pilgrims offered prayers at the cave.

A total of 68 persons died, mostly from natural causes, during the pilgrimage this year. They included a BSF jawan and a policeman who were part of forces deployed along the yatra route and a Muslim porter and a shopkeeper.

Heavy rush of pilgrims this year prompted the authorities to start the yatra on June 17, a day ahead of schedule and a record number of three lakh pilgrims visited the cave in the first couple of days. However, the controversy generated by the land row dealt a severe blow to the yatra with the number of pilgrims falling in the last week of July.(PTI)
