PK seeks President’s intervention

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Aug 3: Expressing serious concern over the oppressive and suppressive measures taken by State Government to crush the ongoing movement launched by Sangarsh Samiti Jammu for restoration of Land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), Panun Kashmir (PK) has sought the immediate intervention of the President of India.

In a letter to President of India, Dr Agnishekhar, convenor Panun Kashmir said present movement in Jammu has its genesis in the injustice that was meted out to the people of Jammu region and Kashmiri Pandits by revocation of land allotment order to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

This order prima facie lacked credibility and smacked of a conspiracy to appease a certain section of Kashmiri based politicians and separatists, he added.

He said the situation arising out of this unconstitutional move by the newly appointed Governor, N N Vohra was grossly mishandled at the cost of the religious sentiments and interests of the nationalist people of Jammu in particular and crores of Hindus in general. The people’s peaceful resistance and protest as a result of this move was subjected to brutalities unheard of in independent India.

J&K police was used as an instrument to terrorize people. The police entered the homes of innocent people and subjected them to brutalities and indignities as if they were aliens or anti-nationals, he added.

He said such draconian measures and suppression of the will of the people resulted in more and more outpouring of their hurt sentiments. Unprovoked firing on peaceful protesters and curfew clamped frequently for days together unlike Kashmir where mobs were given a free run for seven long days to give vent to their anti India sentiments so much so that even Pakistani flags were uninterruptedly allowed to hoist in Lal Chowk Srinagar amid anti India and communal sloganeering has hurt the sentiments of peace loving people of India, he added.

He said the political parties like PDP, NC and Congress added fuel to fire by adopting Kashmiri centric and communal stance. Moreover the role of Governor, N N Vohra added acid to injury by inviting NC leader Dr Farooq Abdullah and PDP supremo, Mehbooba Mufti for a meeting at Jammu.

Bar expresses concern over deployment
of Army in Jammu

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Aug 3: Bar Association Jammu today expressed concern over the unwarranted decision of the administration in deploying Army in Jammu region to curb the ongoing agitation over Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) land row.

The Bar in a meeting held under the chairmanship of its president B S Slathia said that the decision of administration to deploy Army was aimed at preventing people from holding demonstrations.

"However, the defying of curfew despite deployment of Army is a clear indication that people of Jammu region are committed to take the ongoing agitation to its logical conclusion", the Bar further said, adding "this approach of the administration has further given boost to the ongoing agitation".

The Bar Association didn’t appreciate the decision of administration to provide protection and escort Kashmir centric leaders to the venue of meeting at Raj Bhawan who were held hostage by agitating mob at airport for about three hours, Mr Slathia said.

"The Bar Association also didn’t appreciate the provocative press conference given by Divisional Commissioner Jammu thereby informing that about 500 stranded trucks have been cleared to reach different destinations in Kashmir valley with the help of Army", he further said.

"The inefficient holding of ongoing agitation by the administration speaks of their immaturity and lack of vision and wisdom in public dealing", he said, adding "this approach of the administration has encouraged the people to give vent to their feelings by defying curfew restrictions".

The Bar Association reiterated its appeal to all Government, Semi-Government and Public Sector employees to proceed on mass casual leave on August 4.

"Double standard of 'secular' political parties
unfortunate": Mehbooba

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Aug 3: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today termed the double standards of so called secular political parties as unfortunate that too exhibited at a time when the agitation in Jammu has assumed an anti-Kashmiri character with provocative and mindless overtones of communal forces, bringing the State at the verge of disintegration.

Addressing a zone level workers meeting at Batwara, Ms Mufti observed that if not controlled, the Jammu flare-up will plunge the State into the communal holocaust. "Those secular mainstream political parties, who talk and support one thing in Kashmir, have changed their colours in Jammu, wherein they support and propagate agenda of fascist forces," she said and added that given the speeches of their top ranking leadership, it seems they have joined hands with the communal forces and enemies of peace.

She said the prevailing grim situation can't be allowed to dither anymore as it has the potential of not only impairing the gains of the peace process but striking at the roots of the State's integrity and its composite culture. The PDP president remarked that attacks on weaker sections and minorities smacks a conspiracy to divide the State on communal lines to the convenience of rabid communalists. The economic blockade, forced against the people of valley and attacks on Jammu based employees from the Kashmir region speak volumes on how the atmosphere is being vitiated with the deliberate design of a show down through vandalism and use of muscle power.

Speaking on the occasion, PDP senior leader Tariq Hamid Qarra lashed at National Conference which was mocking at PDP's initiative of opening of Srinagar-Muzzaffarabad road. He said, at this crucial juncture this road has given Kashmiris an edge, where they can bargain from a position of strength. He said that under the able leadership of PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, not all the roads connecting the divided Kashmir would have been opened but the trade across the border via these routes would have been restored.

Unfortunately the National Conference has resorted to its divisive politics by their tacit support to the economic blockade through their Jammu based leaders, he added.

National Highway secured for free movement of trucks: CS

Excelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Aug 3: Chief Secretary, S. S. Kapur, today said that the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway had been secured for movement of trucks on either side and spelt out government’s resolve to ensure smooth movement of fruit, fuel and essentials carrying vehicles. He said the situation had improved since yesterday with fuel and fruit laden trucks moving on both sides of the Jawahar Tunnel.

"We assure and guarantee free movement of trucks on National Highway", Mr. Kapur told at a press conference here and asked fruit growers not to entertain any apprehensions on this account. The Highway had been secured and situation was under control, he added.

Mr. Kapur declared in unequivocal terms the government’s determination to disallow any disruption in the movement of traffic on the Highway. He said the administration had single mindedly taken upon itself the task of securing the National Highway and also sought the help of Army in this regard. He said the steps taken on Friday evening had improved the situation.

Giving details, Mr. Kapur said 178 trucks including those laden with fruit crossed Lakhanpur check post on Friday by 8.30 P.M. He said 148 trucks from Jammu arrived here the same day. These include 79 tankers. On Saturday, he said, 130 fresh fruit laden trucks crossed Lakhanpur by 10 PM. He said given the concern of the government to ensure smooth supply of fuel to the Valley, special permission was sought from the Central Government to keep open oil depots in Jammu today despite being Sunday to load tankers and send the supplies to Kashmir.

The CS said that the stock position of petroleum products in the Valley was satisfactory. He said the petrol stocks were sufficient for 15 days, high speed diesel for 10 days, kerosene for over a month and LPG for 12 days. Similarly, he said rice and wheat stocks were adequate for one and a half month each while sugar stocks would suffice for 10 days. He said the entire quantity of allotted food grains of July had been lifted from FCI to be used in August and there was no cause of panic on supplies situation.

Mr. Kapur said that the stock position of fuel and essentials being adequate, the immediate concern was the transportation of fresh fruit from Srinagar. He said due to the situation in Jammu there had been some problem in the movement of trucks but it had been addressed now as the National Highway had been secured for smooth flow of trucks on both sides. He said the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir today had a meeting with the Fruit Growers Association and briefed them about the steps taken by the government to address their concern. He said the government was given to understand that 70 to 100 trucks would be required daily to transport fresh fruit from the Valley.

He said nodal officers would be placed at the three important fruit markets of Sopore, Shopian and Parimpora to oversee the transportation of fruit. He said the growers should give the requirement of trucks for a week or ten days so that the Government ensured their availability. He said besides arranging trucks locally, empty trucks returning after offloading merchandise in the valley would be marshalled to carry fruit from here.
