Stalemate favours none
Sir,
At this critical
juncture state administration as well as Central
Government is confronted with a ticklish problems
relating to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board land row,
which of course is their own creation. Moral
courage, Nationalistic Bent of Mind,
Administrative Acumen, colossal guts, fair
approach based on justice and sans appeasement of
antinational elements is required for resolution
of such problems.
At present
approach of State Administration and that of
Central Government is grossly lopsided and unduly
influenced by a lethal fear psychosis.
Predominantly the leaders of Kashmir are
separatists with pro Pak Stance. They have a
proven black mailing tendency. They need be dealt
firmly but the authorities that be handle them
with unwarranted softness.
People of Jammu
region are nationalistic and patriotic. They are
not mischief mongers and trouble makers. They
have tolerated injustice and apathy of central
leadership and State Governments for a pretty
long time. Now when their religious faith has
been assailed, they have come on the roads. They
have a genuine grievance but State Administration
did the turn-around out of fear psychosis of
separatists.
Situation demands
that patriotic forces should be strengthened and
antinational elements should be dealt with
firmly. Jammu region shall return to normalcy
immediately and Kashmir region in due course of
time. Stalemate favours none.

Power generation
Sir,
Electricity is
crucial to the development of the country. We
need at least one lakh mega watts of more
electricity to tide over the present power crisis
and meet our energy requirements for the future.
Coal based thermal
power plants contribute about more than half of
power generation. The rest comes from
hydroelectric power stations and other sources
including nuclear power. The recent nuke deal
between India and US will help the country in
long term to tide over the difficulties in Power
sector. But short term we need a programme of
power generation which is effective and less
polluting.
Mini and
microhydel power generation is one such area
where the country in general and the State in
particular can benefit. Even though some mini and
microhydel power projects have been installed in
the State the need is to instal more such power
generating units so that the remote areas which
are jet cut off from the world see what
electricity is. There are hundreds of small
streams in these remote parts of the State which
can be used to generate small quantity of power
enough to feed a village or a couple of villages.
Even a string of such mini hydel projects can be
build on a single mountain strain so that more
power is created from a single stream. Some
headway has been made but we should focus on
these mini hydel projects in a big way so that we
provide affordable and assured power to these
remote villages.

Cash crops
Sir,
Deversification of
agriculture involves not only a new approach but
it also calls for a change in the mindset of
farmers. Mostly farmers in the Stae are caught in
the traditional cropping pattern in which there
is no scope for experimentation with other crops.
The result is that the farmers get bogged down in
producing same crops every year. This does not do
well to the soils also because crops need a
particular set of nutrients and when we insist
upon a same cropping pattern in kharif as well as
in Rabi season that demand on particular
nutrients makes soil poor slowly. Thus it is good
if the farmers are made to understand to
diversify their farming pattern.
It is good that
Jammu in particular has to some extent gone in
for the change in cropping patern. But we have to
make farmers experiment with new crops which
yield good economic benefits for them. Cash crops
are essential in this scenario. In addition to
this the Department of Agriculture should try to
introduce cultivation of herbs and exotic fruit
e.g Kala zeera (caraway seeds) and strawbaries.
In case of the latter some break through has been
achieved. There are exotic vegetables which can
fetch good returns. Vegetables like Broccoli,
Brussele sprouts, Parsley, Parsnip are being used
in large quantities in five star hotels and Jammu
being only a few hours away from Delhi can prove
to be a good source of income to farmers.
Similarly in Udhampur district the cultivation of
olives should be given a boost. This is an
important cash crop which can shape the destiny
of the farmers in the State.
